The one thing that the public dislike is novelty. Any attempt to extend the subject-matter of art is extremely distasteful to the public; and yet the vitality and progress of art depend in a large measure on the continual extension of subject-matter. The public dislike novelty because they are afraid of it.

대중이 아주 싫어하는 것 중의 하나는 새로움이다. 예술의 주제를 확장하고자 하는 어떤 시도에도 대중은 극도의 반감을 보인다. 그런데도 예술의 생명력과 발전은 상당 부분 끊임 없는 주제의 확장에 달려 있다. 대중이 새로움을 싫어하는 이유는 그것이 두렵기 때문이다.
