1. Could you introduce to us the goal about SDX Foundation?
SDX재단은 2015년에 K밸리재단으로 출범하여 4차 산업혁명 이후 우리 인간의 삶이 어떻게 변화하게 될지 그리고 그러한 변화에 최적화된 주거환경이나 일자리는 무엇일지에 대한 연구를 통해 새로운 해답을 찾으려고 노력해 왔습니다. 그러던 와중에 디지털전환(DX)기반을 바탕으로 개인들의 사랑과 공감능력을 확산하는 가운데 지속가능발전(SD)을 추구하고자 2021년 3월에 재단명을 SDX재단으로 변경하고 새롭게 출발하게 되었습니다.
미래사회는 지금까지의 물리적 또는 지적 능력으로는 인공지능과 같은 기계와의 경쟁에서 이길 수 없습니다. 이미 인공지능이 작곡도 하고 그림도 그립니다. 하지만 인간에게는 대자연과 다른 이들을 이롭게 하려는 사랑이나 공감의 능력이 있습니다. 더 나은 세상을 꿈꾸고 그것을 실현하는 거대한 상상력을 발휘할 수 있는 유일한 생명체가 인간이라고 생각합니다. 안타깝게도 지금까지는 그러한 상상력이 탐욕을 채우는데 주로 사용되며 지구촌을 병들게 했지만 앞으로는 우리가 창조해 낸 수많은 기계들과 함께 모두가 공존하는 더 나은 미래를 만들어나가야 할 것입니다.
이를 위해서는 더 깊고 심오한 지혜가 필요합니다. 지구 한편에서는 굶어 죽어가는 데, 다른 한편에서 넘치는 쓰레기로 고통받고 있는 지금의 지구촌 현실은 인류문명 수준의 저급함을 적나라하게 보여줍니다. 지구라는 유일한 배에 함께 타고 있는 생명공동체임을 이해하지 못하고 서로를 파괴하겠다고 으르렁대는 수준의 지혜로는 미래를 기약할 수 없습니다.
우리의 유일한 터전인 지구는 이런 저급한 수준의 문명으로 심하게 훼손되며 공멸의 길을 재촉하고 있습니다. 마치 성인이 된 이후에도 정신적 성장을 하지 못하고 육체를 혹사시키는 인간의 모습을 닮았습니다. 이제 지구촌도 정신적 성장이 필요한 때입니다. 이제 지구는 관리대상이요 복원대상입니다. 인류문명 수준을 획기적으로 끌어올려 지구라는 생명공동체를 복원하여 지속가능하게 만들어야 합니다. 그리고 지구촌의 모든 생명체를 사랑하며 조화롭게 더 나은 미래를 만들어가는 리더가 되어야 합니다.
아마도 획기적인 개혁이 필요할 것이고 이 과정에 블록체인, 메타버스 등 다양한 디지털전환 기술은 인류의 지혜 수준을 높이는데 매우 중요한 인프라의 역할을 하리라 생각합니다. 사이버 세계에서 지금보다 수 천 수 만 배의 지적교환을 통해 인류의 문명을 획기적으로 끌어올리는 것이 인류가 해야 할 당면과제라고 생각합니다.
저희 SDX재단은 인류의 당면과제 중에서 가장 중요하다고 생각하는 기후위기 대응에 있어 공급자 중심의 탄소감축이 아닌 개인들의 참여를 확대하는 수요자 중심의 탐소감축 활동을 활성화하려고 합니다. 티끌모아 태산을 만든다는 속담처럼 디지털 플랫폼(Green Platform)을 구축하고 이를 통해 개인들의 작은 행동을 독려하여 유의미한 탄소감축을 구현하려고 하는 것입니다. 예를 들어 지구촌을 돌아다니는 15억대의 자동차가 전기자동차로 바뀌는 것을 기다리는 것이 아니라 이들 차량들이 좀 더 적은 탄소배출을 할 수 있도록 하는 것이 더 의미 있는 일이라고 생각하는 것입니다. 수요가 줄면 자연히 공급은 줄어들 수밖에 없습니다.
지속가능발전은 정부나 국제사회의 문제가 아니라 바로 우리 자신 그리고 우리 아이들의 문제임을 인식하는 것이 중요합니다. 이를 위해서는 디지털전환 기반이 반드시 필요하며 이것을 구현하기 위해서 많은 전문가들과 후원자들의 재능기부 및 후원을 통해 이를 만들어가고 있습니다. 우리는 이런 플랫폼 및 사업모델을 향후 전 세계와 공유하고자 합니다. 특히 디지털기반이 취약한 국가들에도 우선적으로 보급하여 보다 많은 사람들이 참여할 수 있도록 할 예정입니다. 기후위기 대응은 지구시민 모두가 참여해야 할 일이기 때문입니다.
2. What is the Carbon Reduction Index? How does it relate to Korea's policies for carbon neutrality?
정부는 주로 탄소배출이 많은 발전소나 공장 등을 통제하여 탄소중립을 달성하려고 합니다. 그렇지만 탄소감축 활동의 중심은 역시 개인들의 인식변화 및 행동변화로부터 출발해야 한다고 생각합니다. 그래서 정부 정책이 미치지 못하는 수요자 중심의 탄소감축 활동을 우리가 추진하려고 하는 것입니다. CRI는 바로 이런 수요자 중심의 탄소감축 활동을 평가하는 지표입니다. 따라서 정부의 탄소중립 정책에 보완재 역할을 한다고 보시면 될 것 같습니다.
디지털 기반의 지속가능발전을 추구하는 SDX재단은 탄소감축위원회(CRC)를 설립하고, ‘개인들의 탄소 감축에 대한 성과를 측정하고 이에 대한 적절한 보상을 통해 지구시민 모두가 기후위기 대응에 함께 참여하여 지속가능한 지구촌 만들기’에 힘을 보태고자 합니다. 이러한 일을 효과적으로 하기 위해서는 개인들의 행동을 정확하게 기록하고 평가하고 보상하는 플랫폼인 Green Platform을 구축해야 합니다.
개인들의 탄소감축은 아주 미미할 수 있습니다. 하지만 이를 모아 유의미한 수준의 탄소감축을 이루는 것은 매우 중요합니다. 이런 노력에 지자체나 기업들의 확실한 지원은 반드시 필요한 일입니다. 따라서 개인들의 활동상황은 물론이고 지자체나 기업들의 지원상황도 점검해야 합니다. 그래서 우리는 탄소감축지수 (CRI)를 통해 구성원들뿐만 아니라 구성원들을 지원하는 대상조직의 정책이나 프로세스, 프로그램 등을 함께 조사하여 대상조직의 자발적인 탄소감축 활동을 평가하여 그들에게 방향을 제시하려고 합니다. 탄소감축 관련한 다양한 지표들이 있겠지만 CRI는 특별히 개인들의 탄소감축 활동에 관한 지표입니다.
앞서 말씀드린 것처럼 수요자들의 자발적 참여가 탄소감축에 가장 중요하다고 생각하기 때문에 그들의 활동량을 평가하는 것이 우선이고, 그리고 그들을 지원하는 지자체나 기업의 노력을 평가하는 지표가 CRI인 것입니다.
CRI 평가로 인한 기대효과를 살펴보면,
첫째, 구성원들의 참여를 확대하여 수요자 중심의 탄소감축 활동을 활성화 합니다. 탄소감축 활동의 핵심은 개인들의 적극적인 참여입니다. 그러기 위해서 이들의 참여와 활동을 독려하는 제도적 장치와 효과적인 행동강령 등을 제시하여 체계적이고 효과적인 탄소감축 활동이 이루어지도록 해야 합니다. 예를 들어 탄소감축 효과가 큰 교통수단이나 에너지 부분에서의 행동강령을 비중 있게 다뤄야 하며, 재활용의 경우도 실질적인 효과가 구현되는 지 전 과정을 검토한 후에 적합한 행동을 제시해야 합니다. 이런 부분들이 CRI 평가를 통해 체계적이고 효과적으로 이루어질 수 있습니다. 또한 그린플랫폼에 기록된 개인들의 활동상황은 그들에게 인센티브를 제공할 수 있는 기초자료가 될수 있으며 이 플랫폼을 통해 혜택이 주어질수록 더 많은 그리너스가 참여할 수 있는 선순환 구조를 만들어 갈 수 있을 것입니다.
둘째, 조직의 예산이나 정책을 보다 효과적으로 집행할 수 있는 가이드라인을 제공합니다. ESG경영을 해야 하는 기업이나 지자체가 그 예산을 효과적으로 사용하려면 수요자 중심의 정책을 펼쳐야 합니다. 아무리 좋은 정책을 펴도 구성원들이 받아들이지 않으면 아무 소용이 없기 때문입니다.
예를 들어 전기차 몇 대를 구매할 예산으로 탄소배출이 심한 관용차에 공회전제한장치를 부착하여 모든 차량이 탄소감축에 참여하도록 하는 것이 더 의미가 있을 수 있지만 이에 대한 평가지표가 없다면 행동으로 옮기기가 쉽지 않습니다. CRI는 이런 실질적인 효과가 있는 정책이나 프로그램이 평가받을 수 있도록 합니다. 또한 개인들이 관심을 많이 가지공 있는 재활용, 재사용, 리폼 등도 전 과정을 검토하여 실질적인 효과를 낼 수 있는지 점검해야 합니다. 열심히 재활용을 실천하는데 또 다른 일부가 그렇지 않다면 과연 그렇게 모인 자원이 우리가 기대하는 만큼 효율적으로 처리될 것인지 개인들도 잘 모르고 지자체도 잘 모를 수 있습니다. 따라서 전과정을 검토하고 확실하게 효과나는 시스템 도입과 행동강령이 마련되어야 하며 그 결과는 공유되어야 합니다.

1. Could you introduce to us the goal of SDX Foundation?
This SDX Foundation was originally launched as K Valley Foundation in 2015, has been trying to find new solutions through research on how our human lives will change after the Fourth Industrial Revolution and what residential environments or jobs will be optimized for those changes.
Meanwhile, the foundation was renamed SDX Foundation in March last year, 2021, to pursue sustainable development (SD) while spreading individual love and empathy based on the digital transformation (DX) platform.
In the near future society, we cannot win the competition with machines such as artificial intelligence with our physical or intellectual abilities so far. AI can already compose and draw. They can be creative either.
However, human beings are greater. We have the ability to love and empathize to benefit Mother Nature and others. I think human beings are the only creatures that can dream of a better world and exert a huge imagination to make it come true.
Unfortunately, so far, those wonderful imaginations have been mainly used to satisfy greed and have made the global community sick, but in the future, we will have to create a better future where everyone co-exists with the numerous machines we have created.
To solve this situation, deep and profound wisdom is needed. The reality of the global community, where one side of the Earth is starving to death and the other side is suffering from overflowing food waste, shows the urgency of human civilization. We cannot promise the future with the level of wisdom that growls to destroy each other without understanding that we are a living community aboard the only ship called the Earth.
Our only home, the Earth, is severely damaged by these low-level civilizations and is pushing for a path of annihilation. It resembles a human being who cannot grow mentally even after becoming an adult and overworks only the body with an immature mind. It's time for the global community to mature mentally. Now, the Earth is subject to management and restoration. We need to dramatically raise the level of human civilization and restore a living community called Earth to make it sustainable. And you have to be a leader who loves all the creatures in the global community and creates a better future in harmony.
Perhaps groundbreaking reforms will be needed, and in this process, various digital transformation technologies such as blockchain and metaverse will play a very important role as an infrastructure in raising the level of human wisdom. I think it is a challenge for mankind to dramatically boost human civilization through thousands of times more intellectual exchange in the cyber world than now.
The SDX Foundation is trying to promote consumer-centered carbon reduction activities that expand individual participation, not supplier-centered carbon reduction, in responding to the climate crisis, which is considered the most important challenge for mankind. As the Korean proverb says, 'Gather a dust, Becomes a mountain', we are trying to implement a meaningful carbon reduction by building a digital platform called ‘Green Platform’ and encouraging small actions of individuals through it. For example, rather than waiting for the 1.5 billion automobiles that travel around the world to become electric vehicles, it is more meaningful to make these vehicles emit less carbon. When demand decreases, supply naturally decreases.
It is important to recognize that sustainable development is not a problem for governments or the international community, but for ourselves and our children. This requires a foundation for digital transformation, and in order to implement it, we are creating it through talent donations and sponsorship from many experts and sponsors. We would like to share this platform and business model with the world in the future. In particular, we plan to give priority to countries with weak digital infrastructure so that more people can participate. This is because responding to the climate crisis is a task that all global citizens should participate in.
2. What is the Carbon Reduction Index? How does it relate to Korea's policies for carbon neutrality?
The government is mainly trying to achieve carbon neutrality by controlling power plants and factories that emit a lot of carbon. However, I think the center of carbon reduction activities should also start with changes in individuals' perceptions and behaviors. That's why we're trying to promote consumer-centered carbon reduction activities that government policies can't reach. CRI is an indicator of this consumer-centered carbon reduction activity. Therefore, I believe it can serve as a complement to the government's carbon-neutral policy.
The SDX Foundation, which pursues digital-based sustainable development, established the Carbon Reduction Committee (CRC) and 'measures individual carbon reduction performance and provides appropriate compensation for all global citizens to participate in the climate crisis response. We would like to contribute to the creation of a sustainable global village. To do this effectively, we need to build the Green Platform, a platform that accurately records, evaluates, and rewards individuals' actions.
Individuals' carbon reduction can be very minimal. However, it is very important to collect them and achieve a significant level of carbon reduction. For these efforts, solid support from local governments and companies is essential. Therefore, it is necessary to check the status of individual activities as well as the support status of local governments and companies. So, we plan to evaluate not only the members but also the policies, processes, and programs of the target organizations that support members through the Carbon Reduction Index (CRI) to evaluate the voluntary carbon reduction activities of the target organizations and suggest directions to them. Although there are various indicators related to carbon reduction, CRI is an indicator especially for carbon reduction activities of individuals.
As I said earlier, I think the voluntary participation of consumers is the most important thing for carbon reduction, so evaluating their activity is a priority, and CRI is an indicator of the efforts of local governments or companies that support them.
Here are the expected effects of CRI evaluation,
First, expand the participation of members to promote consumer-centered carbon reduction activities.
The core of carbon reduction activities is the active participation of individuals. To do this, it is necessary to encourage their participation and activities so that systematic and effective carbon reduction activities can be carried out.
For example, the code of conduct for transportation or energy with great carbon reduction effects should be treated very importantly, and recycling should also be presented after reviewing the entire process of implementing practical effects. These can be done systematically and effectively through CRI evaluation. In addition, individual activities recorded on the green platform will be the basis for providing incentives to them, and the more benefits they are given, the more greeners will be able to participate in the virtuous cycle.
Second, it provides guidelines for more effective execution of the organization's budget or policy. In order for companies or local governments that need to manage ESG to use their budgets effectively, they must implement consumer-centered policies. No matter how good the policy is, it's no use if the members don't accept it.
For example, it may be more meaningful to attach an idling limiter to all public cars that emit heavy carbon on the budget to purchase a few electric vehicles so that all vehicles can participate in carbon reduction, but it is not easy to implement without evaluation indicators. CRI allows these practically effective policies or programs to be evaluated. In addition, recycling, reuse, and reform, which individuals are interested
