어린왕자(The little Prince)_ 01영문판

Prologue

  어린왕자는 단순한 이야기 책이라고 보다 철학책이다. 워즈워드가 Rainbow라는 시에서 'The child is father of the man'( 어린이는 어른의 아버지다)이라는 시어는 어린이 과정을 거치지 않고 어른이 되는 사람은 없다는 의미이다. 2층 없는 3층은 존재할 수 없듯이 새싹의 과정을 거치지 않고 큰 나무가 될 수는 없을 것이다. 어린왕자는 읽을 때 어릴 때, 젊을 때, 장년이 되었을 때마다 그 깊이가 다르다. 이런 면에서 한 권의 책은 한 사람의 인생에서 읽을 때의 환경과 상황에 따라서 다르게 해석되거나 인식의 범위에 대한 확장과 생각의 영토가 다름을 짐작할 수 있다. 실상 원서라 함은 불어(French)이지만, 영문도 한국어를 사용하는 사람에게는 원서이다. 영어성경과 번역 본 성경을 읽을 때 그 맛이 다르고, 주역이나 논어를 한문으로 읽을 때와 번역을 해서 읽을 때 그 맛이 다르다. 번역할 때 묘한 뉘앙스(nuance)는 음식을 직접 해서 먹는가 해준 것을 먹는가에 차이가 아닐까 한다.  어린왕자를 다시 읽으면서 삶에서 놓친 부분은 대한 깊이 있는 명상과 성찰을 통해 더 깊이 있는 인식과 철학적 사유로, 보다 가치 있고 의미 있는 삶으로 자신에게 주어진 시간과 공간을 알차게 살아가기를 바란다. 

  Once when I was six years old I saw a magnificent picture in a book, called True Stories from Nature, about the primeval forest. It was a picture of a boa-constrictor in the act of swallowing an animal. Here is a copy of the drawing.     

   In the book it said: "Boa constrictors swallow their prey whole, without chewing it. After that they are not able to move, and they sleep through the six months that they need for digestion." 

   I pondered deeply, then, over the adventures of the jungle. And after some work with a colored pencil I succeeded in making my first drawing. My Drawing Number One. It looked like this:

I showed my masterpiece to the grown-ups, and asked them whether the drawing frightened them.

But they answered: "Frighten? Why should any one be frightened by a hat?"

My drawing was not a picture of a hat. It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant. But since the grown-ups were not able to understand it, I made another drawing: I drew the inside of the boa constrictor, so that the grown-ups could see it clearly. They always need to have things explained. My Drawing Number Two looked like this:
