노을이 세상을 온통 붉게 물들 때쯤, 지속해서 부는 바람 소리를 등지고, 나는 무거워진 몸을 이끌고 방으로 들어왔다. 침대에 털썩 누워, 오늘 기록한 그리움을 다시 들추어 본다. 마음은 회한으로 무겁게 가라앉았지만 어쩌지 못하는 작금의 상황을 받아들여야 하지 않겠는가. 다른 도리가 없어 보였다.
얼마 전 나는 알츠하이머 진단을 받았다. 의사는 확진까지는 좀 더 두고 봐야 한다지만, 나는 이미 느끼고 있었다. 삶의 무수한 자국이 내 머릿속 어딘가에 처박혀 있다가 그냥 술술 사라지고 있다는 것을. 그리고 해가 갈수록, 또렷한 듯 보이는 것들도, 어느 추리 소설처럼, 내 머릿속 뇌가 꾸미고 부풀리고 왜곡하여 만든 가상세계로 치장된 모습들도, 급속히 나를 떠나고 있다는 것을.
하지만 나는 안다. 내가 그리워하는 그녀의 모습을 나는 단 하나의 느낌으로만 간직하고 있다는 사실을. 나는 이제 그녀의 눈, 코, 입, 얼굴형, 뒷모습 등을 정말이지 아무것도 또렷이 기억하지 못하고 있다. 그냥 느낌만이 가득하다.
어렵게 대학생이 된 그해, 유난히 따뜻했던 봄날, 나는 새로 사귄 친구들과 캠퍼스를 신나게 활보하고 있었다. 세상을 다 가진 듯 행복했던 날들. 교정에 소풍 나온 한 무리의 유치원생들이 짝꿍과 다정하게 손을 잡고 재잘거리며 지나가고 있었다. 그런데 한 어린이가 그만 발을 헛디뎌 넘어졌다. 곧이어 터진 울음. 그때 한 학생이 잽싸게 달려와 그 어린이를 안았다. 그녀는 바지와 손에 묻은 먼지를 털어주고 환한 미소로 어린이를 달랬다. 그녀를 처음 본 순간이었다.
