수평적 / 확장적 진보 : 효과가 입증된 것을 카피하는 것
수직적 / 집중적 진보 : 새로운 일을 하는 것
페이팔의 공동항업자 피터 틸의 제로 투 원을 읽다보면 위의 두 개념이 나온다.
심리학을 공부하고 연구소를 운영하면서 깊은 생각을 하게 하는 두 가지 개념이다.
수평적이고 확장적 진보는 특정 전공이나 라이센스를 가진 많은 사람들이 걸어가는 길이다. 심리상담센터가 큰 예이다. 임상심리, 상담치료, 놀이치료, 미술치료 등의 학위 내지는 자격증을 소유하고 전문직으로서 개인의 정서적 개선을 위해 진보를 하는 형태이다.
수직적이고 집중적 진보는 내가 운영하는 연구소의 특징적 요소이다. 효과가 입증되었다는 것을 그대로 카피하는 대신에, 다양한 조합을 통해 개인의 정서적, 인지적, 인격적, 그리고 사회적 성장을 위해 노력해 온 기관이다. 면대면 상담으로 천천히 문제를 개선하는 대신에, 혁신적인 장비나 도구들의 도입과 조합을 서슴치 않았다. 물론, 장비와 도구의 각각의 연구결과나 효과성은 아주 까다롭게 검토해 왔다.
다만,
새로운 시도는 대중에게 설득이 필요하다.
새로운 시도의 설렘과 새로운 것에 대한 책임을 향한 열정.
이것은 나의 10년의 삶을 반영한다.
지난 10년간 끊임없이 배우고 도입하고 적용한 것들은 우리 연구소와 함께 했던 이들에게는 행복감, 성취감, 사명감 등의 표현만으로도 벅차오르는 단어들로 가슴에 새겨졌지만...
끊임없이 새로오는 이들에게 설명을 반복하다 보니
우리가 하는 일을 좀 알려 봐야겠다는 생각이 들었다.
나와 우리 연구원들이 하는 가치 있는 일들을 좀 알려 놓고, 이 것이 다시 수평적 확장을 거듭하게 될 때는 또 뭔가를 더해 수직적 진보를 하게 되지 않을까 ...
앞으로 내가 심리학자로서 하는 일, 걸어온 길, 경험했던 일 들을 공유해보려고 한다.

If you read Zero to One by Peter Thiel, a co-founder of PayPal, you'll see these two concepts.
These are two concepts that I've been thinking about a deeply as I study psychology and run my own institute.
Horizontal and extensional progression is the path of many people with a specific major or license. Counseling centers are a great example. People with degrees or licenses in clinical psychology, counseling, play therapy, art therapy, etc. are advancing as professionals to help individuals be more comfortable emotionally.
Vertical and intensive progression is the hallmark of my institute. Instead of copying what has been proven to work, the institute has been working on the emotional, cognitive, personality, and social growth of individuals through various combinations. Instead of slowly solving problems through face-to-face counseling, the institute has not hesitated to introduce and combine innovative devices and techniques. Certainly, the research and effectiveness of each device and technique has been rigorously reviewed.
However,
the public needs to be convinced.
The excitement and the passion for taking responsibility for something new.
It reflects the decade of my life.
The things I've learned, adopted, and applied over the past decade have been engraved in my heart with words like euphoria, fulfillment, and a sense of mission that are overwhelming to those of us who have been with the Institute...

I realized that I needed to explain what we do.
I thought that I should share some of the valuable work that I and my researchers are doing, and then, when it comes time to expand horizontally again, I will add something else and make vertical progress...
I'm going to share what I do as a psychologist, the path I've taken, and the experiences I've had.
