어느정도 시간을 요구하고 집중하고 읽어야할 내용이다.

Everyman은 1485년 경, 즉 15세기 말 이후에 쓰여진 작품으로 알려져 있다. 이 작품의 출전에 대해서는 많은 논란이 있는데, 1495년에 출판된 네덜란드의 작품이라는 설도 있고, Everyman이 오히려 네덜란드의 작품에 영향을 주었다는 주장도 있다. 또 어떤 이들은 이 두 작품이 모두 어떤 설화나 이야기를 공동의 출전으로 삼을 것으로 주장하기도 한다. 불교설화를 바탕으로 한다는 말도 있고, The Dance of Death라는 작품을 근원으로 내세우기도 하고, John Damascene의 우화를 이용한 극이라고 주장하기도 한다.

그런데, 이렇게 출전이 다양하다는 것은 뒤집어 생각해보면 이 작품이 다루고 있는 주제가 굉장히 보편적이라는 의미도 될 수 있다. Samuel Beckett이나 Geraldine Fitzgerald 등 현대의 여러 작품이 Everyman의 영향을 받았다는 데에서도 알 수 있듯이, 이 작품에서 다루고 있는 삶의 허영, 죽음의 불가피성, 미덕과 선행의 영원함이라는 주제는 인간이라면 누구나 한 번쯤은 생각해 봄직한 문제일 것이다. (p. 21 in the textbook of KONU.)

Everyman은 당시의 도덕극과는 다른 특징을 지니고 있었다. 도덕극의 일반적인 패턴인 Morality Pattern에서 조금은 벋어나고 있다. 대개의 도덕극은 한 인간의 탄생에서 죽음에 이르는 과정을 극화하는 경우가 일반적이다. 중세 도덕극의 또 다른 대표작이라고 할 수 있는 ‘인고의 성’에서는 세례수건을 아직 두르고있는 갓난애기인 맨 카인드가 오른쪽에는 Good angel 왼쪽에는 Bad angel 사이에 껴서 등장을 하고 있다. 벌거벋은 채로 기운없이 축 늘어져있는 채로 울면서 인생이라는 고해로 내던져지는 것이다.
반면에 Everyman은 죽음을 맞이한 주인공으로 시작을 하고 있다. 작품은 하늘나라에서 하느님이 지상의 인간들이 행하는 타락한 모습을 견디다 못해서 Death를 불러들여서 Everyman을 소환하라는 명령을 내리고있는 것이다. 이처럼 Everyman은 죽음을 직면한 인간의 모습을 바로 보여줌으로써 훨씬 강력하게 관객들의 마음을 잡을 수 있었을 것이다. 또 Good angel 와 Bad angel 사이에서의 갈등이 강조되는 다른 도덕극들과는 달리 Everyman에서는 그런 갈등이 거의 등장하지않고 있다. ‘인고의 성’ 에서는 신의 은총을, 인간을 구원하는 요소로 강조하고 있음에 비해서 Everyman 에서는 신의 은총이 아니라 Good Deeds, 바로 인간의 선행이 강조되고 있는데 이것은 ‘인고의 성’ 이 좀더 신앙적이고 종교적이고 Everyman은 좀더 실제의 인간생활과 결부되어있다는 것을 보여준다고 할 수 있다. 다른 도덕극과 비교해서 Everyman은 단순성, 박력, 간결함과 통일성이라는 장점을 지니고 있다고 할 수 있다. 한 가지 명심해야 할 것은 현대의 시각에서 보면 유치하고 단순해 보이는 이 작품이 사후의 삶에 관해서 관심이 컸던 당시의 관객들에게는 오히려 강력한 호소력을 지녔던 작품이었을 것이라는 점이다. 그리고 이 작품이 현대를 살아가는 우리자신도 여러번 생각하지 않을 수 없는 죽음이라는 주제를 다루었다는 점도 명심해야한다. Everyman의 등장인물들 이름의 의미

우리 교재에는 Dramatis Personae 즉 등장인물들이 나와 있다. Everyman은 우리가 알고 있듯이 만인, 모든 사람이라는 뜻이고, Fellowship 역시 친구, Knowledge는 지식이라는 뜻인데, 이러한 이름에서 알 수 있듯이 이 작품은 allegory 기법을 사용하고 있다. 선과 악을 비롯한 여러 추상적인 자질을 등장인물로 등장시켜서 이들의 모습을 통해서 작가는 Good Deeds 즉 선행만이 영원하다는 교훈을 전달하는 것이다. 그리고 이 등장 인물들은 등장하는 순서대로 제시가 되어 있다는 점도 기억하길 바란다. 가장 먼저 messenger가 등장하고 작품의 마지막에 doctor가 등장하고 있다.

어떻게 해서 하늘에, 즉 천국에 계신 고귀한 하느님이 죽음을 보내서 와서 이 세상에서의 그들의 삶을 진술하라고 죽음을 보내 인간을 소환하셨는지에 관한 이야기가 시작된다. 그리고 이 이야기는 도덕극의 형태를 취한다.

이 부분은 이 작품 전체의 내용을 요약하고 있는데, 이 작품에 대한 간단한 정의라고도 할 수 있다.

가장 먼저 등장하는 Messenger의 대사는 일종의 Prologue에 해당한다고 할 수 있는데, 극 전체의 의미를 소개하고 있다.

The summoning of everyman called it is, Everyman의 소환이라고 불린다,

핵심: 죄악은 처음에는 달콤하지만 끝에 가면 죽음에 이르러서는 영혼을 울게 만든다. 이 작품은 인간의 죄악과 하나님의 뜻에 맞는 생활을 해야 한다는 교훈적인 내용을 닫고 있다는 것이 messenger의 이야기에서 드러난다.

Seven Cardinal Virtues라는 것도 있다. justice(정의), prudence(신중함), temperance(절제), fortitude(인내), hope(희망), faith(믿음), charity(자비)의 일곱 가지 미덕을 가리킨다.

Every man leveth so after his own pleasure,

They thank me not for the pleasure that I to them meant,

Where art thou, Death, thou mighty messenger?

강력한 사자인 Death여, 그대는 어디에 있는가?

Death는 하나님의 명령을 듣고 난 후에 cruelly out-search both great and small. 즉 권세 있는 사람과 평범한 사람을 모두 잔인하게 찾아내어 천국으로 가지 못하고 지옥으로 떨어뜨리겠다고 말한다. 단순히 한사람의 인간에 대한 소환이 아니라 보편적인 인류 전체와 관련되어있다.

DEATH. Lord, I will in the world go run over all

And cruelly out-search both great and small.

권세 있는 사람과, 권세가 없는 사람 모두 잔인하게 찾아내겠습니다. [ Exit GOD ]

Everyman will I beset that liveth beastly, Everyman의 길을 가로막으리라, 짐승처럼 살고

DEATH. On thee thou must take a long journay: 그대는 긴 여행을 떠나야 하오.

Therefore thy book of count with thee thou bring, 그러니 결산서를 가져가야 하오.

For turn again thou cannot by way. 무슨 수를 써도 되돌아올수 없는 여행이니,

And look thou be sure of thy reckoning, 분명히 결산서를 가져가야 할 것이오.

Thy many bad deeds and good but few- 그대의 많은 악행과 조금밖에 되지않은 선행을-

How thou hast spent thy life and in what wise 그대가 인생을 어떻게 보냈고 어떤식으로 살았는지

Have ado that we were in that way, 우리가 여행을 떠나도록 서두르시오,

For weet thou well thou shalt make none attornay.

당신을 위해 변호할 변호사는 구할 수 없으리라는건 잘 알테니 말이오.

EVERYMAN Full unready I am such reckoning to give.

나는 그런 결산서를 바칠 준비가 전혀 되어있지 않다.

I know thee not. What messenger art thou?

그대는 누구인가? 어떤 메신저냐?

DEATH. I am Death that no man dreadeth,

나는 아무도 두렵지 않은 그런 death다.

For every man I'rest, and no man spareth;

나는 모든 사람을 잡아들이고, 아무도 살려두지 않는 그러한 death다.

For it is God's commandment, 신의 명령이므로

That all to me should be obedient. 나한테는 모두 복종해야 한다.

EVERYMAN; O Death, thou comest when, I had thee least in mind.

내가 예기치 못한 순간에 죽음이 닥쳐왔구나.

In thy power it lieth me to save:

나를 구하는 것은 당신의 힘으로 충분히 할 수 있는 일이니

Yet of my good will, I give thee, if thou will be kind,

EVERYMAN. Alas, shall I have no longer respite?

I may say Death giveth no warning. 죽음이 경고없이 찾아오는 것이 정말이군요

To think on thee it maketh my heart sick, 당신을 생각하면 내 마음이 아파옵니다.

For all unready is my book of reckoning. 내 결산서가 전혀 준비되지 않았기 때문이지요

But twelve year and I might have a biding, 그러나 12년만 연기할 수 있다면

My counting-book I would make so clear 내 결산서를 정말로 깨끗하게 만들어서

That my reckoning I should not need to fear. 인생의 결산서를 두려워할 필요가 없으련만

Wherefore, Death, I pray thee, for God's mercy. 그러니 죽음이시어, 제발

Should I not come again shortly? 다시 금방 돌아올 수 없을까요?

DEATH. No Everyman. And thou be once there, 안되 everymam이여, 일단 그곳에 가면

EVERYMAN. O gracious God in the high seat celestial,

오 천상의 높은 자리에 앉아 계신 자비로우신 신이여,

Have mercy on me in this most need!

이와 같이 가장 위급한 때 자비를 베푸소서!

Shall I have no company from this vale terrestrial ,

Of mine acquaintance that way me to lead?

이 지상의 골짜기에서 저를 그 길로 안내해 줄 나의 동료를 데려가면 안됩니까?

DEATH. Yea, if any be so hardy , 그런 대담한 사람이 있다면 그래도 좋다.

That would go with thee and bear thee company. 그대와 함께 가서 친구가 되어줄.

Hie thee that thou were gone to ,God's magnificence, 서두르라 위대하신 하느님께 가서

Thy reckoning to give before his presence. 하느님 앞에서 결산서를 제시해야 한다

What, weenest thou thy life is given thee,뭐냐, 너는 네 생명이 너에게 주어진 것이라고 생각하느냐?

And thy worldly goods also? 세속의 재물과 함께 ?

EVERYMAN. I had weened so, verily. 나는 그런 줄 알았다.

DEATH. Nay, nay, it was but lent thee. 아니다, 아니다. 그건 빌려준 것일 뿐이다.

EVERYMAN. O wretched caitiff! Whither shall I flee 오 가련한 겁쟁이여! 어디로 도망가야 하나

That I might scape this endless sorrow? 이 끝없는 슬픔에서 벗어나려면

Now, gentle Death, spare me till tomorrow, 자 상냥한 death여 내일까지만 날 살려다오.

That I may amend me with good advisement.

EVERYMAN. Alas, I may well weep with sighs deep:

What and I to Fellowship thereof spake, 친구에게 말하면 어떨까?

And showed him of this sudden chance?

그리고 이렇게 갑작스레 닥친 운명을 그에게 이야기하면 어떨까?

For in him is all mine affiance, 나는 그를 전적으로 믿기 때문에

We have in the world so many a day

Be good friends in sport and play. 놀 때 얼마나 많은 날을 좋은 친구로 보냈는가?

I see him younder, certainly. 저기 분명히 그가 보이는구나.

I trust that he will bear me company. 나는 그가 나의 동반자가 되어줄꺼라고 믿는다.

Therefore to him will I speak to ease my sorrow. 그래서 그에게 이야기해서 나의 슬픔을 달래겠다.

It is said, "In prosperity men friends may find

번창할 때에는 친구를 쉽게 찾을 수 있지만,

곤경에 처하면 완전히 냉정해진다." 라고 말을 하지 않던가

Now whither for succor shall I flee, 누구에게 도움을 청해볼까?

Sith that fellowship hath forsaken me? Fellowship이 나를 완전히 버렸으니

'To my kinsmen I will, truly, 사실, 친척에게로 가야지.

Praying them to help me in my necessity.

친척들에게 곤궁에 처했으니 도와달라고 부탁해야겠다.

I believe that they will do so,

For kind will creep where it may not go.

She promised with me to live and die! 그녀는 나와 함께 살고 죽겠다고 약속하지 않았던가!

STRENGTH. Everyman, I will thee also forsake and deny. 에브리맨,나도 또한 당신을 버리고 떠나야겠소.

Thy game liketh me not at all. 그 게임(죽음으로의 동행)이 전혀 마음에 들지않소

EVERYMAN. Why then, ye will forsake me all? 당신도 나를 버리는 겁니까?

Sweet Strength, tarry a little space. 사랑스런 Strength이여, 좀더 함께 해주시오.

이 대목은 이 작품이 중세적 교훈을 전달하려는 목적을 강하게 지녔다는 증거가 된다. 등장인물인 EVEYMAN이 관객들에게 자신을 본보기로 삼으라고 하는 것은 일반적인 극에서는 찾기 힘든 그런 면모이다. GOOD DEEDS 역시 마찬가지 이야기를 하고 있다.

▶ GOOD DEEDS 이말 역시 관객들을 향한 교훈이라고 할 수 있다.

GOOD DEEDS : Short our end, and 'minish our pain. 죽음에 이르는 과정을 짧게 해서 고통을 줄이자.

▶ 시작부분에 메신저가 들어와서 극의 취지를 설명한 것을 극의 Prologue라고 본다면

마지막 부분의 DOCTOR, 즉 신학자가 나와서 작품의 의미를 설명한다. 이 부분은 epilogue 부분을 담당

작품의 주제에 대한 설명이 더욱 강조됨

For then mercy and pith doth him forsake. 그러면 자비심도 연민도 그를 저버릴테니,

If his reckoning be not clear when he doth come,

그가 하느님 앞에 왔을 때 그때 결산서가 깨끗하지 못하다면 구원받을 수 없을 것이다.

God will say, " Ite, maledicti, in ignem eternum!"

그러면 하느님은 말씀 하실 것이다. “ 떠나라 저주스런 자여, 저 영원한 지옥의 불길 속으로”

And he that hath his account whole and sound, 그래서 계산서가 온전하고 깨끗한 자는

High in heaven he shall be crowned, 높은 하늘나라에서 보상을 받을 것이다.

Unto which place God bring us all thither, 그곳으로 하나님은 우리를 모두 오게 하셔서

That we may live body and soul togither. 육신과 함께 영혼을 살게 하실 것이다.

Actor Gary Cooper served as an idealized everyman during the golden age of Hollywood, appearing as the protagonist in films such as 1952's High Noon.[1][2]The everyman is a stock character in fiction. An ordinary and humble character,[3][4] the everyman is generally a protagonist whose benign conduct fosters the audience's wide identification with him.

The Parable of the Good Samaritan features an everyman type character who suffers but receives compassion at the hands of the titular Samaritan.[5]

The term everyman traces to an English morality play from the early 1500s: The Summoning of Everyman.[4] The play's protagonist is an allegorical figure representing an ordinary human faced with imminent death; according to literature scholar Harry Keyishian he is portrayed as "prosperous, gregarious, [and] attractive".[6] Everyman is the only human character in the play; the others are embodied ideas such as Fellowship, who "symbolizes the transience and limitations of human friendship."[6]

The use of the term everyman to refer generically to a portrayal of an ordinary or typical human being dates to the early 20th century.[7] The term everywoman[8] originates in the same period, having been used by George Bernard Shaw to describe the character Ann Whitefield in his play Man and Superman.[9]

Narrative uses

An everyman is crafted so that most audience members can readily situate themselves in his shoes. Although the everyman may face obstacles and adversities that a hero might, archetypal heroes react rapidly and vigorously by manifest traits, whereas an everyman typically avoids engagement or reacts ambivalently, until the situation, growing dire, demands effective reaction to avert disaster. Such a round, dynamic character—that is, a character showing depth and development—is then generally a protagonist.[10]

Or if lacking depth and development—thus a flat, static character—the everyman is a secondary character.[citation needed] Especially in literature, there is often a narrator, as the written medium enables extensive explication of, for example, backstory, tangents, physical details, and mental content. An everyman narrator may draw little notice, whether by other characters or sometimes even by the reader, since the narration emerges, then, from the story world. And if neutral or relatable enough, the narrating everyman may even, breaking the fourth wall directly address the audience.[citation needed]
