바다, 넓고 깊게 유동하는 海史
‘매핑’mapping 과 ‘네이밍’naming은 과학기술에 기반을 둔 근대적 지식지(智識池)다. 육상과 해양 지리가 그렇게 발달해 왔고, 해상과 해저지리가 또다시 수직적 구도 안에서 재편되어 왔다. 지리로써 구획되고 표상되는 영토화와 탈영토화 사이의 끝없는 길항(拮抗) 과정은 자연과학과 탐사과학에 앞서 우리의 해사, 나아가 문화사 그 자체이다. 따라서 수천 년에 걸친 역사를 통해 이 지난한 과정을 겪어온 우리에게 바다는 그냥 바다가 아니요, 해양과 해양 사이를 구획하고 획정하는 섬 또한 그저 섬일 수만은 없다. 급격한 식민지 근대화와 서구화 과정을 거쳐 국제 보편에 따른 해양 질서를 부여받게 된 오늘날, 우리는 우리 바다에 대해서 얼마나 알고 있을까, 혹은 모르고 있을까?

또한 넓고 깊다. 해양지리를 배우지 않아도, 바다 저 밑 심연까지 닿아 본 적 없어도, 우리 모두 알고 있는 사실이다. 어디서든 몇 시간만 차를 타고 나가면 바다를 보고 들을 수 있는 축복된 땅, 대한민국. 그러나 여전히 많은 이들에게 바다는 일상의 구체적 시공간이기 보다 관념 속에서 상상되고 규정되는 심상지리 imagined geography에 가깝다.
02. 동해는 넓다.
실제로 해양 영토의 규모로 보아 동해는 너른 바다이다. 200Km가 넘는 길고 단정한 해안선을 끼고, 저 멀리 12해리 영해까지 뻗어있는 푸른 바다. 그 안에 인간의 역사를 지켜봐 온 억겁의 시간과 인간 삶의 경계를 멀리 확장시켜온 우주적 운동 에너지가 있다. 따라서 관광과 레저, 어업 자원이라는 말로는 동해의 광대한 에너지를 미처 담아낼 수 없다.
03. 독도는 깊다.
동해의 끝자락, 독도는 지난 한 세기 동안 잦은 부침과 격랑 속에서도 묵묵히 그 자리를 지켜왔다. 자그마한 언덕치로 솟아난 돌 섬. 바다 아래 2000미터가 넘는 깊은 몸체를 담그고, 해저 대지로 굳건한 뿌리를 내리고 있다. 우리가 알아왔던 ‘섬’으로서의 독도는 실로 깊고 거대하다.

마치 바닷속 지형처럼 기울어진 경사면 바닥에 놓인 내용과 그것들의 배치는, 형식적으로는 전시이지만 전시가 아닐 수도 있을 것이다. 왜냐하면 전시는 관람객에게 내용을 ‘보여주는’ 것을 기본형식으로 채택하는 인터페이스인데, 이 전시는 보여주는 것을 목적으로 하지 않는다. 관람객은 이곳에서 동해와 독도에 관한 사소한 내용에서부터 제법 전문적인 지식에 이르는 100가지의 정보를 만나게 된다. 그리고 원하는 방식으로 정보를 채집하고 분류하여 자신만의 해양지리와 지명에 관한 자료집을 편집할 수 있다. 주체적인 지식 탐사와 생산의 과정을 통해 관념적 정보의 파편들이 실천적 지식의 합을 이루도록 전시는 기획되었다.

독도와 동해에 관한 생태지리, 해양정보 외 미시사적 정보를 담은 총 100여종의 그래픽물이 다양한 포멧으로 제작, 관람객이 원하는 방식으로 정보 큐레이션하도록 제안한 전시 Ocean, History of Sea that Flows Wide and Deep
“Mapping” and “naming” are the modern property of scientific and technological knowledge. Geography on land and sea has developed in that way, and geography of sea and undersea has been reorganized again in this vertical composition. Prior to the natural sciences and exploration technology, the endless antagonist process between territorialization and deterritorialization, which represents and compartments under the name of modern geography, is in our maritime and our cultural history, as itself. Therefore, the ocean, which has undergone the process of the past with over thousand years of spanning history, is not only just an ocean to us. And, the island, which defines and compartments between the oceans to ocean, is not only just an island. Today, with the granted order of universally international maritime from undergoing rapid colonial modernization and westernization, to what extent, do we know about our ocean? Or even do not we know?
01. The Ocean is blue.
It is also wide and deep. These are the facts that we all know without having to learn about marine geography and without ever reaching the sea abyss beneath. Korea is a blessing land for having chances to see and listen to the ocean anywhere by driving for only few hours. However, still for many people, the ocean is conceived as an imagined geography that exists as a general idea rather than specific time and space of everyday life.
02. East Sea is Wide.
East Sea, in fact, is a wide ocean in terms of the size of marine territory itself. It is a blue ocean that stretches as far as 12 nautical miles of territorial waters along with more than 200Km of a neat long coastline. There is a universal movement of energy inside that expands far beyond the boundaries of immeasurable time and of human life, with watch of a human history. Thus, there have been limits to depict the vast energy of the East Sea by the practical words of tourism, leisure and fishery resources.
03. Dokdo is Deep.
On the edge of East Sea, there is an island called, Dokdo. Dokdo has been standing against a long-suffering over the past century, despite the frequent rip and fluctuations. The stone island that rises like a small hill has a strong root coming down to the seabed ground. More than 2000m of the stone body immerse under the sea. As an island, Dokdo is indeed profound and enormous.
Now Here,
The details and their arrangements of contents, as if they are placed on an inclined sloped floor like undersea terrain, are seemed as a formal exhibition, but they can be something else. This exhibition does not aim on “showing” the curated contents to the audience. The audience will encounter 100 pieces of information, ranging from minor to quite professional knowledge about the East Sea and Dokdo. And, the information can be collected and classified as preferred to exclusively edit its own data compilation about undersea feature names and marine geography. The exhibition was planned to achieve the summation of practical knowledge with the fragments of ideological information through independent exploration and production of knowledge.
