시인이 되어볼래?

시인은 글을 참 잘쓰는 사람들인 것 같다. 긴 문장을 몇 마디로 줄여서 표현해도 그 맛깔스러움에 감탄을 할 때가 많다.
이것은 소리없는 아우성...
나 보기가 역겨워 가실 때에는 말없이 고이 보내드리오리다...
기다림은 만남을 목적으로 하지 않아도 좋다...
갑자기 왜 시인 얘기냐고? 시인은, 적어도 내가 알기에 시인은 한 단어를 고르기 위해 수많은 노력과 고민을 쏟아붓는다고 들었거든. 애써 지은 문장을 처음부터 다시 쓰기도 한다고 하고, 한번에 끝까지 쉬지않고 완성한다고도 하고. 건축가의 고뇌와 비슷하지. 이 벽체가 제 역할을 하나? 바닥과 천장이 제대로 함께 어울리나? 창문을 왼쪽으로 10센치만 이동할까?
시인은 글자라는 기호로, 건축가는 도면이라는 기호로 소통한다. 시인은 언어를 낭비하지 않는다. 건축가는 공간을 함부로 다루지 않는다. 시인은 시를 완성해서 사람들을 감동시킬 수 있어야 하고 건축가는 사람들의 삶에 희망을 덮어줘야 한다. 하나에 하나만 대응하는 단순함이 다발로 모여있는 것 보다는, 어느 하나가 수없이 복잡하고 중복된 이야기들을 보자기 쌓듯 아우를 수 있도록. 이걸 한마디로 '함축적이다'라고 얘기한다는 말이지. 시의 핵심은 함축적 언어유희이고, 건축의 핵심은 함축적 공간조성이다. 그 안에서 사람들이 각자 원하는 대로의 감성을 잘 간직할 수 있도록.
시인은 글자에 영혼을 불어 넣고, 건축가는 공간에 생명을 지핀다. 함축적인 감성 없는 글자와 여백없는 골조는 시도 건축도 아니고 그냥 '아무거나'이다.
미국에서 학교다닐때 딱 한번 들어본 적이 있었다.

내가 매일 듣고 싶은 말이다.
It seems to me that poets are truly gifted writers. Even when they condense long sentences into just a few words, I often find myself marveling at their impactful artistry.
"This is a silent outcry..."
"When you leave, weary of me, I shall gently let you go without a word..."
"Waiting need not have meeting as its goal..."
You might wonder why I'm suddenly talking about poets. It's because I've heard that poets, at least as far as I know, pour immense effort and deliberation into choosing just a single word. They say they might rewrite painstakingly crafted sentences from the very beginning, or sometimes finish a piece in a single, uninterrupted effort.
Isn't it similar to an architect's deliberation? "Does this wall serve its purpose? Do the floor and ceiling truly harmonize? Should I move the window just 10 centimeters to the left?"
Poets communicate through the symbols of words; architects, through the symbols of drawings. Poets do not waste language. Architects handle space with great care. Poets need to move people with their finished work, while architects ought to bring hope into people's lives. It's not about assembling a bundle of simple, one-to-one connections. Instead, a single element should be able to encompass countless complex, overlapping narratives, much like a cloth wrapping many items together.
This, in a word, is what we call being 'richly suggestive' or 'full of implication'. The heart of poetry lies in richly suggestive language, and the heart of architecture, in richly suggestive spatial composition. The goal is to allow people, within these creations, to hold onto the emotions they desire, each in their own way.
Poets breathe soul into words, and architects kindle life into space. Words lacking that suggestive quality, and structures without breathing room, are neither poetry nor architecture—they're just 'things'.
While studying in the US, I heard it just once:
"Your works are so poetic."
Those are words I long to hear every day.
