멕시코 학교 방문 [School in Mexico]

미국의 보딩스쿨(기숙학교)은 100년이 넘는 전통을 자랑하는 곳이 많다.
세계의 많은 리더들의 자녀가 미국 보딩스쿨을 선택하는 이유는 역사와 전통, 교사진의 열정, 끈끈한 동문 네트워크, 그리고 세계에서 가장 혁신적이고 토론 중심의 교육 환경 때문이다.
덕분에 보딩스쿨 교사들은 학생들과 함께 성장하며 꾸준히 연수를 받고, 전 세계를 다니며 학교에 알맞는 학생들을 찾는다. 이번에는 미국 보딩 기관이 주관한 행사로 여러 학교 선생님들과 함께 멕시코의 Cenca 학교를 방문하게 되었다.
Many boarding schools in the United States carry traditions that span over a century.
One of the key reasons why many of the world’s leaders choose American boarding schools for their children’s education is their rich history and legacy, the dedication of exceptional faculty, strong alumni networks, and some of the most innovative, discussion-based learning environments.
Because of this culture, boarding school teachers continue to grow alongside their students—pursuing ongoing professional development and traveling the world to meet future students. Through one such initiative organized by U.S. boarding institutions, I had the privilege of visiting Cenca Institution in Mexico, together with several other faculty members.
Cenca Institution 소개
Cenca Institution은 초등 교육부터 시작하여 고등학교까지 제공하는 사립제단의 학교이다.
SEP(멕시코 사립학교 표준) 기반 커리큘럼 + Cambridge 융합
멕시코에 여러 지역에 분교를 두고 있는데 올해로 개교한 지 40년이 지난 학교이다. 국제학교처럼 모든 수업을 영어로 하지는 않지만 커리큘럼은 Cambridge 기반의 커리큘럼이라서 토론, 프로젝트 기반의 수업을 기본으로 하며
많은 글로벌 프로그램을 개발하여 멕시코 학생들이 다양한 체험을 할 수 있도록 선도적으로 주최하는 학교인 듯하였다. 2025년 여름에는 한국도 방문했고, 초등 6학년 학생들은 런던을 방문해서 ( 6th grader, Royal Hospital School ) 도 방문했다고 한다.
Cenca Institution is a private foundation school that provides education from elementary through high school. The school has several campuses across Mexico and has been in operation for over 40 years. While it does not conduct all classes in English like international schools, its curriculum is based on the Cambridge framework, emphasizing discussion and project-based learning.
Cenca has also been a pioneer in developing many global programs, giving Mexican students opportunities to participate in diverse international experiences. For example, in the summer of 2025, the school organized a visit to Korea. Additionally, its 6th-grade students traveled to London, where they visited the Royal Hospital School.

Location: About 2 hours from Mexico City
Curriculum: Offers programs from elementary through high school, with a Cambridge-based curriculum
High School Program: Follows the U.S. system, grades 9–12
Tuition: Approximately USD 700 per month (around KRW 10 million per year) – considered relatively expensive compared to Mexico’s average income level
Region: An affluent area with strong industrial development, featuring many logistics centers and factories
멕시코와 한국 유학 문화 차이
[difference btw KR/ Mexico Study abroad ]
한국 학생들은 4년 이상 장기 유학을 떠나는 경우가 흔하지만, 멕시코는 1년 유학이 일반적이다.
While it is common for Korean students to study abroad for more than four years, in Mexico a one-year study abroad is more typical.
학생들이 보딩스쿨에 1년만 다녀와도 멕시코 대학 입시에 무리가 없도록 제도가 마련되어 있다.
물론 운동 특기생이나 개인적인 사정에 따라 장기 유학도 가능하다.
문화적으로는 짧지만 강렬한 경험을 중시하는 편이다.
수업 참관 및 학생들과의 만남
이번 방문에서는 학생들과 자연스럽게 대화할 수 있도록 수업 참관 기회를 제공받았다. 이후에는 1층에서 학교별 부스를 마련해 학생들이 직접 관심 있는 학교를 찾아가 질문하고 정보를 얻는 시간을 가졌다. 덕분에 학생들과 편안하게 교류하며 유학에 대한 다양한 이야기를 나눌 수 있었다.
학생들은 영어를 잘 구사했고, 학교에서는 글로벌 프로그램을 적극적으로 운영하고 있었다.
During this visit, I was given the opportunity to sit in on classes so that I could interact naturally with the students. Afterwards, booths for each school were set up on the first floor, where students could freely visit the schools they were interested in, ask questions, and gather information. This created a comfortable atmosphere to connect with students and engage in meaningful conversations about studying abroad.
The students spoke English proficiently, and the school was actively running global programs. They had already visited countries such as Korea and the United Kingdom, and they also planned to expand their one-year exchange programs in the future.

생각 (Summary)
멕시코 학생들을 더 잘 모집하기 위해서는 교환학생 프로그램을 개발하는 것이 효과적이라고 느꼈다.
한국에 있는 국제 학교 및 미국의 학교에게도 동일하겠지만, 학생들이 학교에서 느끼는 소속감, 다양성은 학교가 글글로벌 한 감각을 갖고 있는 학교로 거듭나기 위해서 꼭 필요한 관문이라 생각한다.
각 나라에서 열린 생각을 갖고 있는 교육기관과 일 년 혹은 2주라도 함께 교류할 수 있는 기회가 있다면
이보다 더 학생들에게 좋은 기회가 있을 가 싶었다.
장기 유학보다는 짧고 의미 있는 유학 경험을 선호하는 문화와도 부합
이런 기회를 제공한다면 멕시코 뿐 아니라 다른 나라 학생들에게도 매력적인 옵션이 될 것이라 생각한다
Considering the Mexico's education culture/ families preference, I felt that developing exchange programs would be an effective way to better recruit Mexican students (for long term as well).
For any school aspiring to be truly global, fostering a sense of belonging and embracing diversity are essential
If there are opportunities for collaboration with open-minded educational institutions in different countries—even for just one year or even two weeks—I believe there could be no better opportunity for students.
