교회를 오래 다녀도 기독교가 무엇인지, 믿음은 무엇인지, 하나님은 누구인지에 대해 체계적으로 배우지 못하면, 그저 어깨너머로 듣고 본 대로 자신의 신앙을 유지하는 경향이 클 수 있다. 물론 교회에서 신자들을 위해 다양한 교육을 제공하지만, 무엇보다도 반복적으로 가르쳐야 할 것은 기독교의 ABC 일 것이다. 기독교에 대한 기초를 알려주는 교리문답 가운데, 하이델베르크 교리문답이 좋은 선택지가 될 것이다.
장로교 배경의 신자들에게는 웨스트민스터 교리문답이 익숙하겠지만, 그것과 더불어 하이델베르크 교리문답을 가까이 하면 좋겠다. 웨스트민스터 교리문답은 "사람의 제일 되는 목적"은 "하나님의 영광"이라는 말로 시작하며, 믿음에 대한 큰 그림을 그리고 있는 듯 보인다. 반면 하이델베르크 교리문답은 인간의 비참함, 구속과 은혜, 은혜에 대한 감사와 순종의 삶 등 3개의 카테고리로 나누어지고, 인간의 삶의 유일한 위로(comfort)는 오직 예수 그리스도임을 강조하면서 시작한다. 두 교리문답 모두 신자들에게 유익하겠다.
몇 주간에 걸쳐서 살펴본 이 책은, 하이델베르크 교리문답에 대해 저자의 생각이 묻어나면서도 교리문답에 집중하고 있는 면이 좋다. 옛날 영어로 되어 있는 교리문답을 오늘날의 상황에 맞추어 설명을 하고 있어서 쉽게 읽을 수 있다. 1년에 한 번씩 반복해서 읽는다면 신앙에 도움이 되겠다. Kevin DeYoung의 <The Good News We Almost Forgot>를 읽고.

Even after many years in church, if we never learn systematically what Christianity is, what faith means, and who God is, we may end up holding on to a faith formed only by what we hear and see from others. Of course, churches provide many kinds of teaching, but what we need most is the repeated reminder of Christianity’s ABCs. Among the resources that lay this foundation, the Heidelberg Catechism is an excellent choice.
For those from a Presbyterian background, the Westminster Catechism may feel more familiar. Yet, it is also worthwhile to draw near to the Heidelberg Catechism. The Westminster Catechism opens with the statement, “Man’s chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever,” presenting a grand vision of faith. The Heidelberg Catechism, on the other hand, is divided into three parts—human misery, redemption and grace, and a life of gratitude and obedience—and begins by declaring that the believer’s only comfort in life and in death is Jesus Christ. Both catechisms are deeply beneficial to believers.
Over the past few weeks, I have been reading Kevin DeYoung’s book. I appreciated how his own reflections are present, yet the focus remains on the Catechism itself. The book explains the old English text in today’s context, making it very accessible. Reading it once a year would be a great help to anyone’s faith.
