어떤 음악은 오히려 그 상처를 껴안고,
그 속에서 인간의 품격과 위로를 길어 올립니다.
르네상스의 마지막을 장식한 영국 작곡가 존 다울랜드(John Dowland, 1563–1626) 는
그런 음악가였습니다.
그의 선율에는 화려한 궁정의 빛보다,
고독한 인간의 그림자가 더 짙게 깃들어 있습니다.
다울랜드의 대표작 《Lachrimae, or Seven Tears》(라크리메, 혹은 일곱 개의 눈물)은
그의 이름과 운명을 함께 남긴 작품입니다.
‘눈물(Lachrimae)’이라는 주제 위에 일곱 개의 변주곡이 이어집니다.
하나의 눈물이 흘러 또 다른 눈물을 낳듯,
곡들은 서로 다른 슬픔의 얼굴을 보여줍니다 —
그리움, 후회, 용서, 사랑, 그리고 고요한 평화.
이 곡은 류트가 아닌 비올라 다 감바 콘소트(viola consort) 를 위한 편성으로 쓰였으며,
오늘 감상할 버전은 Steve’s Bedroom Band의 연주입니다.
낡은 현악기의 울림 속에서, 다울랜드의 영혼이 여전히 숨 쉬고 있습니다.
