Life is not governed by will or intention. But a chance tone of colour in a room or a morning sky, a particular perfume that you had once loved and that brings subtle memories with it, a line from a forgotten poem that you had come across again. It is on things like these that our lives depend. There are moments when the odour of lilacs blanc passes suddenly across me, and I have to live the strangest month of my life over again.

삶을 지배하는 것은 우리의 의지나 의도가 아니다. 하지만 어떤 방이나 아침 하늘에서 우연히 본 어떤 색조, 당신이 한때 사랑했고 그 향기가 은밀한 기억들을 떠올리는 향수, 잊고 있다가 다시 마주친 시의 한 구절. 우리의 삶은 바로 이런 것들에의해 좌우되는 것이다. 하얀 라일락꽃 향기와 문득 마주치는 순간이 있는데 그럴 때마다 난 내 인생에서 가장 기이했던 한 시절을 다시 한번 살아야 한다.
