지난 블로그 글에서 미국 대학 입시에서 소수자의 이점에 대해 썼습니다. 오늘은 그 반대 경우에 대해 쓰겠습니다. 너무 흔한 대학 지원자란, 매우 많은 사람이 들어가는 범주에 속하는 학생을 의미합니다. 예를 들어, 한국, 중국, 또는 인도계 여자 고등학교 졸업생이 존스 홉킨스 대학교의 생체의공학(BME) 프로그램에 지원하며 앞으로 의학 또는 의과학 연구를 추구하겠다고 말한다면, 그것은 대학 입장에서 너무나 자주 접하는 흔한 프로필입니다. 이 상황은 이런 분야에 도전하려는 아시안 학생들을 입시에서 불리한 위치에 처하게 만듭니다.

In my last blog post, I wrote about the advantage of being an underrepresented minority in college admissions. Today, I write about the opposite. An overrepresented college applicant is a student who fits into a category that is much too popular. For example, when a Korean, Chinese, or Indian female high school senior applies to the Biomedical Engineering program at Johns Hopkins, stating that they want to pursue medicine or research in the future, that's a very common profile that the college has too often seen. This puts the student in a disadvantageous position.

하지만, 만약 당신이 정말로 홉킨스 대학교의 생체의공학 프로그램에 관심이 있는 한국계 여학생이라면 어떻게 해야 할까요? 거짓말을 해야 할까요? 지원을 하지 말아야 할까요? 아니요, 만약 그게 당신의 진정한 관심사라면 물론 지원해야 합니다. 하지만 보다 매력적인 입시 후보가 되기 위해서는, 당신을 돋보이게 만들 무언가를 더 갖추어야 합니다. 당신이 흔한 아시안 지원자 범주에 속한다 해도, 예를 들어 미술 포트폴리오를 제출한다면 어떨까요? 또한 연속으로 두 해 동안 학생회 회장직을 맡았다면 어떨까요? 또한 당신이 친구들과 록 밴드 음악 그룹을 만들어 다양한 장소에서 공연한 경험이 있다면 어떨까요? 내가 너무 평범해 보이기 쉬운 상황이지만, 그 틈에서도 나를 독특하게 만들 수 있다면, 대학들이 당신을 주목할 가능성, 곧 합격 가능성이 더 커집니다.

However, what can you do if you're a Korean female student who really is interested in the BME program at Hopkins? Do you lie? Do you not apply? No, if that's your real interest, then of course you should apply, but to become a more attractive candidate, it's important to show something to the college that sets you apart. Though you may fit into a stereotypical category, what if you also submitted an art portfolio? What if you were also class president for two years in a row? What if you also played in a rock and roll band that you and your friends created and performed in different venues? Whatever you've done that makes you stand out from others in an overpopulated category will help you get noticed by colleges.

대학 입시에서 아시아계 학생을 흔한 프로필로 불리하게 만드는 또 다른 경우는, 학생들이 대입 지원서와 에세이에 의대를 목표로 한다고 의사 표시를 하는 경우입니다. 만약 당신이 아시아인이고, 언젠가 의사가 되기 위해 의대 대학원에 가고 싶다고 말한다면, 당신은 입학 담당자가 주목하지 않을 가능성이 큰 지루한 후보군으로 스스로를 밀어 넣어 버린 셈이 됩니다. 너무나 많은 아시아 학생들이 의대 대학원에 가고 싶다고 말하지만, 실제로 제가 지난 15년 동안 관찰한 바로는 매우 소수만이 그 뜻을 이룹니다. 처음부터 의대를 지망한다고 말하는 것보다 더 좋은 방법은 일단은 대학 전공에 집중하는 것입니다. 나중에 가서 의대 대학원에 진학을 할지언정, 대학에서는 음악, 역사, 심리학, 철학 등 다양한 전공을 공부할 수 있습니다. 의사가 되기 위해 반드시 다른 사람들처럼 생물학을 전공해야 하는 것은 아닙니다, 특히 대입 지원서와 에세이에 대학 공부 계획을 작성할 때에는 더욱 그러합니다. 스스로를 평범한 틀에 가둘 필요가 전혀 없습니다.

Another thing I've seen too many times is students proclaiming to colleges, in both their applications and their essays, that they want to go to medical school. If you're Asian, and you say you want to go to medical school to become a doctor someday, you just put yourself into a very boring category the will be easy to get overlooked by the admissions officer. Too many Asian students say they want to go to medical school, but in fact, in my observation over the last 15 years, a very small percentage actually make it. The better thing to do is just focus on what you want to major in college. You may indeed apply to medical school later, but in college, maybe you might pursue music, history, psychology, or philosophy. Going to medical school doesn't mean you have to major in biology like everyone else, especially when it comes to filling out your college plans on your application and essays.

나와 비슷한 조건의 사람들이 너무 많이 몰리는 곳으로 갈수록, 나는 눈에 띄기 힘듭니다. 그럼에도 당신이 나와 같은 인종 집단, 비슷한 프로필이 몰리는 그 길을 꼭 가야 하는 상황이라면, 위에서 예를 들어 언급한 것처럼, 당신의 주 관심사와 완전히 다른 독특한 활동에 참여할 것을 권합니다.

The more you fit into an overly popular category, the less you stand out. I would advise you to participate in things that are completely different from your core interest, as shown in examples above, if you plan to pursue a college and career path is just too common for your particular demographic.
