80년대 이전 세대들이 “조직을 위한 희생”이라는 이타심을 발휘하는 반면 80년대 이후 세대들은 조직을 위해서라 해도 자신들의 이익에 반하는 희생을 거부한다. 이것은 곧 이들이 “이념을 위해 싸우라”는 정치적 선동에 더 이상 이용당하지 않을 세대라는 사실을 의미한다. 모든 전쟁과 권력 투쟁은 고도의 조직력과 질서의 힘을 필요로 하며, 그 기반은 개인의 이타심을 악용하는 것이 본질이다. “무엇인가를 위해서 싸우라”는 기만적인 선동. 그 무엇인가가 과연 지키거나 빼앗을 가치가 있느냐는 의문이 없이도 쉽게 정치적 선동에 휘말리지 않을 세대를 두고 하는 말이다. 그러니까 이 시점에서 제기되는 저 질문이 (사진 참조) 대단히 핵심을 찌르는 질문인데; 물론 전쟁을 일으키는 건 권력자다. 하지만 권력자 혼자만의 힘으로 전쟁을 할 수는 없다.

내 동생들의 세대, 역사상 가장 똑똑하고 가장 가난한 80년대 출생 세대는 전쟁에 필요한 질서에 복종하라는 요구에 쉽게 순응하지 않을 것이다. 이게 바로 70년대 이전의 출생한 내 윗 세대와의 결정적인 차이일 것이다.
