주유청강 (舟遊淸江) 재해석
한강의 유람선 관광 Han River Cruise Excursion
신윤복, <주유청강>, 조선 후기첫 번째로 소개드릴 작품은 <주유청강>입니다.
원작의 그림은 서울의 강에서 조선시대 세명의 양반들이 기생들과 젓대잡이를 불러 선유놀이를 즐기는 장면입니다. 선유놀이는 당시 배로 물자를 대어 부를 축적한 상인들이 주로 즐겼는데 이 그림에서는 양반들의 선유놀이 장면입니다. 눈에 띄는 것은 흰 띠를 두른 양반들이 상중임에도 불구하고 뱃놀이를 나왔다는 것입니다. 신윤복은 상중임에도 기생과 여가를 즐기러 나온 양반의 모순을 풍자하는 상황을 연출하였습니다.
암벽에 멋지게 쓰여있는 화제에는 "一笛晩風聽不得, 白鷗飛下浪花前 - 젓대소리 늦바람으로 들을 수 없고, 백구만 물결 좇아 날아든다."라고 적혀있습니다. 백구는 갈매기를 뜻하는데 바닷가에서나 있을법한 이 흰새는 그림에서 찾아볼 수 없습니다. 이는 여러 가지 상징성을 가지고 있다 해석되고 있는데 화면 중앙 쪽 물에 손을 담근 여인의 흰 손을 상징한다, 또는 상중인 양반의 본심을 나타낸다는 등의 다양한 해석이 있어 본 작가의 의도가 더욱 궁금해집니다.
The first artwork I would like to introduce is "Juyu Cheonggang." The original painting depicts a scene during the Joseon Dynasty where three noblemen are enjoying a boat outing with courtesans by the river in Seoul, accompanied by a musicians playing instrument. Seonyunori, a type of recreational boating activity, was particularly favored by merchants who transported goods by boat during that era, but in this painting, we see noblemen engaging in seonyunori. What stands out is that despite the noblemen wearing white sashes, they are participating in a boat outing even while in the midst of a funeral procession. Shin Yun-bok orchestrates a situation where noblemen, despite their involvement in a funeral, paradoxically engage in leisure activities with courtesans, satirizing the contradiction of noblemen enjoying the company of courtesans during a funeral procession.
Intriguingly, the wall text elegantly reads, "一笛晩風聽不得, 白鷗飛下浪花前, " which can be translated as, "Unable to hear the evening breeze with a single flute, white gulls fly below the waves." The term "white gulls" symbolizes seagulls, yet these white birds are absent in the painting. This absence holds various interpretations, such as representing the white hand of a woman dipping into the water in the center of the screen, or revealing the true intentions of the nobleman. The symbolism in this artwork leaves us curious about the artist's intentions.

In the original painting, it depicted noblemen enjoying music played by a musician during a boat outing. However, in the reinterpretation of the artwork, it's likely that they have music playing on the pleasure boat or perhaps they are each listening to music with their own airpods, providing a modern twist to the scene.

Bonus Pics - 마지막은 제주 여행사진 투척으로 마무리하겠습니다. 방학의 끝자락에 아주 오랜만에 다녀온 여행에 환상적인 날씨까지 감사한 시간이었습니다. 논문을 쓰는 동안 집중력 향상을 위해 파도소리, 빗소리 등을 틀어놓곤 하였는데 실제 제 귀로 파도소리를 들으니 아주 사운드가 빵빵하여 제대로 된 힐링이 되었습니다. 이번 투어를 기획한 능력자 동생에게 감사하고 벌써 제주 청귤과 자몽의 맛이 그립습니다. :) #jungyeonroh
Lastly, I'll conclude with some photos from my trip to Jeju Island. It was a fantastic journey, and I'm grateful for the wonderful weather we had during the end of the summer break. It had been a long time since I traveled, and I appreciated every moment of it. While working on my thesis, I used to play sounds like ocean waves and rainfall to improve my concentration. Hearing the actual sound of ocean waves during this trip was incredibly refreshing and a true healing experience. I want to express my gratitude to my talented younger sister who planned this tour. Already missing the taste of Jeju's green tangerines and grapefruits. :)
