IB 교육의 장점
International Baccalaureate
줄여서 IB라고 부른다. IB는 유럽을 중심으로 공동주관하고 있는 국제적인 시험으로 명성이 높다. IB 본부가 인정하는 학교에서 2년간 수업을 받은 후 공통으로 실시하는 입학시험을 통해 자신의 능력을 인정받고, IB 제도를 실시하는 가맹 국가의 대학에 입학하거나 시험을 볼 수 있는 자격을 부여받게 된다.
현재 대한민국에는 21년 기준 외국인 대상의 국제학교 11개교, 경기외고, 충남삼성고, 경북사대 부설 초중학교가 있고, 대구시교육청, 제주시교육청, 충남교육청이 공교육 체제 안에서 IB 교육 시스템을 한국형으로 접목하여 운영 중이다.
국제학교 혹은 외고, 교육열이 높은 지역의 IB 교육 학교가 많이 분포하는 만큼, 귀족교육이라는 별명을 가지고 있기도 하다.
나는 지난 10년간 임상장면에서 상담을 진행하면서 학부모들과 학생들을 마주했던 경험자이다. 또한, 한 아이의 엄마이다. 교육에 대해 많은 생각을 해볼 수밖에 없는 입장에서, 현 교육시스템의 대안으로 떠오르고 있다는 IB 교육에 대해 말해보고자 한다.
IB교육은 광범위하다
IB교육은 학생들에게 다양한 학문 분야를 포괄적으로 제공한다. 이를 통해 학생들은 폭넓은 지식을 습득하고, 다양한 관점에서의 문제해결능력을 키울 수 있다는 장점이 있다.
개인적으로 아주 마음에 드는 부분이다. 넓게 가는 IB 교육의 특징은 한국의 주입식 교육과 상당히 다른 방향성을 가지기도 한다. "광범위", "포괄적", "폭넓은", "다양한"의 단어들은 결국 넓은 범위의 이해와 화합을 추구하지만, 우리에게 익숙했던 "정답"을 맞춰내는 과정이 크게 존재하지 않다는 이야기이기도 하다.
IB 교육은 창의성을 추구한다
창의성은 독창적이고 적절하게 유용한 어떤 것을 생성해 낼 수 있는 능력이다. 또한 기존에 있던 생각이나 개념들을 새롭게 조합해 내는 것과 연관된 정신적인 과정이기도 하다. 창의성을 추구하는 교육의 중요성 혹은 당위성에는 누구도 이의를 제기하기 힘들 것이다.
개인적으로 창의성의 중요성에 대해 이야기할 때 교육심리학자 폴 토렌스의 Survival Pilots 이야기를 응용하곤 한다. 생존비행사들은 비행기의 사고나 추락상황에서 효과적인 대응과 해결책을 찾아 생존을 해야만 한다. 이를 위해 창의력과 문제해결력이 필요한데, 극단적인 상황 속에서 주어진 자원과 상황을 최대한 활용할 수 있는 능력, 이 것은 개인의 생존능력과도 연관이 될 수 있는 필수 불가결한 기능이다.
창의의 중요성은 그저 창의적이고 확장적 사고는 필요하다는 개념에 머무르는 것이 아니라, 지구 역사를 통해 생존을 거듭해 온 인류에게 꽤 근본적인 기능이었다는 것부터 인정한다면 IB 교육에서 강조하는 창의성이 좀 더 이해될 수 있을 것이다.
IB 교육은 비판적 사고능력을 중시한다
비판적 사고능력은 유교사상이 기반이 된 한국문화에서는 받아들이기 불편한 감도 있는 것이 사실이다. 한국에서 고등학교까지 나온 나 또한 미국에서의 대학원 시절, 매번 Critique을 제출하고 토론을 하는 과정이 쉽진 않았다.
하지만 익명성에 대한 보호가 강화되면서 비판에 조금 더 자유로워진 이 사회의 모습이 보인다.
다만, 교육에서 접근하는 비판적 사고능력을 기르는 학습에는 '건강한'이라는 수식어가 붙어야 할 것이다.
IB 교육은 건강한 비판적 사고능력 향상을 강조한다. 다른 사람의 의견을 존중하고 이해하되 내 의견을 설득력 있게 내보이는 것. 그 설득력을 강화시키기 위한 생각을 건강하게 말하고 써내는 훈련들. IB 교육에서 중요시하는 요소들이며, 나도 상담 중 부모님들에게 아이들의 문해력을 향상하는 기술로 제시하는 해결책이기도 하다.
IB 교육은 국제적 화합을 목표로 한다
이에 대해서는 IB 교육의 역사에 대해 간단하게 언급하고 가야 할 듯하다. 1968년 IBO (International Baccalaureate Organization)에 의해 개발된 IB 교육은 해외 파견 교사들의 자녀들을 위해 처음으로 만들어졌다. IB 교육의 목표 자체가 국제적인 교육체계를 갖추고 학생들의 종합적인 발달과 국제적 이해를 촉진하는 것이다.
국제적 이해와 화합을 통한 글로벌 시민
국제적 이해와 화합을 통해 글로벌 시민으로서 성장한다는 거창한 문구는, 이와 같이 IB 역사에 모두 드러나 있다.
나 역시도 미국에서 발달심리를 첫 전공으로 시작했지만, 점차 인간의 발달에 대한 사회적, 생물학적 관점과 함께, 사회의 구조와 및 성장에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 각 학문 영역의 융합을 경험하며 대학원 과정을 거치게 되었다. 이런 경험이 있기에, 임상장면에서 개인의 심리적 개선에만 목적을 두기보다, 개인의 사회적 기능 회복을 통해 궁극적으로 정서적 안정성을 끌어올리는데 초점을 맞추는 편이다.
2021년 공식화된 대한민국의 선진국 지위를 고려할 때, 이해와 화합은 대한민국에서도 진심으로 필요한 요소가 되었다. 한국의 고등교육까지 마쳐본 80년대 생의 경험상, 현재의 교육이 제도적인 꿈틀거림에 비해 선진국의 모습을 내부까지 갖춰내기에는 시간이 다소 걸릴 것 같아 안타까운 마음이다.
그래도, IB 교육의 한국화가 여러 정치인들의 공약으로 나오기도 하고, 실제 지자체 범위에서 적극적으로 IB 교육의 본질을 수용해 보고자 하는 현실은 꽤 긍정적으로 다가온다.
'IB 교육에 대한 단상'이 타이틀인데, 조금 글이 길어졌다.
교육에 대한 고민은 학창 시절부터 지속되어 온 바라 시작하면 할 얘기가 많다. 질문이 많던 학생이었고, 교과 관련 학원을 다니길 강력하게 거부했었던 나는 학교의 수업시간이 참 좋았다. 잘 가르쳐주시는 선생님들은 반짝거리는 눈으로 선생님의 시선을 좇았고, 수업이 만족스럽지 않으면 즉각적인 질문을 하던 초등학교, 중학교 시절을 보냈다.
이런 학생이 성장하여
심리학을 전공하고,
사람을 탐구하는 직업을 가진 채
한 아이의 엄마가 되었으니
IB 교육이 얼마나 매력적이었을까
이번 글에서는 개인적으로 보는 IB 교육의 장점에 대해 적어보았고, 다음 글에서는 IB 교육의 현실적 한계점을 다뤄보려 한다.
International Baccalaureate
The International Baccalaureate (IB) is an international examination program organized by a group of European countries. After two years of study at an IB-accredited school, students take a common entrance examination to prove their abilities and qualify for admission to a university in a member of the IB system.
In Korea, there are currently 11 international schools for foreigners, Gyeonggi Foreign High School, Chungnam Samsung High School, and elementary and middle school of Gyeongbuk National University as IB schools. Daegu City Office of Education, Jeju City Office of Education, and Chungnam National Office of Education are operating the IB education system in Korean format within the public education system.
As there are many international schools, foreign schools, and IB schools in areas with high educational expectations, it is sometimes labeled as an aristocratic education.
I have been counseling parents and students in a clinical setting for the past 10 years. I am also a mother of one child. As a mother of a child, I can't help but have a lot of thoughts about education, and I'd like to talk about IB education as an alternative to the current education system.
IB education is broad-based
The International Baccalaureate offers students a wide range of academic disciplines. This allows students to acquire a wide range of knowledge and develop problem-solving skills from different perspectives.
I personally love this aspect of the IB education, which is quite different from the Korean system of indoctrination. The words "broad," "inclusive," "comprehensive," "wide-ranging," and "diverse" mean that there is a wide range of understanding and unity, but also that there is not much of the " correct answer" process that we are used to.
IB education promotes creativity
Creativity is the ability to produce something original and appropriately useful. It is also a mental process involving new combinations of existing ideas or concepts. It's very difficult to argue with the importance or validity of teaching creativity.
Personally, when I talk about the importance of creativity, I like to use educational psychologist Paul Torrence's story of Survival Pilots. Survival pilots have to survive an airplane accident or crash by finding the most efficient responses and solutions. This requires creativity and problem-solving, the ability to make the best use of resources and circumstances in extreme situations, which is an indispensable skill that can also be linked to personal survival.
The importance of creativity can be better understood if we recognize that it is not just a concept that we need to think creatively and expansively, but that it has been a fundamental aspect of human survival throughout the history of the planet.
IB education emphasizes critical thinking skills
Critical thinking skills are not always easy to come by in Korean culture, which is based on Confucianism. As a Korean high school graduate student in the U.S., I found the process of submitting critiques and engaging in discussions challenging.
As the protection of anonymity has been strengthened, however, I see a society that is more open to criticism.
I would add, though, that the approach to learning to develop critical thinking skills in education should be labeled "healthy".
The IB education emphasizes the development of healthy critical thinking skills. Respecting and understanding the opinions of others, but being able to present your own in a convincing way, and practicing healthy ways of speaking and writing to strengthen that conviction. These are the elements of an IB education that I value and the solutions I offer to parents in my counseling sessions as techniques to improve their children's literacy skills.
IB education aims for international harmony
It's worth mentioning a little bit about the history of IB education. Developed by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) in 1968, IB education was first created for the children of expatriate educators. The goal of IB education is to create an international education system and promote students' comprehensive development and international understanding.

This big phrase, developing global citizenship through international understanding and harmony, is reflected in the history of the IB.
I myself started out as a developmental psychology major in the United States, but my graduate studies exposed me to the social and biological perspectives of human development and the convergence of disciplines that can influence the structure and growth of society. As a result of this experience, my clinical work tends to focus on restoring social functioning and ultimately emotional stability, rather than solely on psychological improvement.
Given South Korea's official status as a developed country in 2021, understanding and harmony have become a sincere need in the country. From my experience, when I completed my higher education in South Korea, I am afraid that it will take some time for the country to become a developed country from the inside out, as opposed to its current institutional struggles.
However, it is quite positive to see that the Koreanization of IB education has been promised by various politicians and that local governments are actively trying to embrace the essence of IB education.
The title of this article is 'A Brief Presentation on IB Education', but it's a bit long.
I've been thinking about education since I was a student, so there's a lot to talk about. As a student with a lot of questions and a strong refusal to attend a course-related institute, I loved the classroom at school itself. I spent my elementary and junior high school years following the teacher's gaze with sparkles and asking immediate questions if I was not in agreement with the lesson.
