A work of art is useless as a flower is useless. A flower blossoms for its own joy. We gain a moment of joy by looking at it. All art is at once surface and symbol. Those who go beneath the surface do so at their peril. Those who read the symbol do so at their peril.
꽃이 쓸모없는 것처럼 예술 작품은 무용하다. 꽃은 스스로의 즐거움을 위해 피어난다. 우린 꽃을 바라봄으로써 한순간 기쁨을 얻는다. 모든 예술은 표면인 동시에 상징이다. 표면 아래로 향하는 사람들은 위험을 무릅쓰고 그렇게 한다. 상징을 읽는 사람들은 위험을 무릅쓰고 그렇게 한다.
