신윤복, <단오풍정>, 조선 후기

다섯 번째로 소개드릴 작품은 <단오풍정>입니다.

이 작품은 신윤복의 《혜원전신첩》을 대표하는 작품이라 우리나라의 관광 기념품샵이나 인사동 등지, 또는 어디선가 본 듯한 느낌으로 친숙하실 것입니다. 노란 저고리에 빨간 치마를 입고 그네를 뛰는 여인의 색채감이 무척 강한 작품인데요, 뒤쪽에 앉은 여인의 파란 치마까지 어우러져 삼원색을 의도적으로 배치한 작가의 감각을 읽을 수 있습니다.

일제강점기에 일본에서 발견된 《혜원전신첩》30점의 작품 중 저 여인의 그네 뛰는 모습이 스캔되어 담뱃갑들의 표지로 쓰였을 만큼 일본에서는 이미 유명했던 작품인데요, 그들의 인쇄술이 굉장히 빨리 발달했었다는 증거이기도 하네요...

작품에서는 꺾어진 골짜기의 개울가에서 여인들이 반라로 멱을 감고 있고 오른쪽 위에는 그네를 뛰거나 머리를 매만지는 여인들을 동자승들이 숨어서 훔쳐보는 장면입니다. 제목이 <단오풍정>이라서 단옷날의 모습을 그렸다는 해석도 있지만 여인들의 행동에서 창포물에 머리를 감는 것이 아니며 여러 가지 정황상 단옷날이 아닌 유월절이라는 일리 있는 해석도 나오고 있습니다. 주인공으로 보이는 그네 뛰는 여인은 새색시도, 단옷날을 위해 차려입은 여인도 아닌 무당이라는 해석 또한 있습니다. 그도 그럴 것이 당시 저렇게 화려한 노랑 빨강 옷을 아무리 특별한 날이라지만 서민이 입을 수는 없었기 때문입니다.

니은자로 크게 굽어진 골짜기는 여성을 상징하고 있음을 은유적으로 알 수 있습니다. 오른쪽 아래에 머리에 술상을 이고 오는 여인은 아들을 낳았는지 가슴을 내놓은 채 음식을 가져오고 있습니다. 왼쪽 아래 개울가에서 몸을 씻는 여인네들 때문에 조선 최초의 누드화라고 불리고 있는 작품입니다. 세미 누드가 맞을 듯하네요. ㅎㅎ

The fifth work I'd like to introduce is "Danohpungjeong."

This work is a representative piece from Shin Yun-bok's "Hye-won jeon-sin-jeop, " and you may find it familiar, as it's often seen in South Korean tourist souvenir shops, Insa-dong, and other places. It features a woman in a yellow jeogori (jacket) and a red skirt, swinging on a swing, with vibrant colors that leave a strong impression. You can appreciate the artist's sense of deliberately arranging the primary colors by observing the blue skirt of the woman sitting in the background.

During the Japanese colonial era, this work was already well-known in Japan, as it was selected to be scanned from the 30 works of "Hye-won jeon-sin-jeop." It was used as a cover image for cigarette cases. This indicates the rapid development of their printing technology at the time.

In the artwork, women are shown washing their face and upper body by the stream in a secluded valley, while monks on the top left are secretly watching those. The title, "Danohpungjeong, " is interpreted to represent traditional Korean holiday of Dano. The woman swinging is also interpreted as not being dressed for Dano but as a shaman. This is reasonable because back then, commoners could not wear such elaborate yellow and red clothing, even on special occasions.

The valley symbolizes the female genitalia. The woman on the lower right, carrying a tray of food on her head, might have given birth to a son, as she's exposing her chest. The women washing their bodies by the stream on the lower left have led to this being known as the first nude painting in the history of Joseon (Korea). It's more accurately described as a semi-nude.

재해석 작품은 서울의 남산타워뷰를 자랑하는 고급호텔의 실외수영장과 자쿠지에서 한가로이 호캉스를 즐기는 현대인들의 풍경으로 바꾸어 보았습니다. 그네를 뛰는 여인은 시선을 사로잡는 비키니를 입은 여인으로 대체해 보았습니다. 앞쪽의 여인들은 래시가드를 입고 수다가 한창이네요. 썬베드 위의 남자들은 여성들에게 시선이 꽂혀 있습니다.

I have reimagined the artwork as a scene of modern individuals enjoying a leisurely vacation at an upscale hotel's outdoor swimming pool and Jacuzzi, boasting a view of Seoul's Namsan Tower. The woman on the swing has been replaced with a bikini-clad lady who captivates onlookers. The women in the foreground are wearing rash guards and engaged in lively conversations. The men on the sunbeds have their attention fixed on the women.

현대 실내사우나를 즐기는 여인들 중간과정 An indoor sauna scene which remained incomplete

왼쪽에 보시는 작품은 초기에 구상했던 실내 목욕탕 씬입니다. 당시 코로나가 해제된 후 실내 목욕탕에서 여성들이 마스크를 벗고 자유롭게 사우나를 즐기는 풍경을 그려보았습니다. 그러나 원작과의 매치를 위해 완성하지 않은 채 실외 풍경으로 재구상하였습니다.

The artwork on the left is originally conceived as an indoor bathhouse scene. I envisioned women enjoying the sauna freely without masks after the lifting of the COVID-19 restrictions. However, I decided to reinterpret it as an outdoor scene to match the original artwork, and it remained unfinished.
