He didn't recommend to avoid presbyopia.
I decided to attend the class joyfully(even the hardest subject I've been ever).
“Why do ophthalmologists wear glasses even though they perform laser surgery to improve patients’ visual acuity?”
It was a sharp question.
The professor answered:
“When I became an ophthalmologist, I had already passed the golden time to correct my vision. After 40, the lens becomes thicker due to aging. Even after laser surgery, people still need glasses to adjust for presbyopia.”
I asked him,
“Actually, I’m forty, but I had LASIK surgery in Korea before coming here. The doctor who performed my surgery warned me that I would need glasses for presbyopia, but I want to study without glasses or soft lenses. Is there any way to delay presbyopia?”
He was surprised by my age and offered some encouragement.
“You’ve chosen the journey to become a doctor. Eventually, the time will come when you’ll need glasses to see small details. We use screens and phones so much these days—there are many environmental factors that aren’t good for our eyes. But enjoy your time without glasses while you can.”
Then he added, “You mentioned that you’re a yoga teacher. What’s the best time to practice yoga—morning or night?”
I answered,
“It depends on the conditions, but morning yoga is better for awakening energy.”
He recommended a book to us, The 5 AM Club.
“You know, she (me) recommends doing yoga early in the morning. I highly recommend this book and lifestyle. This habit changed my life. If you wake up at 5 AM and start your school or work at 9 AM, you get more than three extra hours to dedicate to yourself. And by waking up early, you naturally sleep early, leading to a healthier lifestyle. Take this ‘gift time’ and use it wisely—it will be good for you. You can achieve anything you want, even winning battles against your enemies.”
After school, I practiced yoga at home and reflected on today’s lesson.
I don’t have any enemies to fight, but I’ll take the professor’s recommendation and claim my own gift time at 5 AM.
