The poor thieves and outcasts who are imprisoned here with me are in many respects more fortunate than I am. For I have come, not from obscurity into the momentary notoriety of crime, but from a sort of eternity of fame to a sort of eternity of infamy, and sometimes seem to myself to have shown, if indeed it required showing, that between the famous and the infamous there is but one step.

나와 함께 여기에 수감된 불쌍한 도둑이나 부랑자들은 여러 가지 면에서 나보다 운이 좋은 사람들이다. 왜냐하면 나는 무명의 존재였다가 범죄를 저질러 일시적인 악명을 얻은 게 아니라, 영원할 것 같은 명성을 누리다가 영원한 불명예를 얻었기 때문이다. 때로는 그들은 내게 명성과 악명은 단 한 걸음 차이라는 것을 보여주었다는(그런 걸 꼭 보여줄 필요가 있는지 모르겠지만)생각이 든다.
