오델로와 이야고는 계속 관객들을 바라보며 서로 대화한다.
오델로 여길 봐요. Look here.
이야고 무슨 일이죠? What’s the matter?
오델로 잘 좀 살펴보세요. Therefore look to’t well.
이야고 왜요, 무슨 일이에요? 어디 봅시다. How, how? Let’s see.
오델로 아, 악마에요. O, devil!
이야고 보이시나요? Do you see?
오델로 유의해서 보세요. And take heed on’t.
이야고 당신이 이걸 볼 수는 없을 텐데. It is impossible you should see this.
오델로 악마! Devil!
이야고 눈썰미가 좋으시군요. Here’s a goodly watch indeed!
오델로 오, 악마, 악마에요! O devil, devil!
이야고 그것을 가진 척 하지만 실은 가지지 못한 사람들이 많은데 말이죠. They have it very oft that have it not.
오델로 하, 더 이상 움직이지 않는 건가? Ha! No more moving?
이야고 어때요? How is’t?
오델로 여기 젊고 땀 흘리는 악마가 있는데 늘 반항하는 녀석이죠. For here’s a young and sweating devil here, that commonly rebels.
이야고 몸을 숨겨요. 그 조롱, 비웃음, 명백한 경멸을 잘 살펴보세요. Do but encave yourself, and mark the fleers, the gibes, and notable scorns.
오델로 뿔이 난 사람은 괴물이고 짐승이에요. A hornèd man’s a monster and a beast.
이야고 먹이로 삼는 고기를 조롱하는 초록색 눈빛의 괴물입니다. It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock the meat it feeds on.
오델로 그것은 자신이 사랑하는 대상을 공격해요. It strikes where it doth love.
이야고 악마가 당신을 속여 넘기려는 것이죠. Or else the devil will make a grandsire of you.
오델로 마음이 불안해서 터질 것 같아요. 그것은 독사의 혀를 가졌어요! Swell, bosom, with thy fraught, for ’tis of aspics’ tongues!
이야고 더 더럽죠. That’s fouler.
오델로 그것을 때리면 오히려 내 손이 다칠겁니다. I strike it, and it hurts my hand.
이야고 오, 이것은 지옥의 분풀이, 악마의 흉악한 조롱이에요. O, ’tis the spite of hell, the fiend’s arch-mock.
오델로 만약 예전에 내가 싸워야한다는 걸 알았다면, 싸우라는 신호 없이도 그렇게 했을 텐데. Were it my cue to fight, I should have known it without a prompter.
이야고 악마가 가장 끔찍한 죄악을 인간에게 씌우려고 할 때는 처음에는 하늘의 선한 모습으로 나타나기 마련이죠. (관객에게 속삭이며) 내가 지금 하는 것처럼요. When devils will the blackest sins put on, they do suggest at first with heavenly shows. As I do now.
오델로는 왼쪽 관객 앞으로 나서고 이야고는 오른쪽 관객 앞으로 나선다. 오델로는 왼쪽 관객을 향해, 이야고는 오른쪽 관객을 향해 말한다. (오델로와 이야고는 서로 말을 주고받는 것이 아니라 각자 자신만의 독백이라는 것을 명심하고 스스로 일관성을 유지해야 한다.)
오델로 하. Ha!
이야고 일어나세요. Awake!
오델로 저리 가. Avaunt!
이야고 내 말 들려요? Do you hear?
오델로 이리 와. Come hither.
이야고 긴히 하고 싶은 얘기가 있어요. For I would very fain speak with you.
오델로 어떻게 지내? How do you?
이야고 젠장, 내 말을 듣고 있지도 않군요. ’Sblood, but you will not hear me.
오델로 대답 좀 해 봐. Give me answer to it.
이야고 아마도 어젯밤에 안주무신 모양이죠? You have not been a-bed, then?
오델로 정말 너무하는군. That’s fulsome.
이야고 머리를 다친 건 아니죠? Have you not hurt your head?
오델로 전쟁이 계속되는 도시에서, 여전한 혼란 때문에 사람들의 마음이 두려움으로 가득 차 있는데, 이 밤에, 너는 개인적이고 사소한 싸움으로 질서와 안전을 어지럽히고 있구나. In a town of war, yet wild, the people’s hearts brimful of fear, to manage private and domestic quarrel, in night, and on the court and guard of safety!
이야고 여러분은 악마가 시키면 신을 섬기는 일도 내팽개칠 사람들이군요. You are one of those that will not serve God, if the devil bid you.
오델로 대체 무슨 일이야, 네가 이렇게 네 명예를 훼손하고 밤거리 싸움꾼이 되어 자신의 훌륭한 평판을 망쳐버리다니? What’s the matter, that you unlace your reputation thus and spend your rich opinion for the name of a night-brawler?
이야고 (어딘가 멀리 있는 제작진에게) 이리 와서 좀 도와줘요. Come in, and give some help.
오델로 이제 내가 널 제대로 상대하겠어. I’ll come to thee straight.
이야고 코를 골며 잠자고 있는 시민들을 종으로 깨웁시다. Awake the snorting citizens with the bell,
잠시 침묵의 소란이 일어난다.
오델로 네가 날뛰는 걸 보니 좋구나. I am glad to see you mad.
이야고 집중하세요. 집중하세요. Take note, take note.
오델로 투사의 삶이란 분란 속에서 잠을 깨는 것이지. ’Tis the soldiers’ life to have their balmy slumbers waked with strife.
이야고 내 말을 들어 보세요. List me.
오델로 만약 네가 악마라면 난 너를 죽일 수 없을 거야. If that thou be’st a devil, I cannot kill thee.
이야고 당신의 용서를 겸손히 간청합니다. 당신을 너무 아끼기 때문에 그런 거예요. I humbly do beseech you of your pardon For too much loving you.
오델로 불타는 설교자, 만약 내가 꺼뜨린다 해도 나는 너의 불빛을 다시 살리게 되겠지. If I quench thee, thou flaming minister, I can again thy former light restore.
이야고 (무대를 가리키며) 나도 이게 실재하는 않는다는 걸 인정합니다. 여러분의 의심은 재치와 판단력 없이는 가능하지 않죠. I grant indeed it hath not appeared, and your suspicion is not without wit and judgment.
오델로 에이, 독초 같은 것. 사랑스럽고 아름답고 향긋한 냄새를 풍겨서 사람들을 고통스럽게 만드는 구나. O thou weed, who art so lovely fair and smell’st so sweet that the sense aches at thee.
이야고 당신 자신에게는 기쁨을 주고, 내게는 구경거리가 되죠. Thou dost thyself a pleasure, me a sport.
오델로 나는 너를 본보기로 삼아야 겠다. I’ll make thee an example.
이야고 증인이 되어주세요, 위에서 항상 타오르는 빛이여, 우리를 둘러싼 요소들이여. Witness, you ever-burning lights above, you elements that clip us round about.
오델로 너의 이 손은 자유를 빼앗기고, 금식과 기도, 철저한 징계와 경건한 수행을 견뎌야만 해. This hand of yours requires a sequester from liberty, fasting and prayer, much castigation, exercise devout.
이야고 채무자와 채권자는 신중하게 상황을 살피고 침착함을 유지해야합니다. Must be be-lee’d and calm’ by debitor and creditor.
오델로 너는 솔직해져야 해. Thou shouldst be honest.
이야고 그러나 부족하고 잘난 체 하는 자로 인해서 흔들리지 마시고 여러분의 지혜가 그의 허술하고 불확실한 추측 때문에 문제를 일으키지 않도록 하세요. That your wisdom yet, from one that so imperfectly conceits, would take no notice, nor build yourself a trouble out of his scattering and unsure observance.
오델로 정직하겠다고 맹세해. Swear thou art honest.
이야고 여러분께 먼저 이 말씀을 드려야겠군요. First, I must tell thee this.
오델로 이걸 누가 시작한 거지? Who began’t?
이야고 나는 이 불쾌한 난리가 어떻게 시작됐는지 말할 수 없어요. I cannot speak Any beginning to this peevish odds.
오델로 너를 밖으로 내보내지 않았던가? Nor send you out o’ the way?
이야고 내가 돌아왔을 때—그것은 잠깐이었지만— (오델로를 바라보며) 나는 그들이 서로 치고 받으며 뒤엉켜 있는 것을 발견했습니다. 마치 여러분들이 그들을 떼어놓았을 때처럼 말이죠. When I came back— for this was brief—I found them close together, at blow and thrust; even as again they were when you yourself did part them.
오델로 서로를 잡아먹는 식인종들, 인육을 먹는 부족들, 그리고 어깨 아래 머리가 달린 사람들이 있는 곳으로 말이야. And of the Cannibals that each other eat, the Anthropophagi and men whose heads do grow beneath their shoulders.
이야고 여러분을 여기까지 이끈 사람들이 누구인지 짐작이 가세요? May you suspect who they should be that have thus many led you?
오델로 하지만 살인이 빗나간 모양이지. Then murder’s out of tune,
이야고 만약 내가 그런 것을 꿈에라도 알았다면 날 욕해도 좋아요. If ever I did dream of such a matter, abhor me.
오델로 너 기고만장하구나? Do you triumph?
이야고 나는 비판이나 할 뿐 아무것도 아니거든요. For I am nothing, if not critical.
오델로 내가 진실을 밝혀내겠어. I’ll have some proof.
이야고 내 생각을 털어놓으라구요? Utter my thoughts?
오델로 내 의심에 대해 해명해 봐. When I doubt, prove.
이야고 혹시 내 본심을 들어내 보이면 옷소매에서 내 심장을 끄집어내어 갈가마귀 보고 쪼아 먹으라는 꼴일 텐데요. For when my outward action doth demonstrate the native act and figure of my heart in compliment extern,’tis not long after but I will wear my heart upon my sleeve for daws to peck at.
오델로 아니면 네 목숨이 위험해 질 거야. Or woe upon thy life!
이야고 생각 좀 해볼게요. 끈끈이가 나무에 붙은 것처럼 나의 새로운 착상이 머릿속에서 떨어지지가 않네요. 억지로 잡아떼면 뇌 전체가 딸려 나올 지경이에요. 하지만 나의 뮤즈가 진통을 시작했고, 자, 이제 낳았습니다. I am about it; but indeed my invention comes from my pate as birdlime does from frize; It plucks out brains and all: but my Muse labors, and thus she is deliver’d.
오델로 이제 자백해. And then to confess.
이야고 우리가 이렇게 되고 저렇게 되는 것은 모두 우리 자신의 탓입니다. 우리의 몸은 우리의 정원이며, 우리의 의지는 정원사입니다. 따라서 우리가 쐐기풀을 심든, 상추를 뿌리든, 히솝을 심고 타임을 잡초처럼 뽑아버리든, 한 종류의 허브만 심거나 여러 종류를 다양하게 가꾸든, 게으름 때문에 불모로 만들거나 성실하게 비료를 주든 간에, 이와 같은 힘과 바로 잡을 수 있는 권위는 바로 우리 자신의 의지에 달려있습니다. ’Tis in ourselves that we are thus or thus. our bodies are our gardens, to the which our wills are gardeners: so that if we will plant nettles, or sow lettuce, set hyssop and weed up thyme, supply it with one gender of herbs, or distract it with many, either to have it sterile with idleness, or manured with industry, why, the power and corrigible authority of this lies in our wills.
오델로 참 감탄할만한 달변가군. An admirable musician.
이야고 그런데 잇속과 손실에 눈을 뜬 후로 저는 제 자신을 정말 아낄 줄 아는 놈을 단 한 번도 본적이 없어요. And since I could distinguish betwixt a benefit and an injury, I never found man that knew how to love himself.
오델로 그러나 이건 말도 안 되는 소리야. But that’s a fable.
이야고 세상에는 그저 굽실거리며 손발이 닳도록 충성을 다하는 놈들이 있죠. 그 숙맥들은 당나귀처럼 죽도록 주인을 위해 한평생 일만 하는데도 여물로 목구멍 타작이나 하다가 늙어 빠지면 내쫓기기가 일수거든요. You shall mark many a duteous and knee-crooking knave, that, doting on his own obsequious bondage, wears out his time, much like his master’s ass, for nought but provender, and when he’s old, cashier’d.
오델로 모든 천하고 구차한 역경이 내 명성에 먹칠을 하는구나. And all indign and base adversities make head against my estimation!
이야고 이런, 진정하고 조용히 하세요. Come, hold your peace.
오델로 네가 저지른 죄를 생각해 봐. Think on thy sins.
이야고 아직 일어나지 마세요. Do not rise yet.
오델로 나는 알몸으로라도 너에게 덤벼들겠어. Or, naked as I am, I will assault thee.
이야고 이 일이 여러분의 기분을 상하게 한 것 같군요. I see this hath a little dash’d your spirits.
오델로 네 코를 도려내서 개한테 던져주겠다. O, I see that nose of yours, but not that dog I shall throw it to.
이야고 악의보다는 방책을 위한 조치였어요. 마치 위압적인 사자를 겁주기 위해 그의 죄 없는 개를 먹는 것처럼요. A punishment more in policy than in malice, even so as one would eat his offenseless dog to affright an imperious lion.
오델로 그렇지 않으면 불멸의 영혼에 맹세하건대, 네가 내 타오르는 격분을 받느니 차라리 개로 태어나는 편이 좋았을 거야. Or by the worth of man’s eternal soul, thou hadst been better have been born a dog than answer my waked wrath!
이야고 여러분이 침착하고 현명하지 않았다면, 그리고 내 인격, 정직함, 지혜가 아니었다면, 내 생각을 여러분에게 밝히지 않았을 겁니다. It were not for your quiet nor your good, nor for my manhood, honesty, or wisdom to let you know my thoughts.
오델로 최후의 심판의 날 너를 만나 얼굴빛을 보기만 해도, 하늘에서 내팽개쳐진 내 영혼은 지옥의 마귀들이 덤벼들어 게걸스럽게 뜯어 먹히고 말테지. When we shall meet at compt, this look of thine will hurl my soul from heaven, and fiends will snatch at it.
이야고 여러분이 내 말을 더 큰 문제로 과장하거나 의심 이상으로 확대하지 않았으면 좋겠군요. I am to pray you not to strain my speech to grosser issues nor to larger reach than to suspicion.
오델로 일어나라 무시무시한 복수야, 텅 빈 구덩이에서. 아, 사랑아, 물러나고 왕좌를 저 가혹한 증오심에게 넘겨라! Arise, black vengeance, from thy hollow cell! Yield up, O love, thy crown and hearted throne to tyrannous hate!
