The Biggest College Essay Mistake

지금까지, 매년 학생들이 대입 원서 에세이를 쓸 때마다 저지르는 가장 큰 실수는 특별 과외활동에 대해 쓰는 것입니다. 사실, 잘 모르는 부모님들은 자신들의 고등학생 자녀들을 의도적으로 여름 프로그램에 참여시켜서 에세이에 쓸 이야깃거리를 만들어 주려 합니다. 하지만 실은, 특별 과외 활동에 대해 쓰는 것은 대부분의 경우 바람직하지 않습니다. 그 이유는 두 가지인데, 첫째로 너무 흔하고 뻔한 글이 되고, 둘째로 개인적이지 않은 글이 되기 때문입니다.

By far, the biggest college essay mistake I see students make each year is writing about an extracurricular activity. In fact, parents who do not know any better intentionally enroll their high school kids in summer programs just so the kids have something to write about in their college essays. The truth is, writing about an extracurricular activity is almost always a bad idea for college essays because of two reasons: 1) it's too common; 2) it's not personal.

효과적인 대학 에세이는 학생이 제출한 입시 원서 어디에도 나타나지 않는 학생에 대한 정보를 드러내 주어야 합니다. 만약 학생이 뛰어난 피겨 스케이터이고, 몇 차례 대회에서 상을 받았다면, 그것은 대입 지원서의 활동 부분에 기재될 것입니다. 학생이 에세이 주제로 자신의 피겨 스케이팅 경험에 대해 쓴다면, 그것은 그 학생의 지원서에서 이미 읽을 수 있는 내용의 중복이 될 뿐입니다.

Effective college essays reveal something about the student that no other part of her application reveals. If a student is a great figure skater and has won several competition awards, that would be listed in the activities section of the application. If the student writes about her figure skating experience for her essay topic, that would just be a repeat of what can be read in another part of her application.

많은 학생들과 학부모님들이 대학 에세이의 목적을 오해하고 있습니다. 대학 에세이의 목적은 학생이 성취한 일을 자랑하려는 것이 아닙니다. 대학은 학생의 성격, 인성, 특이점, 어려움, 열정, 신념, 실수, 개인적인 경험 같은 것들에 대해 알고 싶어 합니다.

Many students and parents misunderstand the purpose of the college essay. It is NOT to show off what the student has done or achieved. It is to show colleges what kind of a person the student is. They want to know about the student's character, personality, quirks, hardships, passions, beliefs, mistakes, and personal experiences that shaped them.

대학 입장에서 볼 때, 이미 지원서에 언급한 특별 활동에 대해 쓰는 것은 명백히 시간 낭비입니다. 더 이상 독특한 대학 에세이 주제라는 것은 없다고 하지만 (모든 주제는 이미 오랜 세월에 걸쳐 기존의 지원자들이 다 다루었으니까요.), 대학 에세이를 독특하게 만드는 '학생 자신'이라는 요소는 여전히 남아 있습니다. 따라서, 독특한 에세이를 쓰는 가장 좋은 방법은 개인적인 주제에 대해 쓰고, 활동이 아닌 사람에 대해 쓰는 것입니다.

When viewed from this proper perspective, writing about an extracurricular activity that is already noted on a different part of the application is clearly a waste of time. Though there is no such thing as a unique college essay topic (every topic has been written about already), the thing that makes a college essay unique is the student herself. The best way to write a unique essay is to write one that is personal, about the person, not the activity.
