Make out = understand

들으면 알것 같고, 써먹고도 싶은데, 입에서 잘 안나오네요

안녕하세요.

너무 쉬운 단어로 이루어진 동사구은 막상 써먹으려면 입밖으로 안나옵니다. 요늘 기사를 보다 만난 make out. 이것도 그런 경우인데요. make out 은 understand 의미로 주로 쓰이는데요, 

make out을 활용한 다양한 예문을 보면 아래와 같습니다. 

I couldn't make out what she was saying over the noise of the party.  

파티 소음 때문에 그녀가 무엇을 말하는지 알아듣지 못했다. 

After studying the document carefully, I finally made out the meaning of the complex legal jargon.                  

문서를 주의 깊게 공부한 후, 나는 드디어 복잡한 법률 용어의 의미를 이해했다. 

 The detective tried to make out the suspect's alibi, but it didn't seem credible.                  

형사는 용의자의 알리바이를 알아내려고 했지만, 그것은 신빙성이 없는 것으로 보였다. 

 It was too dark to make out any details of the landscape.                  

경치의 세부 사항을 알아내기에는 너무 어두웠다.    

                

그리고 덧붙여서, make it out to 부정사, 이런 형태로도 쓰이네요.

I couldn't believe the handwriting was so messy, but I eventually made it out to be his name.
