©yohannlibot 출처 Unsplash요즘처럼 미국의 주요 일간지 영어 기사 읽는 재미가 쏠쏠할 때가 없어요. 한국이 여러 가지 면에서 세계를 선도하고, 훌륭한 예술가들이 영화계, 음악계,... 많은 분야에 전 세계적으로 엄청난 영향을 주고 있어서, 저를 국뽕에 취하게 하는 신문 기사를 자주 발견할 수 있습니다. 해외에 나와 있는 사람들은 한국이 잘되고 있다는 뉴스만 봐도 가슴이 먹먹해지거든요. 부모 떠나보면 효자 되고, 나라 떠나보면 애국자 되는 법인 게죠. 며칠 전 뉴욕 타임스에서 발견한 영화 #살아있다에 대한 영화 평론 기사 함께 읽자고 들고 왔어요. 단어와 문장 번역 도움 필요하신 분 계실지 몰라, 아래 정리했어요.

Oh Joon-wo, the protagonist of “#Alive,” hunkers down in his apartment and tries to wait things out.
영화 #살아있다의 주인공 오준우는 그의 집( 아파트)에 숨어 일이 해결될 때까지 기다리기를 시도한다.
*single-minded: 일념의, 한마음의, having or concentrating on only one aim or purpose.
*undead: 불멸의 technically dead but still animate.
This can only work for so long — the single-minded attackers are undead and have all the time in the world.
일념이 확실한 적들은 불멸의 존재로서 세상에 넘치는 게 시간이라, 준우의 계획은 곧 한계에 다다른다.
* siege : 포위 a military operation in which enemy forces surround a town or building, cutting off essential supplies, with the aim of compelling the surrender of those inside.
*deftly: 능숙하게 in a way that is neatly skillful and quick in movement.
*mingle: 섞다. mix or cause to mix together.
A Korean import now streaming on Netflix, “#Alive” deftly mingles the zombie and siege genres.
넷플릭스에서 현재 절찬리에 상영 중인, 한국이 만든 영화 “#살아있다”는 좀비와 포위 장르를 잘도 버무렸다.
Escalating “food is running out!” tension only adds to the lockdown suspense.
“음식이 얼마 남지 않았다!”라는 상황은 락다운의 위기 상황에 긴장감을 더욱 고조시킨다.
For his feature debut, the director Cho Il never takes his foot off the gas pedal:
그의 장편 데뷔작 - #살아있다 - 에서 조일형 감독은 결코 가속 페달에서 발을 떼지 않는다.
minimal exposition, no back stories, little dialogue, a plot that’s cut to the bone — this is a fat-free but full-flavored treat.

The world goes to pot in the film’s first three and a half minutes, when a news report announces the quick spread of a mysterious infection whose symptoms are “screaming and a bleeding of the eyes.” Also, cannibalism.
영화 시작하고 3분 30초 안에 세상은 풍비박산이 나고, 뉴스는 증세가 “소리 지르고 눈에서 피가 나는” 이상야릇한 감염의 빠른 전염을 보도한다. 게다가 식인이라니!
For almost half the running time, Joon-wo (Yoo Ah-in, who made quite an impression in the offbeat thriller “Burning” two years ago) is home alone.
준우(2년 전, 색다른 스릴러 영화 “버닝”에서 인상에 남는 연기를 펼쳤던 배우 유아인 분)는 영화 상영 시간의 절반 정도를 집에서 혼자 있는다.
Most zombie movies involve the suspenseful scavenging of grocery stores and horrifying vistas of a destroyed world.
대부분의 좀비 영화들은 긴장감 넘치는 식료품점 터는 장면이나 파괴된 세상의 끔찍한 광경들이 등장한다.
Here, days trickle by in an apartment as Joon-wo passively waits for the situation to improve.
여기서는 준우가 아파트 안에 들어앉아 상황이 나아지기를 수동적인 자세로 기다리며 시간을 보낸다.
Hopelessness hits him hard after he’s slurped his last bowl of instant noodle, but fortunately a resourceful neighbor, Kim Yoo-bin (Park Shin-hye), finally makes contact.
마지막 컵라면을 후루룩 마셔버리고 절망감이 그를 세게 때리며 엄습하지만, 다행히 장비와 음식을 잘 갖추고 있는 김유빈(박신혜 분)이 마침내 연락을 해 온다.
She is not impressed by Joon-wo at first (“Could he really be an idiot?” she muses) but quickly the pair put their gadgets, including a drone, to good use as they try to escape their building complex.
그녀는 처음에 준우에게서 좋은 인상을 받지 못하지만 (멍청인가 싶었음), 이 두 사람은 재빨리 그들의 장비 (드론 포함)을 이용해서 아파트 단지를 벗어나려고 시도한다.
But where to go?
하지만 어디로 갈까?
The only time the film stumbles on a cliché is with the late introduction of a supporting character engaging in a make-believe scenario we’ve seen many times.
이 영화가 진부 해지는 한 장면 - 우리가 가상 시나리오에서 너무나 많이 본 -은, 조연 캐릭터를 늦게 소개하는 부분이다.
*nifty: 맵시 있는, 좋은, 매력 있는 particularly good, skillful, or effective.2.fashionable, stylish
Aside from that, “#Alive” is a nifty little thriller that proves that you can always find signs of life in the most undead of genres.
그것만 빼면, 영화 #살아있다는 불멸의 존재가 가장 판을 치는 장르에서도 생명의 흔적을 항상 찾을 수 있다는 것을 증명하는 매력 있는 작은 스릴러물이다.
*far-fetched : 터무니없는, 억지로 갖다 댄 unlikely and unconvincing; implausible.
And the finale, far-fetched as it is, suggests that even a society atomized by isolation can find connection.
그리고 마지막으로, 터무니없는 그대로, 영화는 고립되고 개체화된 사회에서도 ‘연결’을 찾을 수 있다고 말하고 있다.
저는 개인적으로 유아인 배우를 응원하는 팬이라서 (별 덕질 노력은 하지 않지만), 유 배우가 나오는 영화나 드라마는 다 찾아보는 편입니다. 그래서 당연히 넷플릭스에 뜬 '#살아있다'를 지나칠 수 없었던 것이고요. 사실 좀비물은 좋아하지 않아서, 그 유명하다는 '부산행'도 아직 보지 않았는데 유 배우 덕분에 제가 좀비물을 생애 최초로 본 것입니다.
'부산행'을 본 주변 지인들은 '#살아있다'의 좀비들이 좀 연기가 못하다는 둥, 마지막에 아래서 헬리콥터 올라와 구출되는 (스포인가요?) 스토리 전개가 말도 안 된다는 둥, 오준우가 오래 못 먹고도 살이 안 빠지더라는 둥 그런 지적들을 많이 했습니다만. 저는 코로나 퀘런틴의 경험과 맞물린 시국에, 영화 속의 긴장감을 함께 느끼며, 유 배우의 연기에 감탄하며 재밌게 봤어요. 진짜 저런 바이러스 생겨서, 옆집 할아버지가 망치로 저희 집 창문 깨고 들어오는 상상도 하면서요. 다른 분들의 감상평도 궁금하네요.
