Walking Shadow
오델로와 이야고가 서로 대화한다.
이야고 두 사람 사이에 무슨 원한이라도 있었나요? What malice was between you?
오델로 왜 묻는 거죠? Why dost thou ask?
이야고 이러한 상호관계가 잘 정리되면 가장 중요하고 결정적인 실행을 통해 하나로 통합된 결론을 찾아낼 수 있으니까요. When these mutualities so marshal the way, hard at hand comes the master and main exercise, the incorporate conclusion.
오델로 (잠시 망설이다가) 종종 나를 초대하곤 했어요. Oft invited me.
이야고 사실, 그건 별로 좋지 않군요. Faith, that was not so well.
오델로 맞아요. Nor I.
이야고 거기다 그 사기꾼은 잘생기고 젊으며, 바보와 순진한 사람들이 찾는 자질을 다 갖추고 있죠. Besides, the knave is handsome, young, and hath all those requisites in him that folly and green minds look after.
오델로 그때 나는 내가 겪은 가장 비참한 사고들에 대해, 홍수와 들판에서 죽을 고비를 아슬아슬하게 넘긴 것에 대해, 무도한 적에게 잡혀 노예로 팔린 것에 대해, 그곳에서 구원받은 것, 그리고 내 여정의 행적들에 대해 말했습니다. Wherein I spake of most disastrous chances, of moving accidents by flood and field of air-breadth scapes i’ the imminent deadly breach, of being taken by the insolent foe and sold to slavery, of my redemption thence and portance in my travels’ history.
이야고 우리는 현명해져야 해요. 솔직함은 어리석은 짓이고 하려던 일을 망치기 마련이죠. I should be wise, for honesty’s a fool and loses that it works for.
오델로 아, 세상에 그보다 다정한 존재는 없을 거예요. O, the world hath not a sweeter creature.
이야고 스스로 빠져들었군요. Drown thyself!
오델로 그래요. Yes.
이야고 우리는 조심해야 합니다. Let us be wary.
오델로 제가 잘못한 건 그뿐이에요. 더는 없어요. The very head and front of my offending hath this extent, no more.
이야고 솔직히 당신은 거짓말을 하고 있어요. Filth, thou liest!
오델로 뭔가를 알아차렸나요? Discern’st thou aught in that?
이야고 당신은 진실을 말해야 해요. You must tell’s another tale.
오델로 하지만 그것은 위대한 사람들의 전염병이죠. Yet, ’tis the plague of great ones.
이야고 사람은 속과 겉이 같아야 합니다. 그렇지 않다면 존재하지 않는 편이 나아요. Men should be what they seem; Or those that be not, would they might seem none!
오델로 당신 말은 옳은 것 같기도 하고 옳지 않은 것 같기도 하군요. I think that thou art just and think thou art not.
이야고 아니, 내게 알려줘요. No, let me know.
오델로 그렇다면 당신은 지혜롭게 사랑하기보다는 지나치게 사랑한 사람에 대해 말해야 할 것입니다. Then must you speak of one that loved not wisely but too well.
이야고 그래요, 바로 그게 문제였군요. Ay, there’s the point.
오델로 아무 것도 두둔하지 말고 악의로 폄훼하지도 말아주세요. Nothing extenuate, nor set down aught in malice.
이야고 그것이 폭력의 시작이었어요. It was a violent commencement.
오델로 나도 그렇게 생각해요. I think so too.
이야고 왜 그걸 눈치 채지 못했죠? Didst not mark that?
오델로 그토록 감미로운 것이 그토록 치명적인 적은 없으니까요. So sweet was ne’er so fatal.
이야고 눈이 있는 사람은 장점을 흉내 내고 꾸며낼 수 있지만, 진정한 장점은 결코 스스로 드러나지 않는 법이죠. That has an eye can stamp and counterfeit advantages, though true advantage never present itself.
오델로 결국에는 어찌할 바를 몰라 혼란에 빠지고 말았습니다. But being wrought perplex’d in the extreme.
이야고 사랑하면서도 의심하고, 의심하면서도 열렬히 사랑하는 사람은 정말 그 일분일초가 얼마나 저주스럽겠습니까! But, O, what damnèd minutes tells he o’er who dotes, yet doubts, suspects, yet strongly loves.
오델로 맞아요. Ay.
이야고 사람들이 말하길 별 볼일 없는 사람도 사랑에 빠지면 가지고 태어난 것 보다 더 고귀한 본성을 가지게 된다고 하더군요. As, they say, base men being in love have then a nobility in their natures more than is native to them.
오델로 아닌가요? Not?
이야고 만약 우리 삶이 이성과 감각 사이에서 균형을 갖추지 못했다면 우리 본성의 혈기와 비천함은 우리를 가장 터무니없는 결론으로 이끌었을 겁니다. 그러나 우리는 우리의 격정적인 충동, 육체적 자극, 억제할 수 없는 정욕을 다스려야 합니다. 당신이 사랑이라고 부르는 것도 이러한 욕망의 한 분파나 곁가지에 불과해요. If the balance of our lives had not one scale of reason to poise another of sensuality, the blood and baseness of our natures would conduct us to most preposterous conclusions. But we have reason to cool our raging motions, our carnal stings, our unbitted lusts, whereof I take this that you call love to be a sect or scion.
오델로 만약 그렇다면 - If it be that—
이야고 스스로 물속에 뛰어드는 저주인 거죠. A pox of drowning thyself!
오델로 자연이 아무 의도 없이 이런 그림자 같은 열정을 부추기지는 않을 텐데요. Nature would not invest herself in such shadowing passion without some instruction.
이야고 종종 아무 공로 없이 얻고, 아무 잘못 없이 잃기 마련이죠. Oft got without merit, and lost without deserving.
오델로 난 몰랐어요. 의심도 안했구요. 괴롭지도 않았죠. 그래서 그 다음 날 밤에도 잘 잤고, 편안하고 즐거웠어요. I saw’t not, thought it not, it harm’d not me I slept the next night well, was free and merry.
이야고 그래서 쉽게 속는 바보들이 걸려들기 마련인 겁니다. Thus credulous fools are caught.
오델로 이제 내 모든 애정은 하늘로 날려보냈습니다. 사라졌어요. All my fond love thus do I blow to heaven. ’Tis gone.
이야고 그 마음이 오랫동안 변치 않기를 바랍니다. And long live you to think so.
오델로 제가 가르침을 주시는 군요. Thou teachest me.
이야고 그렇지 않으면 악마가 당신을 바보로 만들 테니까요. Or else the devil will make a grandsire of you.
오델로 더 알고 있는 게 있으면 내게 알려주세요. If more thou dost perceive, let me know more.
이야고 이런, 내가 보고 들은 것을 그대로 말하는 건 나에게 정직함이 아닙니다. Alas, alas! It is not honesty in me to speak what I have seen and known.
오델로 그런가요. Soft.
이야고 (관객들을 가리키며) 당신이 직접 나서는 게 좋겠어요. You were best go in.
오델로 난 그러고 싶지 않은데요, Not I.
이야고 (관객들을 가리키며) 저기 도움을 요청하는 사람이 있잖아요. There comes a fellow crying out for help.
오델로 정말 그렇게 생각해요? Dost thou say so?
이야고 이것이 빈약하게 보이는 다른 증거들을 확실하게 만드는 데 도움이 될 수도 있습니다. And this may help to thicken other proofs That do demonstrate thinly.
오델로 그건 알 수 없죠. ’Tis yet to know.
이야고 아니요. 만약 당신이 찬찬히 지켜보면, 우리는 곧 더 많은 것을 알 수 있을 겁니다. Nay, if you stare, we shall hear more anon.
오델로 감정이 북받쳐서 한심하게도 눈물이 새어나와요. I have a salt and sorry rheum offends me.
이야고 쳇. 어쨌든 내말대로 하세요. Pish! But, be you ruled by me.
오델로 알겠습니다. 정 그렇다면 해보죠. Would! nay, I will.
이야고 그러면 당신은 중대한 전환점을 맞이하게 될 겁니다. And thou shalt see an answerable sequestration.
오델로가 관객 앞으로 다가간다. 오델로는 관객에게, 이야고는 오델로에게 말한다.
오델로 자, 이리 와서 나를 좀 봐. Come, I’ll go in with you.
이야고 이렇게 하면 뭔가 효과가 있을 겁니다. This may do something.
오델로 너의 반짝이는 칼들은 집어넣어. 밤이슬 맞으면 녹슬테니까. Keep up your bright swords, for the dew will rust them.
이야고 실전에 나서 본 적은 한 번도 없어요. That never set a squadron in the field.
오델로 세상의 사정들과 해야 할 일들 속에서 너와 보낼 수 있는 시간은 단 한 시간뿐이야. I have but an hour Of love, of worldly matters and direction, To spend with thee:
이야고 그 정도면 충분하죠. Yet be content.
오델로 그동안 너를 잊고 있었군. I had forgot thee.
이야고 훌륭한 사람도 때때로 잊어버리죠. The best sometimes forget.
오델로 세상은 네 젊음의 진지함과 고요함에 주목하고, 너의 이름은 가장 현명한 비평가들의 입에 오르내리지. The gravity and stillness of your youth the world hath noted, and your name is great in mouths of wisest censure.
이야고 그건 사실이에요. Very well.
오델로 난 너를 거의 알지 못해. I scarce did know you.
이야고 여기 있지만 아직도 혼란스러워요. 속임수의 진짜 얼굴은 까발려질 때까지는 결코 드러나지 않으니까요. ’Tis here, but yet confused: Knavery’s plain face is never seen till used.
오델로 맹세컨대 고통 받는 게 아무 것도 모르는 것보다는 나아. I swear ‘tis better to be much abused than but to know’t a little.
이야고 사람들에게 그러한 전망을 갖게 하는 것은 지독히도 어려운 일이죠. It were a tedious difficulty, I think, to bring them to that prospect.
오델로 말해 봐. 이걸 누가 시작한 거지? Speak, who began this?
이야고 이것에 대해선 나는 더 할 말이 없어요. More of this matter cannot I report.
오델로 이 무참한 혼란이 어떻게 시작되었는지, 누가 일으켰는지 말해줘. Give me to know how this foul rout began, who set it on.
이야고 이렇게 손가락을 대고 양심의 가르침을 받도록 하세요. Lay thy finger thus, and let thy soul be instructed.
오델로 내 생각에는 너인 것 같아. I think thou dost.
이야고 이봐요, 뭐라구요? What, ho!
오델로 그래, 그래, 그래, 그래서 So, so, so, so:
이야고 말해봐요. 어서요. Come on, come on;
오델로 너는 태어나지 않았어야 옳았어. Would thou hadst ne’er been born!
이야고 정말로 그런 것 같군요. I’ faith, I fear it has.
오델로 하지만 그래도 불쌍해. But yet the pity of it.
이야고 그러니 누구를 탓할 수 있겠어요. Who let us not therefore blame.
오델로 너는 눈물을 흘리며 나아가고 있어. Proceed you in your tears.
이야고 그래요, 너무나 나약해요. Ay, too gentle.
오델로 그래도 너는 최선을 다하고 있지. Well, tho dost best.
이야고 내가 아는 한 그래요. For aught I know.
오델로 이 슬픔은 거룩한 것이야. This sorrow’s heavenly.
이야고 맞아요. 제가 보장하죠. ’Tis but so, I warrant.
오델로 난 네가 계속 고통 받는 걸 바라지 않아. I would not have thee linger in thy pain.
이야고 나도 마찬가지에요. And so do I too.
오델로 나는 네가 살기를 원해. I’ld have thee live.
이야고 그렇다니 다행이군요. I am glad of it.
오델로 너와 나는 영원히 연결되어 있어. I am bound to thee for ever.
이야고 하나는 사용되기 위함이고 다른 하나는 사용하기 위함이죠. The one’s for use, the other useth it.
오델로 내 생명의 강물이 흐르는 것도 마르는 것도 다 그 샘에 달려 있지. The fountain from the which my current runs, or else dries up.
이야고 이것은 창녀의 재앙과 같아서 많은 사람을 속이고 또 한 사람에게 속는 것입니다. As ’tis the strumpet’s plague to beguile many and be beguiled by one.
오델로 내가 너를 사랑하지 않는다면 내 영혼은 파멸할 거야. 너를 사랑하지 않으면 난 다시 혼돈으로 떨어질 테니까. Perdition catch my soul, but I do love thee! and when I love thee not, chaos is come again.
이야고 주인에게 봉사하는 모습을 보여주면서 주인 덕에 승승장구 하다가 배가 두둑해지면 자기 자신을 찬양하는 법이죠. And, throwing but shows of service on their lords, do well thrive by them and when they have lined their coats do themselves homage.
오델로 그렇게 이중의 지옥으로 떨어지지. Therefore be double damn’d.
이야고 하나가 다른 하나만큼 길죠. The one as long as the other.
오델로 그럼에도 불구하고 이 갈라진 재앙은 우리가 태어날 때부터 주어진 우리 자신의 운명이야. Even then this forked plague is fated to us when we do quicken.
