I noted the unique evolutionary role of consciousness and the fact that it has been indispensable in the history of humanity. Moral choice, creativity, and human culture are conceivable only in the light of consciousness. (pp.145)

의식이 진화 과정에서 특별한 역할을 해왔으며 인류 역사에서 핵심적인 역할을 해왔다고 설명한 바 있다. 도덕적 선택, 창의성, 인간의 문화는 의식이라는 조명 아래에서만 출현할 수 있는 것들이다.

What turned out to be wider than the sky was not the brain but life itself, the begetter of bodies, brains, minds, feelings, and consciousness. What is more impressive than the entire universe is life, as matter and process, life as inspirer of thinking and creation.

하늘보다 넓은 것은 뇌가 아니라 생명 자체였다. 생명은 몸, 뇌, 마음, 느낌, 의식을 낳았기 때문이다. 우주 전체보다 더 큰 것은 생명이다. 물질과 과정으로서의 생명, 생각과 창조를 가능하게 하는 생명 말이다.
