나는 길 위에서 만나는 사람들에게 불쑥 얘기를 청한다. 알지 못하는 사람들에게 자신의 내밀한 얘기를 하기 위해서는 상호 이해가 필요하다. 즉 그가 내가 누구인지에 대한 이해가 필요하고 신뢰할 만한 사람이라는 것을 입증할 필요가 있다. 그것을 입증하는 가장 좋은 방법은 몇 개월 이상 같이 교류하면서 자연스럽게 상호 알아가는 것이 중요하겠지만 여행자인 나의 상황은 그것이 불가능하다. 때로는 한두 시간 안에 떠나야 하는 경우도 즐비하기 때문이다. 그런 경우를 위해 가장 짧은 시간 내에 나를 소개할 필요를 느꼈다. 아래는 그런 필요에 의해 작성된 우리 부부의 소개서이다.

-나(Ansoo Ray Lee)는 내 젊은 시절 커리어의 대부분을 한국의 여러 언론 매체에 근무해오면서 기사를 써왔다. 지금은 프리랜스 저널리스트이자 에세이스트로 활동하고 있다.
-내 인생의 중반기에 나는 다른 경험에 대한 갈망으로 한국의 개성적인 예술 커뮤니티를 만드는 일에 참여했다. 그 이름은 지금의 ‘헤이리예술마을(Heyri Art Valley)’이다. 나는 글 쓰는 일을 계속하면서 각기 다른 예술가들이 모여 함께 일구는 공동체인 이 신생 예술 커뮤니티에서의 생활을 사랑했고 이 커뮤니티의 촌장을 지냈다.
-나는 이 커뮤니티에 ‘모티프원(motif#1)’이라는 아티스트 레지던스이자 게스트하우스를 설립하고 지난 18년간, 세계 90여 개국에서 온 예술가들과 여행자들을 맞으며 함께 삶을 나누고 창의적이면서 충만한 삶을 일구는 여러 생각들을 숙고해왔다. 그것들을 글로 써서 원하는 모두와 나누었다.
-나와 우리 식구들의 경제적인 부분에 헌신해온 나의 아내(Minji Monica Kang)가 정년을 맞아 은퇴하는 것을 보고 나는 그동안 묻어두었던 나의 가장 오래된 소원을 꺼냈다. 그것은 세계 각국 삶의 현장으로 찾아가 그곳의 삶에 참여해 보는 것이었다.
-나는 아내와의 협의를 통해 함께 세계를 유랑하는 그 삶을 더 늦기 전에 실현해 보는 것에 합의했다.
-나는 내 사업체인 모티프원을 대신 운영해 줄 수 있는 파트너로 배우로 활동하고 있는 나의 첫째 딸(이나리)을 지목했다. 그는 기꺼이 배우와 모티프원의 호스트 역할을 병행하는 도전을 받아들였다.
-나와 아내는 일단 10년간의 해외 생활을 예정하고 아내는 2023년 3월 15일 한국을 떠나 영국으로 갔다. 나는 한국의 나머지 일들을 서둘러 정리하고 5월 10일 한국을 떠나 영국의 아내에게 합류했다.
-우리는 지금까지 영국, 아일랜드, 아이슬란드, 미국을 여행했고 지금은 멕시코를 여행 중이다.
-원래의 계획대로 우리는 이 생활을 10년간 지속할 예정이다. 그러니까 10년간 세계 일주를 하면서 한국 밖의 다양한 문화를 체험할 예정이다.
-나는 다른 문화권의 모든 다른 문화의 차이에 큰 흥미를 가지고 있다. 특히 그 문화들이 어떻게 그렇게 되었으며 그 다른 문화들이 상호 다른 문화권에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지에 대해 관심이 많다.
-나는 역사에도 대단히 관심이 많다. 과거는 오늘의 뿌리이기 때문에 오늘의 삶을 어떻게 하면 더 잘 살 수 있는가에 대해 탐구하려면 과거의 총체적인 결과인 오늘의 뿌리가 되는 역사에 대해 관심을 두지 않을 수 없다.
-나는 사람에 관심이 많다. 사람은 동물군의 일원이고 사람과 상호 연결된 다른 동물, 식물 등에 관심을 두지 않을 수 없다. 그렇게 확장하다 보니 모든 자연계, 생태계에 관심을 두지 않을 수 없다. 우리는 홀로 존재할 수 없으며 상호 연결된 존재이기 때문이다. 그러므로 다른 종의 생태 습성과 행동 패턴도 궁금하다.
-나는 각 나라의 복지에 대해서도 관심이 많다. 극심한 빈부의 차이가 발생하는 것이 현실이고 부자는 어떤 마인드를 가졌는지, 가난한 자는 어떤 마인드를 가졌는지에 대한 관심뿐만 아니라 결국 그 간격을 줄일 수 있고 가장 가난한 자도 최소한의 삶의 질을 누릴 수 있으려면 정책이 어떻게 기여할 수 있을지에 대한 것이 나의 관심사이다.
-나는 정신과 영혼, 마음의 평정에 관심이 많다. 물리적인 조건이 아무리 좋아도 결국 사람의 행복은 정신적 만족이기 때문이다.
-나는 은퇴자들의 삶에도 관심이 있다. 그들의 재정적 상태에 따라 어떤 선택이 가능한지, 많아진 여유로운 시간을 어떻게 활용하고 있는지, 그리고 삶의 가치실현인 보람은 어떻게 추구하고 있는지 등이다.
-언어적 스킬의 향상에 관심이 많다. 다양한 언어권의 사람들을 만나 그들의 속마음을 이해하려면 결국 그들의 모국어에 대한 이해가 없이는 불가능하기 때문이다.
-나는 이 모든 경험을 글로 쓰고 있다. 만나는 사람을 인터뷰하고 우리 부부를 포함한 모든 사람들에게 유익할 그들의 경험과 생각과 태도를 글로 써서 독자들과 나누고 있다.
-이 경험들을 글과 사진으로 독자들과 나누고 있기 때문에 글쓰기와 사진 찍기에도 관심이 많다. 가장 효율적이고 창의적인 글쓰기와 사진 찍기에 대한 관심이다.
-나는 이 글들의 일부를 책으로 엮을 예정이며 한국의 매체에 기고하고 있다.

About Ansoo Ray Lee & Minji Monica Kang
-I (Ansoo Ray Lee) have been working and writing articles for various media outlets in Korea for most of my young career. To this day, I continue to be a freelance journalist and essayist.
-In the middle of my life, I participated in creating a unique art community in Korea with a desire for other experiences. Its name is now "Heyri Art Valley." While continuing to write, I loved living in this new art community, a community where different artists came together and worked together, and I served as the village chief of this community for six years.
-I founded "motif#1", an artist's residence and guesthouse in this community, and over the past 18 years, I have welcomed artists and travelers from over 90 countries around the world, sharing my lives together and building a creative and fulfilling life. I wrote them down and shared them with everyone who wanted to.
-Seeing that my wife (Minji Monica Kang), who has devoted herself to the financial affairs of me and our family, is retiring at her retirement age, I brought up my oldest wish that I had buried for a long time. It was about going to places of life around the world and participating in the lives there.
-Through consultation with my wife, I agreed to try to realize that life of wandering the world before it is too late.
-I nominated my eldest daughter (Nari Lee), who is an actor, as a partner who could run my business, motif#1, on my behalf. He willingly accepted the challenge of serving as both an actor and host of motif#1 .
-My wife and I planned to live abroad for 10 years, and she left Korea for the UK on March 15, 2023. I rushed to organize the rest of my affairs in Korea and left Korea on May 10th to join my wife in England.
-So far we have traveled to the UK, Ireland, Iceland, the US, and are currently traveling to Mexico.
- As originally planned, we will continue this life for 10 years. So, we will travel around the world for 10 years to experience various cultures outside of Korea.
-I am very interested in all the differences between different cultures. In particular, I am very interested in how those cultures became that way and what influence those other cultures had on each other.
-I am also very interested in history. Since the past is the root of today, if we want to explore how to live a better life today, we cannot help but pay attention to history, which is the root of today, which is the overall result of the past.
-I am very interested in people. Humans are members of the fauna and cannot help but be interested in other animals, plants, etc. that are interconnected with humans. As we expand like that, we cannot help but pay attentionto all natural and ecological systems. This is because we cannot exist alone and are interconnected beings. Therefore, I am also curious about the ecological habits and behavioral patterns of other species.
-I am also very interested in the welfare of each country. It is a reality that there is an extreme gap between the rich and the poor, and my concern is not only about what kind of mindset the rich have, but also about how policies can contribute in order to eventually reduce the gap and even the poorest can enjoy a minimum quality of life.
-I am very interested in mental, soul, and peace of mind. No matter how good the physical conditions are, ultimately a person's happiness comes from mental satisfaction.
-I am also interested in the lives of retirees. What choices are possible depending on their financial status, how they utilize their extra free time, and how they pursue rewards.
-I am interested in improving my linguistic skills. This is because meeting people from different languages and understanding their inner thoughts is ultimately impossible without understanding their native language.
-I am writing about all these experiences. I interview people I meet and share with my readers their experiences, thoughts, and attitudes that will be beneficial to everyone.
-I am interested in writing and photography because I share these experiences with readers through writing and photos. I am also interested in the most efficient and creative writing and photography.
- I will publish these articles as books and I am contributing to Korean media.
