잔인한 2020년의 5월.
Feat. Oprah's Commencement Speech
2020년의 5월은 미국에게 특히 잔인한 달이다. 미국의 5월이라 하면 졸업식 시즌이라 졸업을 하는 학생들도, 그들의 가족들도, 졸업생들의 새 출발을 축하해주고 함께 기뻐하는 것이 너무 당연한 달인데, 올해는 코로나 때문에 졸업식도, 파티도 없다. 대신 페이스타임으로, 줌(zoom) 화상 채팅으로 서로에게 축하인사를 건네고, 교장선생님으로부터 직접 받아야 할 졸업장은 이메일과 소포로 받게 되었다.
사람이 살면서 여러 번의 졸업식을 마주한다지만, 나에게 있어 개인적으로 가장 기억에 남는 졸업식은 고등학교 졸업식이다. 사실 유치원 졸업식 때는 정들었던 선생님들과 친구들과 마지막 인사를 나누며 그 이별의 의미를 알기엔 너무 어렸었고, 초등학교 졸업식은 따로 없었다.
(미국 사립학교는 보통 초-중고등학교가 붙어있어서 초등학교의 마지막인 '5'학년들의 졸업식은 따로 하지 않는다. 5학년이 끝나고 다른 학교로 가는 게 아니라 자연스레 6학년으로 올라가기 때문에 초등학교 졸업식은 생략하고 중학교 졸업식을 대신 8학년 때 한다.)
중학교 졸업식 때도 많이 울었던 기억이 나긴 하나, 대부분의 중학교 친구들과 같이 고등학교로 진학을 했기 때문에 그렇게 섭섭해하지는 않았던 것 같다. 그리고 미국에 막 도착해서 영어를 본격적으로 시작했을 때가 나의 중학교 시절이었어서, 중학교 생활은 나의 일상을 즐겼던 것보다 공부에 대한 스트레스가 더 컸었던 시절이었기도 하다. 하지만 고등학교 졸업식은 내게 의미가 남다르다.
잠시 나의 고등학교 시절을 생각해본다.
내가 공부를 치열하게 해 봐야겠다고 마음먹은 것은 중학교를 졸업하고 고등학교에 들어가기 전이였다. 6월에 졸업을 했고 9월에 고등학교 1학년 새 학기가 시작이 되니, 3개월 동안 정말 열심히 공부를 해서 고등학교의 시작을 전교 1등으로 박차고 올라가리라 하고 마음먹었다. 그때 당시 나는 미국에 정착한 지 이제 겨우 3년이었지만, 좋은 대학교에 가고 싶었고, 새로 시작하는 고등학교에서는 정말 잘하고 싶었던 욕심이 컸다. 한편으로는 나를 테스트해보고 싶기도 했다. 내가 정말 마음먹으면 해낼 수 있는 사람인지, 아니면 제풀에 꺾일 사람인지 보고 싶었을지도 모른다. 그래서 방학 3개월 동안 정말 공부를 열심히 했다. 내 인생에서 공부를 제일 치열하게, 열심히 했던 제1의 phase를 물어본다면 바로 '중학교 졸업 후 고등학교에 올라가기 전의 여름방학 3개월'이었다.
주말도 쉬지 않고 친구도 만나지 않고 방학 때 공부만 죽어라 했다. 결과적으로 9학년부터 12학년까지 전교 1등을 놓치지 않고 했고, 9-11학년까지 Class President를 놓치지 않았으며, 12학년 때는 학생회장까지, 학업이나 리더십 모두 놓치지 않고 할 수 있었다.
9, 10, 11학년. 정말 열심히 3년을 보냈다.
내가 열심히 하면 불가능한 것은 없다는 걸 몸소 깨달을 수 있었다.
그리고 나의 12학년 때를 생각해본다. 조금은 더 여유로웠다. 그도 그럴 것이, 9학년부터 11학년까지는 원하는 대학에 가기 위해서 공부와 여러 가지 활동에 집중했다면, 12학년이 되어서는 대학 원서를 넣고 결과를 기다리고, 대학 결과가 나오는 1-2월까지는 맘 졸이다가, 3월부터 졸업시즌인 5월까지는 주위 사람들에게 더욱더 집중할 수 있는 시간이었기 때문이다. 그래서 고등학교 생활 4년 동안 가장 기억에 남고 좋은 추억을 쌓을 수 있었던 시간 역시 12학년 때인데, 그 시간을 코로나 때문에 집에서 보냈을 졸업생들을 생각하니 마음이 아프다.
졸업식은 아마 누구에게나 특별한 시간일 거라 생각한다.
누군가에게는 지긋지긋했던 생활에 드디어 마침표를 찍는 시간일 수 도있고,
새로운 세상을 향해 한발 더 딛기 일보직전임을 알려주는 시간이 될 수도 있기에.
그래서 미국에서는 졸업생들을 위해 버락 오바마 전 대통령, 오프라 윈프리 등 유명한 연사들이 각자의 색깔로 Commencement Speech를 영상을 통해 남겼고, 오늘 포스팅에서는 졸업생들을 축하하는 마음을 담아, 내가 존경하는 오프라 윈프리의 연설에 대해 써보려고 한다. 또한, 이 연설은 졸업생들 뿐만 아니라 2020년에 코로나를 겪은 모두가 한 번쯤은 읽어 보면 좋을 듯하여 나눠본다.
(이 연설은 오프라가 졸업생들을 축하하기 위해 'Facebook Event'에서 했던 스피치다. 페이스북 같은 기업이 함께 이런 프로젝트를 만들었다는 것 역시 참 멋있다고 생각한다.)
Hello, everyone.
I know you may not feel like it, but you are indeed the chosen class for such a time as this — the class of 2020. You’re also a united class, the pandemic class that has the entire world striving to graduate with you. Of course, this is not the graduation ceremony you envisioned. You’ve been dreaming about that walk across the stage, your family and friends cheering you on — woop! woop! — the caps flung joyously in the air. But even though there may not be pomp because of our circumstances, never has a graduating class been called to step into the future with more purpose, vision, passion, and energy and hope.
1) the class of 2020: 미국은 졸업 연도에 따라 학번이 정해진다. 따라서, 2020년에 졸업하는 학생들이라 'The Class of 2020'이라고 한다.
2) the pandemic class: 2020년에 코로나가 시작이 되었고, 코로나를 겪으며 졸업하게 된 학생들. 그래서 이들을 '판데믹 학번'이라고 불렀다.
3) striving to graduate with you: 전 세계가 여러분들과 함께 졸업 (코로나로부터) 하기 위해 애쓰고 있다.
(이 표현 정말 멋진 것 같다.)
4) the caps flung joyously in the air: 졸업식 할 때 빼놓을 수 없는 "졸업 캡 던지기!"
5) never has a graduating class been called to step into the future with more purpose, vision, passion, and energy and hope: 사실 내가 졸업생인데 이 말 들었으면 정말 너무 감동했을 것 같다.
'졸업생들 중에서 너희들처럼 이렇게 큰 목적과 비전, 열정, 에너지, 그리고 희망을 갖고 미래로 갈 수 있는 학생들이 없었다'라는 뜻으로, '코로나로 인해 누구보다 힘든 시기를 보냈겠지만, 이런 시기가 있었기 때문에 너희들은 그 누구보다 큰 목적을 가지고 미래에 도달할 수 있다'는 의미다.

Your graduation ceremony is taking place with so many luminaries celebrating you on the world’s Facebook stage. I’m just honored to join them and salute you. You know, the word “graduate” comes from the Latin gradus, meaning “a step toward something,” and in the early 15th century, “graduation” was a term used in alchemy to mean a tempering or refining. Every one of us is now being called to graduate, to step toward something, even though we don’t know what. Every one of us is likewise now being called to temper the parts of ourselves that must fall away, to refine who we are, how we define success and what is genuinely meaningful. And you, the real graduates on this day, you will lead us.

7) Every one of us is now being called to graduate, to step toward something, even though we don’t know what: 우리 모두가 졸업을 하라는 부름을 받았다. 무언가를 향해 한 발짝 뻗어 가라는 것이다. 설령 그것이 무엇인지 모를지라도.
I wish I could tell you I know the path forward. I don’t. There is so much uncertainty. In truth, there always has been. What I do know is that the same guts and imagination that got you to this moment — all those things are the very things that are going to sustain you through whatever is coming. It’s vital that you learn, and we all learn, to be at peace with the discomfort of stepping into the unknown. It’s really OK to not have all the answers. The answers will come for sure, if you can accept not knowing long enough to get still and stay still long enough for new thoughts to take root in your more quiet, deeper, truer self. The noise of the world drowns out the sound of you. You have to get still to listen.

8) What I do know is that the same guts and imagination that got you to this moment — all those things are the very things that are going to sustain you through whatever is coming:
내가 확실하게 알고 있는 것은 지금의 너를 만든 너의 상상력과 끈기, 그리고 배짱이 앞으로 다가올 것들의 무게를 견디게 해 줄 것이다.
-Gut라는 단어가 참 좋다. Gut의 첫 의미는 '소화관, 장, 창자'인데 '끈기, 뻔뻔스러움, 성깔'을 쓸 때도 사용된다.
-sustain you through: 너를 지지하고 있을 것이다, 무게를 견디게 도와줄 것이다.
Sustainable, sustainability (유지 가능성) 같은 경우 sustainable fashion이라 하여 '환경 보호를 위해 오래 입을 수 있는, 오랫동안 유지가 가능한 옷'을 뜻하기도 한다.
9) It’s vital that you learn, and we all learn, to be at peace with the discomfort of stepping into the unknown. It’s really OK to not have all the answers: 너희들과 우리 모두가 불확실함에 뛰어들어야 하는 불안함 속에서도 평화를 유지하는 법을 배우는 것이 정말 중요하다. 정답을 몰라도 정말 괜찮다.
-vital: 필수적인, 핵심적인, 매우 중요한
"vita"라는 어원은 "생명"이라는 뜻이다. 따라서 vital이라고 하면 '생명에 있어서 꼭 필요한'이라는 의미가 되겠다. 그냥 "important"가 아니다. 무언가를 'vital'이라고 표기했을 때는 "진짜" 중요하다는 것!
생물의 정상적인 생리활동에 없어서는 안 될 유기 화합물? 'Vitamin' (여러분 비타민 드세요!)

So can you use this disorder that Covid-19 has wrought? Can you treat it as an uninvited guest that’s come into our midst to reorder our way of being? Can you, the class of 2020, show us not how to put the pieces back together again, but how to create a new and more evolved normal, a world more just, kind, beautiful, tender, luminous, creative, whole? We need you to do this, because the pandemic has illuminated the vast systemic inequities that have defined life for too many for too long. For poor communities without adequate access to health care, inequality is a pre-existing condition. For immigrant communities forced to hide in the shadows, inequality is a pre-existing condition. For incarcerated people, with no ability to social distance, inequality is a pre-existing condition. For every person burdened by bias and bigotry, for every black man and woman living in their American skin, fearful to even go for a jog, inequality is a pre-existing condition. You have the power to stand for, to fight for, and vote for healthier conditions that will create a healthier society. This moment is your invitation to use your education to begin to heal our afflictions by applying the best of what you’ve learned in your head, and felt in your heart. This moment has shown us what Dr. King tried to tell us. Decades ago, he understood that “we are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied into a single garment of destiny.” That’s what he said.
10) Can you, the class of 2020, show us not how to put the pieces back together again, but how to create a new and more evolved normal, a world more just, kind, beautiful, tender, luminous, creative, whole?: 흩어진 조각들을 다시 붙이려고 하지 말고 (기존에 있었던 시스템으로 다시 돌아간다는 뜻) 새로운 세상을 만드는 모습을 보여줄래? 더 친절하고, 아름답고, 빛나고, 창의적이고, 완전한 세상 말이야.
(진짜 너무 멋있다. 멋있어 멋있어! 코로나가 '없었던 시절'로 돌아가려고만 했지 이참에 새로운 세상을 만들어 나가려는 생각은 못했던 것 같은데.)
11) We need you to do this, because the pandemic has illuminated the vast systemic inequities that have defined life for too many for too long: 너희가 새로운 세상을 만들어야만 한다. 코로나가 우리 사회 곳곳에 오랫동안 침투해있었던 불공정한 모든 것들을 수면 위로 올려 세상에 알려졌기 때문이다.

And my hope is that you will harness your education, your creativity and your valor, your voice, your vote — reflecting on all that you’ve witnessed and hungered for, all that you know to be true — and use it to create more equity, more justice and more joy in the world. To be the class that commenced a new way forward, the class of 2020. Bravo. Brava, brava, brava.

14) 'harness' your education, creativity, valor, voice, vote

valor: 용기, 용감함

-equity: 공정함
-꼭 세상을 위해서 네가 가진 것을 쓰라고 당부하는 오프라. 너무 멋지다.
16) To be the class that commenced a new way forward, the class of 2020.
-commenced: 시작하는, 개시한
'Commencement Speech' 졸업 연설이라는 말도 너무 좋다. 끝나는 게 아니라 새 시작이라는 뜻.
이렇게 오프라의 진심 어린 조언이 담긴 연설을 읽어봤는데, 워낙 책도 많이 읽고 '말'을 하는 사람이라 그런지 단어 선택도, 메시지도 강렬하고 좋다. 덕분에 나도 늘어질 수도 있었던 일요일을 충만하게 잘 보낸 것 같다.
오프라의 말처럼, 위기를 극복으로, 위기를 새시작으로 생각하고 앞만 보고 달리는 내가 되어야겠다.
