더 나은 영어회화를 위해
영어 수업을 일주일에 두 번 정도 듣는다
필리핀 외국어 선생님이
교재를 바탕으로 지도해주시는데
수업 전에 내가 쓴 에세이에서
오타나 잘못된 문구들을 바로 잡아 주신다
오늘의 주제는 어떻게 하면 영어회화를
좀 더 잘할 수 있을까? 였다
내가 예시를 들은 것은
다니엘 카너먼의 시스템 1,2였다
시스템 1은 빠른 생각 즉 이성보다 본능이
좌우하는 영역이고
시스템 2는 느린 생각 즉 행동보다 생각이
앞서는 영역이었다
내게 있어서 한국어는 모국어기에
시스템 1을 사용하기에 특별한 노력없이
바로 말하지만 영어는 시스템 2를
사용하기에 늘 효율성이 떨어졌다
어떻게 하면 영어를 시스템 1의 영역으로 끌어올까?
고민하다가 찾은 답은
영어로 말할 때 말할 내용을 한국어로 생각한 다음
영어로 전환하는 방식이 아니라
틀리더라도 그저 영어로 계속 말하는 것이었다
필리핀 선생님도 그렇게 얘기하셨다
당신의 이름이 무엇이냐고 묻는데
"What is your name? "
이렇게 완전한 문장으로 말하면 좋겠지만
Name. What?
문법적으로 틀린 문장이더라도
상대방이 알아들을 수 있다며
끊임없이 말해볼 것을 주문했다
또한 문장이나 표현을 많이 외워서
내가 쓸 수 있는 양을 늘리는 것 또한
중요하다고 하셨다
아는 만큼 말할 수 있기 때문이다
여러 말해서 무엇하랴?
실천하지 않으면 아무 소용이 없는걸
어떻게 실천해 낼 수 있을지
한 번 더 고민해봐야겠다
의식적으로 행동하지 않더라도
자동적으로 사용할 수 있는 환경을
만들 수 있는 방법을 찾는 것 말이다

How can I express my opinion more freely?
In our brain, we have two ways of the system
The first one is a very fast unconscious system
We don’t use our thought when we breathe
System one doesn’t need any effort to do it
But the second system is a little bit different
The system is so slow but it needs more time than the first one
When we study something we use the second system
In my situation to use Korean is the part of system one because I don’t need any effort to tell something in Korean
But using English is a part of system two because I should think about the contents, words and order continuously
I want to change English in system one
To do it I have to input time to learn English and to make the situation that I can contact English anywhere and anytime
To converse in English, I think the contents in Korean and I translate it into English
But that is the part of the second system so it needs more times and I can’t speak more
Recently I am training myself a new way of thinking
When I talk to other people I don’t think in Korean although I have mistakes I make an effort to speak in English directly
When I talk in English through that way I can use system one
That will be possible to talk to other people like in a normal conversation
Actually, I have mistakes when I talk in Korean.
If I will be afraid to say something wrong in English I can’t reach my goal
Failure is the mother of success
Efficiency is more important than accuracy in English
It’s my conclusion
