" 라우센 농장에 있는 예쁜 아기 오리 보러 갈래?

철새들은 보우를 보기 위해서 갖가지 새로운 벌레들을 잡아다 주고

보우의 신비로운 깃털을 감상하고 갈 정도였으니까요.

어디서든 보우는 '예쁜 아기 오리'라는 이름으로 통했답니다.

"엄마, 내가 그렇게 예뻐요?"

보우는 물웅덩이에 비친 자신의 모습을 이리보고 저리보면서 엄마에게 물었어요.

"보우도 예쁘지. 우리 아가들은 모두 예쁘단다."

엄마 오리는 보우가 자신이 예쁘다는 걸 차라리 모르길 바랐어요.

보우가 우쭐해지거나 주변을 돌아보지 않을까봐 걱정이 되었죠.

보우는 엄마의 염려대로 식사시간이 되도 이미 많이 먹어 배가 부르지 않았고,

먹이 잡는 걸 배우는 시간에도 먹이를 잡을 생각이 없었어요.

오히려 그 시간에 털 고르는 그루밍을 하며 더 예뻐 보여서 맛있는 걸 얻어먹을 생각이 컸어요.

"너는 정말 특별하구나."라는 말을 듣는 날에는 어느 날보다 가슴과 엉덩이에 힘이 잔뜩 들어갔어요.

하지만 다들 바빠 보여 보우에게 관심이 없는 날이면 보우의 시간은 더디게 흘러갔고,

괜히 마당에서 누군가를 마주칠까 서성 거리기도 했어요.
