"미국 대학 가운데 디자인 전공이 가장 우수한 대학은 어딜까?" 이 질문에 한 가지 답만 있는 것은 아니다. 유에스 뉴스 앤 월드 리포트가 내놓은 대학 리스트가 다르고, Niche가 내놓은 자료가 다르다. 또 College Factual 랭킹이 다르다.
오늘은 Niche가 내놓은 자료를 참고로 한다.
우리가 흔히 디자인 전공을 하려면 4년제 예술 전문대학으로 가야 한다고 생각을 한다. 한국인들이 대체적으로 아는 예술 전문 대학들은 다음과 같다. 이를 표로 만들면 다음과 같다.
흔히 미술 대학을 분류하면 1) 4년제 예술 전문대학 2) 종합대학(사립/주립) 미술대학 3) 학부 중심대학(리버럴 아츠 칼리지) 미술 전공으로 나눌 수 있다. Niche는 전체 디자인 가운데 1위로 USC를 꼽았다. USC 미대는 the Roski School of Art and Design로 불린다. 이 미술대학은 1883년에 설립됐다.

4위는 RISD다. 여기서 비로소 예술 전문대학이 나오기 시작한다. 그러니까 일반적으로 한국인들이 아는 미술 전문대학보다 종합대학 미대가 랭킹에서도 앞서고 들어가기도 쉽지 않다.
미술 이 가운데서 디자인을 전공하려는 학생들은 무조건 예술 전문대학 쪽을 선택한다. 그러나 종합대학 미대가 더 우수한 학생들이 모인다. 예술 전문대학의 경우 100% 국제학생들에게는 재정보조/장학금을 주지 않는다. 그러나 종합대학 미대 그 가운데 사립대학들은 국제학생들에게 재정보조/장학금을 주는 대학이 꽤 많다. 따라서 디자인을 전공하려고 하는데 경제적 여건이 안 좋아 재정보조/장학금을 꼭 받아야 하는 학생이라면 종합대학 가운데 국제학생들에게도 재정보조/장학금을 주는 대학을 찾아서 지원하면 경제적 어려움을 해결할 수 있다. <미래교육연구소>
