오늘의 주제는 "성격에 관련된 단어" (Words about Personalities) 이다.
예전 포스팅에도 언급한바 있지만, 사람 관련된 단어들은 SAT Reading과 연관성이 아주 높다. 특히 사람의 감정, 자세, 성격 등 이런것들을 칭하는 단어들이라면 더더욱 그렇다. 주어진 지문을 읽고 작가의 의도나 글의 전체적인 무드, 흐름 등을 캐치를 해서 문제를 풀어야 하기 때문에 오늘 레슨에 있는 단어들을 공부하면 도움이 많이 될것이다.
다음은 내가 오늘 레슨을 공부하며 느낀 것, 새로 배운것들을 정리한 노트이다.
1. 새로 알게 된 단어들
ambivert
양향 성격자 / a person whose personality has a balance of extrovert and introvert features
*이 단어는 ambi = both sides 라는 어원을 알고 있어서 유추 할 수 있었다. 하지만 몰랐던 단어이므로, 여기 카테고리에 넣었다. 내/외향 둘다 가지고 있는 사람 = ambivert
truculent
잔혹한, 야만적인, 표독한, 가차없는 / eager or quick to argue or fight; aggressively defiant
saturnine
성미가 까로운, 음침한 / slow and gloomy / dark in coloring and moody or mysterious

4. foreboding
late 14c., "a predilection, portent, omen," from fore- + verbal noun from bode. Meaning "sense of something bad about to happen" is from c. 1600. Old English equivalent form forebodung meant "prophecy."
예언, 예보, 전조, (불길한) 예감 / fearful apprehension;
a feeling that something bad will happen
"fore" 이라는 root 를 소개시켜드리고 싶어서 따로 분류한 foreboding.

5. quixotic (Don Quixote)
"extravagantly chivalrous," 1791, from Don Quixote, romantic, impractical hero of Cervantes' satirical novel "Don Quixote de la Mancha" (1605; English translation by 1620). Don Quixote as the type of anyone attempting the impossible or holding impossible ideals is in English from 1670s. His name literally means "thigh," also "a cuisse" (a piece of armor for the thigh), in Modern Spanish quijote, from Latin coxa "hip" (see coxa). Related: Quixotical; quixotically.

6. 품사 틀린 것 - 복습 꼭 해야 하는 부분.
introvert - introversion (noun) - introvertness 아님.
extrovert - extroversion (noun) - extrovertness 아님.
ambivert - ambiversion (noun) - ambivertness 아님.
egocentric - egocentrism / egocentricity (noun) - egocentricism 아님.
saturnine - saturninity (noun) - saturnity 아님.
오늘 학습을 통해 느낀 것:
단어를 공부할 때 구글링을 해보는것을 적극적으로 추천한다. 특히나 visual learner 들, 즉 단어를 '시각화'해서 외우는게 더 편한 분들에게는 더더욱 추천드리고 싶은 방법이다. 나 역시 visual learner 이기 때문에 단어관련된 단어들을 보면 그림이랑 연상시켜서 외우는거 이미지가 없을 때보다 훨씬 더 수월한데, 오늘 단어 'saturnine' 을 알아볼 때 그림이 다 우중충하고, 누군가가 어두운 밤에 우산을 쓰고 있는 이미지들이 많이 떠서 단번에 '아, 저런 느낌이구나' 라는것을 깨달을 수 있었다. 그래서 안외워지는 단어가 있다던지, 단어의 뜻만 봐도 '정확하게' 어떤 느낌인지, 어떤 뜻인지 불확실하다면 구글링을 통해서 이미지를 보고 단어와 연관시켜서 외우는 방법을 추천한다.
