화혼의 길: 새벽 어스름에서 황혼까지

2017년 아세안문화원의 개관을 알리는 전시로 마련된 기획전 <화혼지정>(華婚之情)은 아세안 회원 국가의 ‘혼례문화’를 그 첫번째 화두로 꺼냈습니다. 혼례라는 인류보편의 제도에서 파생된 각국의 문화인류학적 특수성과 현재적 의미를 성찰하는 자리가 될 것입니다. 따라서 본 전시는 혼례의 역사성과 특수성을 시각화하는 데서 나아가 문화 간의 섞임과 스밈이 그 어느 때보다 역동적으로 일어나고 있는 오늘날 아세안 공동체의 다양한 삶의 모습과 문화적 연결망을 종횡으로 직조하여 보여줄 것을 제안합니다.
전시에서 명명하는 ‘화혼’이란 타인의 결혼을 아름답게 높여 칭하는 말로, 이는 서로 다른 가치를 지닌 이들이 사랑하며 쌓아나간 신뢰를 바탕으로 불투명한 미래를 담보하고, 공동체 안에서의 혼인 의식을 행함으로써 공인된 가정을 일구어 나가는 삶의 책임감과 무게에 대한 수사이기도 합니다. 그렇기에 개인 간의 우연한 만남이 화혼으로 이행하는 과정은 의례나 제도 차원에만 머물지 않으며, 의미 있는 순간들을 함께 만들어 나가는 생의 경험 속에서 완성되어 나갑니다. 이를테면, 새벽녘 어스름을 뚫고 미지의 길을 나선 소년 소녀가 나이들어감에 따라 성인이 되고, 단단해져 가는 인간적인 분투와 화해의 과정이기도 합니다. 전시의 출발은 분명 푸른 빛 속에 잠긴 새벽 같았지만, 저 멀리 보일 듯한 붉은 황혼을 좇아가며 거리를 좁히는 방식으로 진행되었습니다.
‘혼례’라는 주제는 탈 민족, 탈 국가적 보편성을 아우르면서도 저마다의 민속과 의례에 내재된 특수성의 서사가 교차하기에 우리에게 새로운 역사문화적 탐구의 좌표들을 제시합니다. 드넓게 펼쳐진 미완의 좌표들 위에서, 이번 전시는 아세안 결혼 문화의 다채로움 속에 깃든 일상성과 이질적 모습들이 보편의 가치로 수렴되도록 하는 중요한 출발점이 될 것입니다.
순환의 구도: 혼례의 서사와 의례, 다시 사람들의 이야기로
전시는 크게 세 부분으로 개념화되어 구성되었습니다. 결혼에 대한 집단의 서사와 개인의 내밀한 기록들, 민족 설화와 지역의 풍습이 특정한 형식으로 결정화된 혼례의 증거와 담지체들, 마지막으로 ‘그때 그곳’이 아닌 ‘지금 이곳’을 살아가는 사람들의 일상 이야기로 귀환하게 됩니다. 그 안에서 큰 이야기와 작은 이야기가 교차하고, 과거의 유물과 현재의 해석이 담긴 작업들이 어우러집니다. 전자가 흔히 고정된 실체라고 인식된다면, 후자는 그것들을 바라보는 시선과 해석, 즉 변화가능한 창작-지식지라고 할 수 있습니다.
이러한 교차, 순환의 구도 안에서 혼례를 둘러싼 개인과 집단의 기록, 역사적 유물, 생활사에 대한 예술적 접근을 통해 개인의 삶과 집단의 문화를 새롭게 구성하고 확장하여 결혼의 순간 뿐만 아니라 그 안에서 전개되는 찬란한 삶의 순간들을 전시의 풍경 안에서 비추고자 합니다.
<화혼지정>의 도입에 해당하는 ‘혼담’ 婚談 섹션에서는 결혼과 관련된 개인과 집단의 서사를 통해 전시의 포문을 엽니다. 혼례를 결정 짓는 과정에서 양측을 이어주는 비밀스러운 언어 안에 저마다의 문화적 원형과 지역 특수성이 내재되어 있습니다. 전시에서는 혼례를 둘러싼 기록 문화를 그대로 재현하는 것 보다는, 각각의 상징적 언어들이 발화되면서 표출되는 독특한 심상들에 주목하였고, 궁극적으로는 그 이질성들이 합류하는 집단 서사의 보편성을 제시하고자 하였습니다. 다양한 채널을 통해 수집된 고전적 문장들, 혼례 문서, 사적 기록들을 병치시켰습니다. 그리고 동시대적 감수성으로 혼례의 언어들을 독해할 수 있도록 시각화하였습니다.
전시의 중추적 무대를 열어나가는 두 번째 섹션 ‘혼례’ 婚禮 에서는 일생 의례 중에서도 정수에 해당하는 혼례의 특별한 순간들을 포착하고자 하였습니다. 각 국가의 공예전통과 민속적 미감이 응축된 혼례 복식과 다채로운 혼례 상징물, 장신구, 의례 용품들이 한데 어우러져 소개됩니다. 아세안 10개국의 적극적 기증과 대여를 통해 한 곳에 모인, 총 300여 점 이상의 방대한 유물들은 개별체로써, 때로는 집합을 구성하면서 진귀한 시각성을 구축하게 됩니다. 혼례 유물 컬렉션 이외에도 설명을 돕기 위한 텍스트와 사운드, 영상 자료가 어우러지면서 아세안 혼례 문화의 지형 전반을 현대적인 방식으로 풀어냅니다.
마지막 섹션인 ‘혼인’ 婚姻 은 결혼에 대한 보다 내밀하고 특수한 이야기들을 바탕으로 구성됩니다. 세대에서 세대로 이어지는 개인들의 만남과 화합, 사회적으로 구성되는 삶, 이주와 정주에 대한 이야기가 결혼을 중심으로 사방 교직됩니다. 비로소, ‘결혼’의 의미는 의례와 전통으로부터 확장되어 그 이후에 펼쳐지는 특정한 삶의 순간들로, 열린 결말의 프레임으로 이동하게 됩니다. 이를 통해, 결혼을 통해 가시화된 아세안 공동체 내 삶의 모빌리티와 문화적 변곡점들에 대해서 성찰할 수 있는 지점들을 마련하였습니다.
과정 속의 전시, 열린 질문들과 미완의 대답들
전시에 초대된 기획자로서 전시를 만들어 감에 있어, 몇 가지 단순한 원칙을 가지고 전시를 임했습니다. 전시의 기법을 과시하고 지식을 나열하기보다는 마지막까지 호기심을 유지하면서, 공부하는 데 가장 많은 시간을 쏟자는 것이 첫째였습니다.
둘째, 각 국가와민족의 경계를 획정하고 차이점을 두드러지게 하기 보다는, 이방인의 시선에서 각 국가와 민족, 커뮤니티가 연결되는 지점을 추적하고자 했습니다. 그 방대한 지형도는 미처 완성되지 못했지만, 미완의 시간들이 못내 즐거웠습니다.
그래서 이번 전시는 한 지붕 안에 모여 있는 가정, 여느 동네의 풍경처럼 시각화 하려고 노력하였습니다. 높은 가림막과 기념비적 좌대, 차단 시설은 가능한 없앴고, 어느 방향에서건 관람이 가능하도록 개방적인 공간을 연출했습니다. 그래서 경계 침범에 대한 긴장감 보다는 상호 존중과 어울림이 공간 안에서 지배적인 가치로 작동합니다.
끝으로, 의례를 특정한 순간들을 그대로 포착하고 재현함으로써 고유한 전통과 문화를 그저 이국적인 풍경으로 대상화하고자 하는 것을 가능한 피하고자 했습니다.
얼마 만큼은 그 동안 우리와 아세안 국가 사이에 존재해 온 서로의 거리감과 몰이해를 인정하고, 지금의 시선으로, 우리의 언어로서 하나의 유물 안에 서려있는 장구한 역사적 사사를 상상하고, 미약한 단서라도 흥미롭게 들여다 보려고 했습니다. 그럼에도, 여전히 수수께끼가 많이 남아 있습니다. 전시가 시작된 후, 혹은 끝난 후 비로소 더욱 활발한 의견 교환과 자료 수집이 이뤄지기를 기대합니다.
준비 과정에서 축적된 지식을 아낌없이 나누어준 협력 기관들에 감사드리고, 통찰력 있게 아세안 문화를 바라보고, 각자의 언어와 형식으로 우리 앞에 서 있는 이국의 물품과 의례를 번역해준 창작자들에게 고맙습니다. 이 전시를 위해 누군가는 시를 썼고, 넉 달 여 동안 매일 베틀을 짰으며, IT 강국답게 동남아 혼례 이미지를 실시간으로 검색, 중계해주는 미디어 프로그램을 개발했고, 시각 디자이너는 혼례와 관련된 10개국의 격언과 속담을 독창적인 조형 언어로 풀어 냈습니다.
아세안문화원의 협력 아래, 현장의 동료 기획자와 연구자들은 방대한 정보를 알맞은 크기로 가공하고, 새롭게 발굴하고자 즐겁게 일했습니다. 각국에서 기증해주신 아름다운 유물들의 성좌 속에 흩어진 소박한 노력과 지금 여기, 한 자리에 모여 발광하는 유물들끼리의 상호 어울림을 발견해 주시기를 소망합니다.

The Road to Hwa Hon: From Dawn till Dusk
The exhibition, Celebrating the Beauty of Marriage – ASEAN seen through Wedding Traditions and Cultures is held to celebrate the inauguration of the ASEAN Culture House in Busan, Korea. The show is a display of the wedding cultures of the ASEAN countries, which provides an opportunity to review the diverse cultural-anthropological characteristics, and the present-day signi cances of a universal system. This exhibition not only aims to visually showcase the historical characteristics, but also the lifestyles, and the cultural networking of the ASEAN countries in today’s world, where di erent cultures are being blended and merged together more than ever before.
The term “화혼” (華婚, Hwa-hon) which is a part of the Korean title of the exhibition is an honori c expression of another couple’s beautiful marriage. It also signi es the responsibility and the weight of the life of two people who hold di erent values building trust based on their love for each
The theme of wedding encompasses universality that transcends race and national borders. It also holds the unique narratives that are embedded in each of the peoples and their etiquettes. Therefore, the theme serves as a proposal of new indexes for historical-cultural exploration. This exhibition will be an invaluable starting point for bringing together the universal values that can be found among the diverse and di erent wedding cultures of ASEAN.
The Cycle of Narrative and Ceremony of Matrimony, and Stories of the People
The exhibition is divided into three main concepts: the compilation of stories on weddings; marital objects that re ect the regional tales and traditions; and stories of people, not from the “good old days” but those who are living and breathing here and now. Stories big and small intertwine as the relics of the past and their modern takes are displayed together. If the former is seen as the constant, then the latter is the perspective and interpretation, in other words, the variable creative knowledge.
In this cyclical and intersecting composition, the personal lives and collective culture is newly structured and expanded through the various records on weddings, historical artefacts, and an artistic approach to everyday life, to thereby highlight life’s splendid moments within the exhibition space.
Hon-dam: The Narrative of Marriage
The exhibition opens with a section called Hon-dam, which focuses on the personal and collective narrative on the wedding. Unique cultural archetypes are embedded in the secretive language that is used to bridge two families together in the process of matchmaking. The focus here are the peculiar mental images that are conjured when symbolic rhetoric is uttered, rather than reproducing the culture of recording matrimony. Ultimately, the goal is to highlight the universality of the collective narrative that is derived from the congregated peculiarities. Classic sentences gathered through various channels, marriage documents, and personal records are displayed together in a way that allow the viewers to interpret the marriage vernacular with modern sensibilities.
Hol-lyeh: The Ritual of Marriage
The second, and main section called Hol-lyeh aims to capture the most special of special moments in life: the wedding. More than 300 items such as wedding attire that is the epitome of traditional craftsmanship and folk aesthetics, and an assortment of personal ornaments, and ceremonial objects are on display, courtesy of the 10 ASEAN countries’ generous donations and loans. This large collection of artefacts is a visual panoply each on their own, but also in groups. Text, sound, and video materials further aid in exploring the ASEAN wedding culture landscape in a modern light.
Hon-in: The Relationship of Marriage
The last section titled Hon-in delves deeper into the stories of marriage. Tales of meeting and coming together, creating a life within a community that passes down from generation to generation, emigration, and settlement are weaved together, with the wedding and marriage at its center. The meaning of matrimony now expands from tradition and ceremony to the important moments in life, to a frame with an open ending. Such stories provide the viewers with the opportunity to further ponder on the mobility of life within the ASEAN community, and the cultural changes.
Exhibition of Process, Open Questions and Incomplete Answers
I kept a handful of key principles the entire journey. The rst was to spend much of the time studying, and to remain curious till the end, rather than focusing on enumerating the facts
Lastly, I aimed to refrain from objectifying the unique traditions and cultures as exotic, by capturing and reproducing certain moments. I was committed to accepting the fact that there existed a gap and a lack of understanding between Koreans and the people of ASEAN; to imagine the rich history rooted in the artefacts, in our own grammar; and to look closely at the smallest clues. There are many mysteries yet to be solved. I look forward to more ideas being exchanged, and more information being collected during and after the exhibition.
I would like to extend my gratitude to all the cooperating institutions, who gladly shared their knowledge and wisdom, and all the creators who took the unfamiliar wedding objects and ceremonies that are showcased in front of us today, and put their own spin on them. So many people pooled their talent and energy into this project from writing a wonderful poem, working at a loom every day for four months, to developing a media program that searches and displays wedding images from the ten countries in real time—true to form of an artist based in an IT powerhouse country; graphic artists interpreting the ten proverbs and phrases related to marriage using their own aesthetic language. With the cooperation of the ASEAN Culture House, my fellow curator, and researchers worked tirelessly and spiritedly to tailor and rediscover the immense amount of information. I truly hope that you can feel the harmony resonating from the beautiful donated artefacts, and to also discover the e ort dispersed around the objects themselves.
