Sunrise => sun rises, sunset => sun sets

Sunset, sunrise, rainfalls, heart-beating, power outage 등은 우리 입에 착 붙어있는 단어들이다. 둘 이상의 명사가 늘 함께 있어서 복합 명사라고도 불린다. 어떤 것은 한단어로 굳어진 것도 있고(Closed compound nouns), 혹은 하이픈으로 연결된 경우도 있고, 아직까지는 명사+명사로 씌여서 스페이스가 있는 경우도 있다.
“What is the sunset time?” 이런 식으로 sunset 을 붙여쓰는 건 쉬운데, “요즘 해가 점점 늦게 지고 있다”를 말하려면 갑자기 어색해진다. Sun과 set을 떼어 놓아야하는데, 그렇게 자주 안써서이다.
“These days, the sun is setting later and later.“ 정도로 할수 있다. The sunset is later. 이라고 하면 어색하다. 해돋이(sunrise)도 마찬가지.
이런 경우는 실제에서 사용할 문장들을 많이 만들어보고 입에 붙게 연습하는 것이 좋았다.
sunrise (the sun rises / is rising)
The sun is rising already. (벌써 해 뜨고 있네)
The sun rises really early in the summer.(여름에는 해가 진짜 일찍 떠)
The sun is just starting to rise.(이제 막 해가 뜨기 시작해)
Let’s go out before the sun rises. (해 뜨기 전에 나가자)
sunset (the sun sets / is setting)
The sun sets really late in the summer. (여름에는 해가 진짜 늦게 져)
Let’s head back before the sun sets. (해 지기 전에 돌아가자)
We stayed out until the sun set. (해 질 때까지 밖에 있었어)
The sun is already setting. (벌써 해 지고 있네)
그래서 오늘도 연습 중...
“Peace Corps volunteers here shouldn’t travel for one hour before the sun rises or after the sun sets.”
(봉사자들은 해 뜨기 전 한 시간과 해 진 후 한 시간 동안 이동하면 안 된다)
“In Montenegro, we’re switching to daylight saving time this Sunday, as the sun is rising earlier and earlier. “
(해가 점점 더 일찍 떠서 몬테네그로에선 이번 주 일요일부터 서머타임으로 바뀝니다.)
