대답하다, 라는 동사인데 reply 와 respond 는 전치사 “to”가 꼭 필요한 단어입니다. 뒤에 사람이 나오던, 어떤 statement가 나오던지요
respond는 좀더 공식적인데 어울려서 회사 환경에서 사용하기 좋고, reply는 좀 캐주얼해서 친구들의 문자 등에 대답할때 사용합니다.
아래 여러가지 예문을 모아 봤습니다.

I responded to her emails. (이럴경우는 her는 친구라면 좀 어색한 상황이고, boss 혹은 client 라면 더 어울림)
I need to respond to my boss by Monday.
I had to respond to some inquiries this morning.
I think our consumers will respond well to our new policy. (사람들의 반응이 좋다)
I hope my mom responds well to the treatment. (약이나 치료제가 잘 받다)

She called and I replied later.
I usually reply to people right away.
I usually reply to people’s calls right away.
Thank you so much for your reply.
Please reply at your earliest convenience.
[answer + (목적어)]
Answer 는 to 가 필요없습니다.
I answered his question.
I answered him.
He did not answer. (전화 상황에서)
Answer the phone. (전화 좀 받아)
Answer the door. (문열어줘)
I replied, “Never!”
