The Death of Klinghoffer
이스라엘의 점령으로부터 비롯된 팔레스타인의 비극은 영원히 풀 수 없는 인류사의 숙제입니다. 1985년, 팔레스타인해방전선(PLO)이 여객선을 납치하고, 휠체어를 탄 유대계 미국인인 Leon Klinghoffer가 인질로 잡혀 사망한 실화를 극화한 오페라 <The Death of Klinggoffer(클링호퍼의 죽음)>은 미국 현대음악의 거장 John Adams의 작품으로, 소재로 인해 극심한 논란에 휩싸였던 작품인데요. 2014년 뉴욕 메트로폴리탄 오페라 공연 당시 이 작품이 반유대주의를 담고 있는 데다 테러리스트를 옹호한다면서 공연을 중단하라는 시위가 벌어지기도 했습니다. 이에 대해 작곡가는, 이 오페라는 어느 특정한 입장을 대변하는 것이 아니라, 정치적 상황에 의해 죽음에 내몰렸던 영혼을 위로하는 수난곡이라는 입장을 밝히기도 했습니다.
