신윤복의《혜원전신첩》재해석 작품 전시

2023년 6월 15일부터 18일까지 '2022 서울대학교 미술대학 후기 졸업전 석･박사 학위청구전'이 서울대학교 74동 우석갤러리에서 열렸습니다. 저는 2021년 12월부터 박사학위 논문으로 신윤복의《혜원전신첩》을 연구를 시작하여 작품논문을 완성하게 되었습니다. 작품과 논문이 완성되기까지 쉽지 않은 시간이었지만 우리의 풍속화와 조선후기의 시대상과 더불어 신윤복이라는 신비스러운 화가에 대해 연구할 수 있는 값진 시간이 되었습니다.
From June 15th to 18th, 2023, the '2022 Seoul National University College of Fine Arts Graduation Exhibition for Master's and Doctoral Degrees' took place at the Woo Seok Gallery in Building 74 of Seoul National University. I began my research on Shin Yun-bok's "Hyewonjeonshincheop" for my doctoral thesis in December 2021. After a challenging period, I successfully completed my thesis on the artwork, and it wasn't an easy journey to finalize both the artwork and the paper. However, it became a valuable period during which I could delve into the cultural aspects of our society and the historical context of the late Joseon Dynasty, along with the enigmatic painter Shin Yun-bok.

조선후기를 대표하는 풍속화가로 김홍도와 함께 우리에게 친숙한 신윤복은 당대에는 인정받지 못했던 것으로 보입니다. 그의 사후 한 세기가 지난 후에야 일본에서 <단오풍정>의 그네 뛰는 여인의 부분이 스캔되어 담뱃갑 표지로 쓰이는 등 인기를 얻으며 발견되었기 때문이죠. 현재까지 그에 대해 알려진 바로는,
1. 신한평의 아들로 첨절제사를 지낸 화원으로 풍속화를 잘 그렸다.
2. 동가식 서가숙하며 흡사 방외인 같았으며 여항인들과 어울려 다녔다.
3. 비속한 그림을 그려 도화서에서 쫓겨났다.
는 것뿐입니다. 일본의 고화상에 팔려갔던《혜원전신첩》30점은 조선후기를 대표하는 신윤복이라는 화가의 존재를 우리에게 일깨워준 고마운 작품입니다. 이를 기와집 세 채의 값을 치르고 되찾아 온 간송 전형필 선생님의 역할도 큽니다.
Shin Yun-bok, who is familiar to us alongside Kim Hong-do as representatives of the late Joseon period, appears to have not received recognition during his time. It wasn't until more than a century after his passing that certain parts of his work, such as the swinging woman from "Danoe Pungjeong," gained popularity and were discovered in Japan, being used as covers for cigarette cases. Currently, what is known about him includes:
He was the son of Shin Han-pyeong and excelled as a painter, particularly in depicting scenes of daily life, capturing the essence of folk customs and traditions.
He was known for his artistic prowess and social interactions. He often mingled with the common people, resembling an outsider and mingling freely with the lower classes.
He faced controversy due to creating explicit artwork, which led to his expulsion from the royal painting bureau (Dohwaseo).
These are the known details about him. The 30 pieces of "Hyewonjeonshincheop, " which were sold in Japan's art market, serve as a precious reminder of Shin Yun-bok, an artist representative of the late Joseon period. The significant role played by Gan Song Jeon Hyeong-pil, who paid the value of three tile-roofed houses to reclaim these artworks, is also noteworthy.
원작의 작품은 30점으로 구성되어 있지만 조선후기의 수직적 신분제를 현재의 수평적 신분제로 바꾸는 과정에서 수많은 실험과 시행착오를 거쳐 최종 15점으로 엄선하여 선별하였습니다. 재해석 작품의 큰 특징이라 한다면 원작의 원형은 보존하되 시대상과 배경뿐만 아니라 구도, 드로잉, 색채, 표현기법에까지 원작과 전혀 다른 변용을 시도하였습니다. 결론적으로 탐구당의《혜원전신첩》을 모체로 현대적으로 변용된 실크스크린 아티스트북을 제작하였습니다.
The original collection consists of 30 artworks, but during the process of transitioning from the vertical social hierarchy of the late Joseon period to the current horizontal social structure, numerous experiments and trial-and-error led to a final selection of 15 pieces. A significant aspect of reinterpretation lies in preserving the essence of the original while introducing entirely different changes not only in terms of the contemporary context and background but also in composition, drawing, color, and techniques. In conclusion, based on the "Hyewonjeonshincheop" by Tamgudang, a modernized silk screen artist's book has been created through adaptation.
전시를 마치고 약 두 달 후인 지난 화요일(2023/8/29)에는 제77회 후기 서울대학교 학위수여식이 있었습니다. 아침부터 조금씩 내리던 비가 학위수여식을 마칠 때즈음부터 억수같이 쏟아져 빗속의 잊지 못할 졸업식이 되어버렸습니다.
감사하게도 저는 미술대 박사 수석과 동시에 박사 졸업생 전체 대표의 영광을 주시어 단상에서 총장님께 학위기를 받게 되었습니다. 지난 삼 년여간의 시간과 마지막에 논문을 완성하며 하루를 48시간으로 쓰려 애썼던 기억이 인생에서 잊지 못할 시간으로 남았습니다.
지도교수님을 비롯하여 시각디자인 전공 교수님들께 감사드리며, 이 시간들을 기억하며 앞으로도 좋은 작업과 연구를 지속하고 싶다는 다짐을 해봅니다. :)
Two months after the exhibition concluded, on the past Tuesday (2023/8/29), the 77th Commencement was held at Seoul National University. The rain, which had been drizzling lightly since the morning, turned into a heavy downpour right after the degree conferral ceremony began, turning the graduation ceremony into an unforgettable event in the rain.
Fortunately, I had the honor of receiving not only the title of Chief Doctorate of Fine Arts but also the distinction of being the representative of all doctoral graduates. I was presented with my degree by the university president on the stage. The memories of the past three years and the intense effort of making each day feel like 48 hours while completing my thesis remain as unforgettable moments in my life.
I would like to express my gratitude to my advisor and the professors of the Design department for their guidance. Reflecting on these times, I reaffirm my commitment to continue producing excellent work and conducting research in the future. :)
