신윤복, <청금상련>, 조선 후기

세 번째로 소개드릴 작품은 <청금상련>입니다.

"가야금 소리를 들으며 연꽃을 구경하다."라는 뜻의 <청금상련>은 세 명의 양반과 기생이 등장합니다. 정장을 차려입은 남자들 중 가운데 남자의 호박으로 된 갓끈과 자주색 도포띠로 보아 당상관 이상의 관료들입니다. 맨 왼쪽에 집주인으로 보이는 남자는 사방관까지 벗어놓고 기생을 끌어안고 있습니다. 이를 보고 있는 가운데 양반은 부러워서 쳐다보는 것인지, 쯧쯧 안타까워하는 것인지 모를 표정으로 바라보고 있습니다. 그의 파트너로 보이는 오른쪽에 앉아있는 의녀기생은 곰방대만 피워대고 있네요. 앞쪽 가야금을 뜯는 기생과 양반은 화로를 피워놓고 풍류를 즐기고 있습니다.

어느 댁의 안뜰로 보이는 이곳은 앞쪽의 연못과 돌담과 기와, 소나무등으로 보아 참으로 부유한 저택 같습니다. 집에서 저렇게 놀 수 없다면 아마도 기방의 후원일 것입니다. 연꽃은 진흙 속에서도 아름답게 피어나기 때문에 기생을 상징한다고 합니다. 그래서 연꽃을 꺾는다 라는 의미는 기생과의 동침을 상징한다고 하는데요... 앞의 연꽃이 그러한 상징과 연관성이 있는 것일까요?

그림 위쪽에는 좌 상객상만(座上客常滿), 주중 주불 공(酒中酒不空)이라는 글귀가 적혀 있는데 이는 "자리에는 손님이 항상 가득 차고, 술통에 술이 비지 않는다./여인의 아름다움에 취한다."라는 뜻으로 다양하게 해석되고 있습니다.

The third work I would like to introduce is "Chunggeumsangryun."

Meaning "admiring lotus flowers while listening to the sound of Gayageum, " features three noblemen and three courtesans. Among the men dressed in formal attire, the central figure is identified as a high-ranking official, with his hat adorned with a amber strap and a purple sash, indicating his status beyond that of a common official. The man on the far left, who appears to be the host, is embracing a courtesan while all around look on. The expressions of the noblemen in the center who observe this scene can be interpreted as either envy or sympathy. The courtesan seated to the right of what seems to be his partner is smoking a long pipe. In the foreground, a courtesan plays the Gayageum, and the nobleman enjoy the entertainment by a stove.

This place, which appears to be a courtyard of a certain residence, with a pond in the foreground, a stone wall, tiled roof, and pine trees, is indeed a luxurious mansion. If one cannot enjoy such leisure at home, it is likely to be the back garden of a guesthouse. Since lotus flowers bloom beautifully in the mud, they are considered a symbol of courtesans. Therefore, the act of plucking lotus flowers is said to symbolize intimacy with a courtesan. Is there any significance in the lotus flowers depicted in the foreground of the painting in relation to this symbolism?

Above the painting, there is an inscription that reads "座上客常滿, 酒中酒不空, " which can be interpreted in various ways, including "The seats are always filled with guests, and the drinks never run dry. / Intoxicated by the beauty of women."

재해석은 2013년 신문기사에 실렸던 '성접대 별장'을 근거 자료로 삼았습니다. 기사에서는 한 업자가 고위공직자들과 같은 유력인사들에게 성접대를 하기 위해 마련한 지방의 별장에 가보니 수영장, 찜질방까지 갖춰있었으며 이곳에는 외제차와 연예인들이 자주 드나들었다 합니다.

그림에서는 젊은 여인들과 별장안의 수영장에서 유희를 즐기는 현대의 양반이라 할 수 있는 고위공직자들의 모습을 그려보았습니다. 수영장 안에도 연꽃을 그려 넣었습니다.

I used the 'Secret Villa' mentioned in a 2013 newspaper article as a reference material. In the article, it was reported that a local villa was prepared by a businessman for the purpose of entertaining high-ranking officials and influential figures with sexual services. Upon visiting, it was found that the villa had amenities such as a swimming pool and a sauna, and it was frequented by foreign cars and celebrities.

In the painting, I have depicted high-ranking officials who can be considered as modern-day noblemen, enjoying themselves with young women in the villa's swimming pool. I have also included lotus flowers in the pool.
