그때 엄마, 아빠 오리가 나타나 온 힘을 다해 부리로 왜가리의 날개와 발목을 쪼으며 왜가리를 쫓아냈어요.

첫 여행을 떠나는 아기 오리들이 걱정돼서 엄마, 아빠가 뒤를 천천히 따라오다가

위험에 빠진 아기 오리들을 구해 준거예요.

"엄마, 아빠!"

아기 오리들은 눈물을 철철 흘리며, 엄마, 아빠 품에 안겼어요.

하지만 보우는 여전히 눈을 뜨지 못한 채 벌벌 떨고 있었어요.

눈물도 나오지 않았죠.

'특별한 건 언제나 맛있단 말이지'

왜가리가 했던 말만 계속 머릿속을 맴돌았어요.

그날 이후 예쁜 아기오리 보우는 조금 달라졌어요. 아니 많이요.

신비스러운 빛깔의 털이 미워하기 시작했어요.

'내가 특별하게 태어나지 않았다면, 덜 위험할 텐데. 나는 너무 눈에 잘 띄어.'

이웃들의 칭찬도 더 이상 듣고 싶지 않았어요.

'저 중에서 날 해칠 동물이 있을지 몰라.'

멀리서 찾아오는 보우 관람단들도 반갑지 않아 졌어요.

보우는 자기의 털을 감추기 위해 매일 온몸에 진흙을 묻히고

매력적이었던 목소리도 잘 내지 않게 되었어요.

밤에도 진흙이 묻힌 채로 잠이 들었어요.
