International Youth Initiative Program

오늘 아침 모임은 야외에서 시작했다. 자연에 서면 무엇을 내가 또렷하게 볼 수 있는가. 어떤 향기를 맡으며 향유할 수 있는가. 어떤 것을 더 섬세하게 피부로 느낄 수 있는가. 몸과 마음으로 형형하게 느낄 수 있게 된다. 이 세상의 자연은 모든 것이다. 자연, 바깥이 주는 다양성으로 인해서 나는 야외를 좋아한다. 물론, 집 안이 주는 안락함을 사랑할 때도 있다. 우리는 바깥에서 수업을 시작하기로 했다. 오늘도 우리는 걷기를 해야 한다. 선생님은 우리가 학교 근처의 발도르프 학교를 방문한다고 했다. 이 발도르프 학교는 스웨덴의 깊은 숲속에 위치해 있다.

내 생각에 나는 아주 조용하고, 차분하고, 세심한 집순이같다. 내가 무생물이었다면 곰팡이에 가까웠을 것이다. 컴컴하고 아주 조용하고 먹먹한 어둠을 찾아 헤매는 곰팡이. 나는 집 안에서 책과 종이 그리고 펜과 함께지낸다면 평생을 행복하게 보낼 수 있다. 내가 삶에서 자연으로 나오게 된 모든 계기는 내 주변 환경과 주변 사람들 덕분이다. 내 곁의 학교와 내 곁의 친구들이 아니었더라면 나는 절대 밖으로 나오지 않았을 것이다. 자연의 아름다움을 알아차릴 수 있었던 것은 모두 내 곁의 사람들에 의해서이다. 내 앞에 소중한 moira, rosie, atlas가 걸어가고 있다. 나는 오늘 naoko와 함께 걸었다.

들판의 소들은 고개를 숙여서 아침 식사를 느긋하게 음미하고 있다.

나무들은 곧게 뻗어서 하늘을 보고 있다. 스웨덴의 숲은 연한 녹색과 갈색의 빛깔이다.

우리는 계속해서 깊은 산속으로 들어갔다.

학교가 이런 깊은 곳에 있다니 놀라웠다.

우리는 드디어 학교에 도착했다. 학교는 "하울의 움직이는 성"에 나오는 성을 닮아 있었다. 멀리서부터 아이들의 웃음소리가 들렸다. 아이들이 학교 운동장에서 놀고 있었다. 우리는 교장 선생님들의 말씀을 들었다. 교장 선생님은 관록이 높고, 인자하신 우리 할아버지 느낌이 든다.

앞으로 늙는다는 것을 어떻게 상상하면서 지낼까. 늙는다는 것은 잘 느껴지지 않는다. 아주 가끔 신체의 제기능 부재로 느껴지곤 하지만, 그것도 퍽 와닿지는 않는다. 나이가 들면서 분명해지는 것은 중요한 것과 중요하지 않는 것이다. 나의 독립을 위하는 것은 내게 아주 중요하다. 그리고, 더 큰 내가 더 어린 나에게 나를 확장/발전하는 것이 가능하다고 계속해서 용기를 불어주는 것도 아주 중요하다. 다른 사람을 도울 수 있고, 다른 사람을 행복하게 하는 것도 내게 아주 중요하다. 이 학교에서는 반복해서 자연에 대해 이바지하는 것이 중요하다는 점을 배운다. 나는 내가 굳지 않고, 나이가 들수록 고집만 세지지 않길 바란다. 그래서, 발전하도록 노력하는 것을 멈출 수 없다. 내 생각이 있는 것처럼 다른 사람도 생각이 있다는 것을 배우는 것. 세상에는 다양한 삶이 있다는 것을 알아차리는 것. 그래서, 성숙한 사람이 되고자 한다. 나아가고자 한다.

점심을 먹은 후에 선생님께서 인턴십에 대해서 설명해 주었다. 우리는 개인의 취향에 따라서 인도 또는 네팔에 가게 된다. 그룹으로 모여서 3명 이상이 한 장소에 가게 된다. 그리고, 인턴쉽 장소를 우리는 다음주 정도까지 선택해야만 한다.

무수한 선택이 우리를 기다리고 있었다. 나는 muniseva를 듣자마자 가고 싶다는 생각이 들었다. 그곳에는 학교가 있고, 학생들을 볼 수 있으며, 병원, 여성을 위한 단체가 있다고 했다.

아래에는 인터쉽 장소이다. 인도는 정말 광대한 나라라는 생각이 든다. 한국과 면적을 비교했을 때, 정말 무시무시하게 크다.

네팔의 인턴쉽은 가족같은 분위기를 가진 커뮤니티였다.

shikshantar는 많은 친구들이 관심을 보인 인턴십 장소이다.

bhaikaka는 아주 큰 농장을 가진 인턴십 장소였다. 유기농업과 자연에 관심이 많은 친구들이 이곳을 선택할 것 같다.

다음으로는 muniseva였다. 이곳은 학교, 기술학교, 정신장애 여성을 위한 장소가 있는 곳이다. 아주 큰 공동체로 인도의 vovadara란 장소에 있다. 우리가 방문하는 기간은 아주 무더운 여름날이다.

puvidham은 가족같은 공동체로 소규모로 진행되는 학교이다.

sadhana는 조금 더 규묘가 있는 공동체이며, 공동체에 대한 규칙이 있었다.

satya 학교도 나에게는 좋은 기회라고 느꼈다.

navdanya는 모두가 함께 방문하지만, 그대로 인턴십을 이곳에서 진행해도 된다. 만약 이곳을 선택하게 된다면, 반다나 시바와 더 많은 시간을 보내게 될 것이다.

다음은 인턴십 예산과 관련한 선생님의 말씀이다. 중요하다고 생각하여, 말씀하신 그대로 메모해두었다.

so were trying to make this budget and will allocate this budget according to the needs of each group. does that make sense? what happens with the money that isnt being used? if the money isnt being used it goes into the diversity fund. any questions? yeah! so the diversity fund is a plan that, i think we have three alumni donors helping with, to make it possible for people who don’t have the financial means to still come. so it’s kind of like a scholarship.

and just to be transparent, we dont know exactly what the travel costs will be. it will depend on each group and how they decide to travel. do we want to fly to the internship place? do we want to take the train? depending on that, the cost will differ. so theres a question mark. it’s not set in stone what the costs involved will be.

because of that, our encouragement is that you still try to fundraise. we think fundraising is a really great skill to have. its a great way to start collaborating together and to organize events together. it’s also a really good way of connecting with the local community here, getting to know spaces you can use, getting to know people who you might contact for sound systems or other things, and also a way to give something back.

we also think its a great way for you to become more solid in your intentions around the internship. because you really have to share with people why its important for you to go on the internship and what impact youre hoping to have. so its good practice in becoming clear about that and communicating it with people outside the program.

so we encourage you to try fundraising. hopefully well also have time for a small exercise to gather some of your ideas. one thing i wanted to mention is that in previous years people created gofundme pages and asked family and friends to donate. our encouragement this year is not to do that. we want you to try doing in person fundraising instead.

one reason is that there are fewer skills involved in simply asking for money online and having it donated into a gofundme page. another reason is that there have been uncomfortable situations in the past where some peoples families were able to support more than others, and that created an awkward dynamic.

so we would really encourage you to have fun organizing some in-person events to fundraise. does that make sense to everyone?

i think once you form your internship groups well also show you how to do the budgeting. usually each group makes a rough calculation of what they think the costs will be and then comes up with a number based on that.

with fundraising, you could also be transparent from the beginning and say that if the money is not needed for the internships, you will donate it to the diversity fund, if that’s something the group would like to do.

its also nice to keep in mind that this year you actually already have a budget that may cover a lot of the costs, although were not completely sure yet. but in past years there have always been fundraising events, and many of them have also contributed to the diversity fund.

so its nice not only to fundraise to cover your own internship costs, but also to think about the future, maybe as a group youre helping one person who otherwise couldnt afford to go. i think that’s a really great initiative.

this will also be something you discuss within your group. whether you want extra funds to go to the diversity fund or maybe to the initiative or organization where youll be doing your internship. most of the internship places have already agreed beforehand on accommodation and food costs, and most of them are set per person. but it can vary a little. so does each internship group do its own fundraising project?

not necessarily. thats also up to you, but i would encourage it to be a collective effort. you could fundraise together and then see which internship groups might need extra funds. so now we have a bit of time. we’d like you to take about 10 minutes in small groups and brainstorm some ideas. maybe how you would like to engage people or what kinds of fundraising events you could do. later well share in the big group and see what ideas come up. we’ll be walking around if you need help, r u ready?

학교의 규정에 따라서 우리가 사용하지 않은 돈은 "diversity fund"로 가게 된다. 이것은 yip를 졸업한 세 명의 졸업생 기부자들에 의한 것이며, 재정적인 여유가 없는 사람들이 참여할 수 있도록 돕는다. 선생님께선 정확하게 얼마나 인턴십 비용이 책정될지 모르며, 우리에게 "fundraising"을 추천했다. 이것이 나에게는 조금 생소한 경험이었다. 선생님의 말씀 이후에 우리는 모여서 어떻게 모금을 마련할 지 이야기를 나누었다. 몇몇의 친구들은 스웨덴의 수도(스톡홀름)에서 거리 공연을 하기로 했고, 몇몇의 친구들은 학교 주변의 과일 나무에서 나오는 과일들로 쨈을 만들어서 팔기로 했다. 적극적인 의견과 경청이 오갔다.

모든 일정이 끝나고, 저녁을 먹고, 잠을 잘 준비를 했다. 오늘 그룹 메세지 방에서 친구들 중 몇명은 벌써 포스트 카드를 쓸 생각을 가지고 있었다. 나도 누군가에게 포스트 카드를 쓰기로 마음먹었다.
