빈민가의 삶을 통한 가난에 관한 이야기

I am trying to describe the people in our quarter, not for the mere curiosity, but because they are all part of the story. Poverty is what I am writing about, and I had my first contract with poverty in this slum. The slum, with its dirt and its queer lives, was first an object-lesson in poverty, and then the background of my own experiences. It is for that reason that I try to give some idea of what life was like there.

내가 우리 동네의 사람들을 그려보려고 하는 이유는 단순한 호기심 때문이 아니라, 그들 모두가 그 이야기의 일부이기 때문이다. "가난"이 내가 쓰고자 하는 이야기이며, 나는 이 빈민가에서 처음으로 가난과 마주했다.더럽고 기이한 삶으로 가득한 이 빈민가는 처음에는 가난에 대해 배우는 한 예시이었으나, 이후에는 내 경험의 근간이 되었다. 그렇기 때문에 나는 이곳에서의 삶이 어떤 것이었는지 조금이나마 전하고자 하는 것이다.
