예나네 브런치 극장 "인턴" 1

낸시 마이어스 Nancy Meyers 감독의 영화, "인턴"을 거듭 보고, 따라 말해보고, 본문을 읽으면서 즉, 영어공부를 위해 이곳에 올려 봅니다. 제가 혼자 며칠 해 봤는데, 회화 진화에 나름 효과가 있었기 때문이지요. ^^
"인턴"을 하루나 이틀 분량의 적당한 길이로 나누어서 올립니다. 혼자 하는 것보다 함께 하면 덜 지루하고, 재미도 더해지고, 어쩌면 시너지 효과도 생길 것 같네요.
영어와 한국어 대본은 네이버 블로그에서 다운로드한 것을 손으로 받아 적어 보았습니다. 예전에 자동차 극장이 있었지요.

자, 시작합니다.
즐겁게 보시기 바랍니다.
핸드폰은 끄시고 대신 펜 하나와, 하얀 A4 용지만 준비하시면 됩니다.
벤 :
프로이트가 말했죠.
"사랑과 일, 일과 사랑. 그게 전부다."라고.
벤 :
난 은퇴했고 아내는 세상을 떠났어요.
당연히 시간이 남아돌죠. 아내가 세상을 떠난 지 3년 반이 되었어요. 그녀가 정말 그리워요.
은퇴생활요? 진행 중이지요. 창의적으로 소일하기 위해 끓임 없이 노력하죠.
처음엔 참신해서 실제로 즐겼어요. 처음엔 무단결근하는 느낌이었어요. 제가 모아 둔 마일리지를 사용해서 전 세계를 돌았어요.
문제는 어딜 가든 집에 돌아오면, 구태여 돌아다닐 필요가 없단 생각이 날 괴롭혔어요. 가장 중요한 건, 그냥 몸을 움직이는 거였어요.
아침에 일어나서 집 밖에 나가 어디든 가는 거예요. 비가 오든, 해가 쨍쨍 하든요. 7. 15분이면 스타벅스에 가요.
실례해요. 여기 합석해도 될까요? 안녕하세요?
벤 : 뭐라 설명할 수는 없지만, 제가 뭔가의 구성원이 된 것 같죠. 오늘 만나는 사람들은 숫자를 잘 몰라요. 그러니 그들한테 수치를 말할 필요는 없어요.
남은 시간을 어떻게 보내냐고요?
온갖 걸 다 하죠. 골프, 책, 영화, 카드놀이.
요가도 해봤고, 요리도 배웠어요. 화초도 가꿔보고 북경어도 배워봤어요. 다시 말해 정말 안 해본 게 없어요. 그리고 장례식도 있죠. 상상했던 것보다 일이 훨씬 많아요.
요즘 제가 다니는 여행이라곤, 아들과 아들 가족을 만나러 샌디에이고에 갈 때가 전부죠. 그들은 좋은 사람들이에요. 많이 사랑하죠. 하지만 솔직히 제가 아들 가족한테 지나치게 의존했던 것 같아요.
오해는 마세요. 난 불행한 사람은 아니에요. 정반대죠. 그저 내 인생에 어딘가 빈구석이 있고 그걸 채우고 싶을 뿐이에요. 곧이요.
그래서 오늘 이야긴데 장을 보고 나오다가 전단지를 봤어요.
"고령 인턴 채용.
"하이 벤, 당신인 줄 알았어요. 안녕하세요?"
"예, 안녕하세요?"
"이건 뭐예요?"
"인터넷 회사인데 노인 인턴을 찾네요."
"정말요? 한번 볼까요?"
- '지원자는 65세 이상으로. 정리정돈 능력이 있고, 전자상거래에 관심이 있고, 그게 뭐든, 소매를 걷고 일할 마음의 자세를 갖춘 분' -
" 이 회사는 레드 훅에 있는 낡은 공장을 인수한 회사가 아니던가요. 딸한테 들었는데 인터넷으로 옷을 판데요. 그게 어떻게 가능한지 모르겠어요."
"지원서를 업로드해야 한다네요. 만만치 않겠어요. 이것 봐요." - '자기소개서는 구닥다리니, 자기소개 동영상을 보내주세요. 유튜브나 비메오에 동영상을 업로드하세요. 파일 형식을 사용하세요. 기다리겠습니다.' -
"음.. 나를 기다리겠다는군요."
"난 지금 이게 어느 나라 말인지도 모르겠어요. 벤 오늘 저녁에 바빠요? 냉동 라자니아 드시나요? 내가 샐러드랑 만들어 드릴게요. 둘이 식사나 하죠. 전에 딱 한 번 그랬듯이요. 5개월 전인 거 기억나시죠?"
"네, 아뇨, 아뇨. 꼭 식사 한 번 해야죠. 하지만 오늘 말고 다른 날 하죠."
"벤, 당신 정말 귀여운 거 알아요?"
"아뇨."
"진짜 귀여워요. 나중에 또 봐요. 빨리 연락해요. 살날도 얼마 안 남았는데."
"알아요. 알아요. 그래요."
Ben: Freud said, "Love and work. Work and love.
"That's all there is."
Well, I'm retired, and my wife is dead.
As you can imagine, that's given me some time on my hands.
My wife's been gone for three and a half years.
I miss her in every way. And retirement?
That is an ongoing, relentless effort in creativity.
At first, I admit I enjoyed the novelty of it. Sort of felt like I was playing hooky.
I used all the miles I'd saved and traveled the globe.
The problem was, no matter where I went, as soon as I got home, the nowhere-to-be thing hit me like a ton of bricks.
I realized the key to this whole deal was to keep moving.
Get up, get out of the house, and go somewhere. Anywhere.
Come rain or shine, I'm at my Starbucks by 7:15.
- Excuse me, mind if we join you here?
- Hey, how are ya?
Ben: Can't explain it, but it makes me feel part of something.
-These guys today, they're not numbers guys.
-Don't talk figures with them.
Ben: How do I spend the rest of my days? You name it. Golf, books, movies, pinochle.
Tried yoga, learned to cook, bought some plants, took classes in Mandarin.
Xiang xin wo, wo shen me dou shiguo le. Translation, "Believe me, I've tried everything."
And then, of course, there are the funerals.
So many more than I could imagine.
The only traveling I do these days is out to San Diego to visit my son and his family.
They're great. I love 'em to pieces.
But to be honest, I think I probably relied on them way more than I should.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not an unhappy person.
Quite the contrary.
I just know there's a hole in my life, and I need to fill it. Soon.
Which brings me to today, when I was leaving the market and caught your flyer out of the corner of my eye.
Ben: Hmm. "Seniors, be an intern."
Petty: Ben, I thought that was you. Hi.
Ben: Hey.
Petty: What'd you find?
Ben: I think an Internet place is looking for senior interns.
Am I reading this right?
Petty: Let me see.
"Applicants must be over 65 years of age, have organizational skills, a genuine interest in e-commerce, " whatever that is, "and a roll-up-your-sleeves attitude."
Ben: AboutTheFit.com, isn't that the Outfit that Was...
Petty: Yeah, yeah, yeah. They bought one of those old factories in Red Hook.
My daughter says they sell clothes on the Internet. How that works, I have no idea.
Ben: Well, you have to upload the application.
That could be challenging. Listen to this, "Cover letters are so old-fashioned.

" Well, I guess that's meeting me.
Petty: I swear I don't even know what language that was. What are you doing tonight, Ben?
A frozen lasagna?
Ben: Well...
Petty: I could make a little salad, turn it into a dinner for two, like we did that time and never did again. You know that was over five months ago?
Ben: Oh, yeah. No, no, we gotta do that again, for sure, but okay if we take a rain check?
Petty: You're awful cute, you know that?
Ben: No, I didn't.
Petty: Well, it's true, you are. So I'll see you. Don't take too long, doll. You're not getting any younger.
Ben: I know, I know, I know.
Petty: All right.
