영어발음] #48 인토네이션이 발음만큼 중요합니다
강조 안할 단어를 강조하면 못 알아듣더라구요

안녕하세요,
한국말에서도 그럴텐데요, 내가 생각하는 억양이 있고 그것을 기대하고 듣고 있는데, 영 다른곳을 강조해서 말하면 그 말이 잘 이해가 안되잖아요.
영어를 배우면서, 자음과 모음을 정확하게 발음(phoenix)하는 것도 중요하지만, 영어는 인토네이션이 중요한 언어더라구요. 내가 얘기하는 건 못알아듣고, 옆친구가 반복해서 말하면 알아듣는, 그럴때가 있잖아요. 그 친구나 나나 동일한 것을 말했는데 말이죠.
이런 경우는 대게 미묘한 억양(인토네이션) 때문이라고 생각됩니다. 원어민들이 이럴 것이야, 라고 기대하는 억양이 있거든요. 한단어 안에서의 강세도 중요하고, 한 문장에서 어떤 단어에 강세를 주는냐, 이게 중요합니다. 요즘 저는 인토네이션 관련해서 관심있게 공부하고 있습니다. 강세를 준다고 무조건 세게, 크게 말하는게 아니더라구요. 이 부분은 좀더 자세하게 다음편에서 자세하게 정리하겠습니다.
아래는 제가 어제 쓰기 연습삼아 작문을 해본 것인데요, 맨 마지막 문장을 읽을때 제가 강세 주는 단어가 틀렸더라구요. 그래서 갖고 와봤습니다.
여러분은, 아래 문장에서 어떤 단어에 강세를 주고 말하거나 읽을 것 같으세요?
“Yesterday we were recruiting you, today you’re part of the staff.”
아래는 제가 읽었던 강세 위치입니다.
“YesterDAY we were recruiting YOU, toDAY you’re PART of the staff.”
그리고 아래는 원어민이 읽었을때 강세 위치입니다.
“YESterday we were recRUITing you, toDAY you’re part of the STAff.”
어떤가요? 생각했던 것과 같은가요?

One day, an HR Manager died in an accident. His soul was greeted by God. God told him, “You have a choice before you have to go to either heaven or hell. You will spend one day in hell and one day in heaven. Then, you have to choose where you’d like to go for all eternity.
On the first day, the HR manager was sent to hell. Unlike his expectation, hell had a beautiful golf course and a Michelin three-star restaurant. He had a great time there, eating a steak-and-lobster dinner with a fancy dessert. The following day, the HR manager was sent to heaven. It was almost as enjoyable as his day in hell.
At the end of the second day, God asked him, “Now, it’s time to choose between heaven and hell. Which one do you want to go to?” The HR manager answered, “Well, heaven is certainly lovely, but I actually had a better time in hell. I choose hell”. So, the HR manager was sent back to hell. When the doors to hell opened, he found a desolate wasteland covered by garbage.
He was baffled and said, “The other day I was here, there was a beautiful golf course, and I ate steak and lobster. Now, it’s just a dirty wasteland of garbage.” God looked at the HR manager and said, “Yesterday we were recruiting you, today you’re part of the staff.”
