대학 입시라는 치열한 경쟁 세계에서, '소수자' 대학 지원자가 되면 큰 장점이 있습니다. 제가 '소수 민족'이라는 일반적인 표현보다 '소수자'이라는 용어를 고집한 이유는, 전자의 표현을 쓰면, 인종에만 초점을 맞춘 제한적 의미에 갇히기 쉽기 때문입니다. 물론, 미국에는 대학 진학률이 낮은 인종들이 있고, 미국 대학들은 이 소수민족 지원자를 적극적으로 모집합니다: 아프리카계 미국인, 미국 원주민, 히스패닉계 학생들을 '소수민족'의 예로 들 수 있습니다.

In the ever competitive world of college admissions, one of the most important advantages a student can have is being an underrepresented college applicant. I use the term rather than the more common phrase, "underrepresented minority" because this latter term too often evokes a limited meaning that focuses solely on ethnicity. Certainly, there are ethnic backgrounds in American colleges that are underrepresented, and colleges actively seek out these groups: African-American, Native American, and Hispanic.

However, anyone can become an underrepresented college applicant, regardless of ethnic background. This is anyone who can stand out in college admissions. For example, have you noticed that most public school elementary school teachers are Caucasian females? So if an Asian male says he is interested in pursuing primary education as his college major, he would be an underrepresented college applicant and have a better chance of getting accepted.

몇 년 전에, 저는 메릴랜드주 엘리콧 시티의 센테니얼 고등학교에 다니던 한국계 여학생을 가르치게 되었습니다. 그녀는 수학을 잘했지만 대학에서 무엇을 공부할지 전혀 모르는 상태였습니다. Many years ago, I had a Korean female student who attended Centennial High School in Ellicott City, MD. She was good at math but had no idea of what she wanted to study in college. She had studied SAT with me so I got to know her and her background fairly well. She asked for my help with college coaching as well, so I advised her to consider majoring in industrial engineering in college. She didn't even know what it was, but I explained to her that there were only a few colleges in the surrounding area that offered it, and George Washington University was one of them. However, at GWU, it was called Systems Engineering.

She took my advice and proceeded. She ended up graduating, working for a well known consulting firm in DC, then was offered an opportunity to work for McKinsey & Company, considered one of the top consulting firms in the world. She initially had doubts about her chances to get accepted at GWU, but I knew she had a better than average chance because the department was dominated by males. She was an underrepresented college applicant, and that was a strong advantage for her.

다른 학생들도 소수자 대학 지원자로 지원했기 때문에 원래 들어갈 수 없었을 대학에 입학한 많은 사례들이 있습니다. 저는 이 글을 쓰면서 학부모와 학생들이 그 어느 때보다 치열한 대학 입시의 열기를 헤쳐나가기 위해, 소수자 대학 지원자가 되는 것이 얼마나 큰 경쟁력을 가지는지, 그 중요성을 이해하기를 바랍니다.

I have many other examples of students who have gotten accepted to colleges they probably would not otherwise have gotten into because they applied as underrepresented college applicants. I write this article with the hope that parents and students understand the importance of how being an underrepresented applicant can be a huge advantage in the ever competitive world of college admissions.
