중요한 시간은 바로 '지금'이고, 가장 중요한 사람은 '지금 나와 함께 있는 사람'이고, 가장 중요한 일은 '나의 곁에 있는 그 사람을 위해 좋은 일을 하는 것'이다. 이것이 바로 이 세상에서 무엇이 가장 중요한지에 대한 답이며, 우리가 여기에 존재하는 이유다.
여기에 제 생각을 하나 덧붙이자면, 지금 나와 함께 있는 가장 중요한 사람은 바로 '나 자신'이 될 수도 있습니다. 그렇다면 가장 중요한 일은 '나를 위해 좋은 일을 하는 것'이 되겠지요. 이 결론의 대상을 '나'로 두어도 좋고, 또는 '나와 함께 있는 소중한 사람'으로 두어도 좋다는 생각이 듭니다. 더욱 중요한 것은 '지금'이라는 시간이니까요.
미래가 아니라 오늘, 지금을 사는 여러분과 제가 되길 바랍니다.
How did you find today's video? As I watched the beautiful watercolors and became immersed in* the story narrated by Meryl Streep, I found myself in tears by the end. It was because the final conclusion—delivered in a slightly rasping*, low voice that seemed to carry the weight of the turtle’s years—struck a deep chord in my heart.*
The most important time is 'now,' the most important person is 'the one who is with you right now,' and the most important thing to do is 'to do good for the person by your side.' This is the answer to what is most important in this world, and it is the reason for our existence.
If I may add a thought of my own here, the most important person "with you" right now could very well be "yourself." In that case, the most important thing to do would be "to do something good for yourself." I feel that we can apply this conclusion to "ourselves," or to "a precious person beside us." After all, what matters most is the time we call "now."
I hope that you and I can live not in the future, but in today—in the present moment.

Hi, welcome to Storyline Online. Brought to you by the SAG-AFTRA Foundation. I’m Meryl Streep and today we’re going to read The Three Questions, based on a story by Leo Tolstoy, written and illustrated by Jon J Muth.
There once was a boy named Nikolai who sometimes felt uncertain about the right way to act. “I want to be a good person,” he told his friends. “But I don’t always know the best way to do that.” Nikolai’s friends understood and they wanted to help him. “If only I could find the answers to my three questions,” Nikolai continued, “then I would always know what to do.” When is the best time to do things? Who is the most important one? What is the right thing to do?

Nikolai’s friends considered his first question. Then Sonya, the heron*, spoke. “To know the best time to do things, one must plan in advance,” she said. Gogol, the monkey, who had been rooting through some leaves to find something good to eat, said, “You will know when to do things if you watch and pay close attention.” Then Pushkin, the dog, who was just dozing off*, rolled over and said, “You can’t pay attention to everything yourself. You need a pack to keep watch and help you decide when to do things. For example, Gogol, a coconut is about to fall on your head!”

Nikolai thought for a moment. Then he asked his second question. “Who is the most important one?” “Those who are closest to heaven,” said Sonya, circling up into the sky. “Those who know how to heal the sick,” said Gogol, stroking his bruised noggin*. “Those who make the rules,” growled Pushkin. Nikolai thought some more. Then he asked the third question. “What is the right thing to do?” “Flying,” said Sonya. “Having fun all the time,” laughed Gogol. “Fighting,” barked Pushkin right away. Then the boy thought for a long while. He loved his friends. He knew they were all trying their best to help him answer his questions. But their answers didn’t seem quite right.
*noggin (속어로) '머리'라는 뜻. 주로 "머리 좀 써라 - Use your noggin"처럼 장난스럽거나 가볍게 말할 때 사용한다.
니콜라이는 잠시 생각한 뒤 두 번째 질문을 던졌습니다. "가장 중요한 사람은 누구일까?" 소냐는 하늘로 날아오르며 "하늘과 가장 가까운 존재들"이라고 했고, 떨어진 코코넛에 맞은 머리를 문지르던 고골은 "아픈 곳을 치료할 줄 아는 분들"이라고 했으며, 푸슈킨은 "규칙을 만드는 사람들"이라고 으르렁거렸습니다. 니콜라이는 다시 세 번째 질문을 했습니다. "무엇이 옳은 행동일까?" 친구들은 각각 "하늘을 나는 것", "항상 즐겁게 노는 것", "싸우는 것"이라고 대답했습니다. 소년은 한참을 생각했습니다. 그는 친구들을 사랑했고 그들이 최선을 다해 답해준 것도 알았지만, 그 대답들이 어쩐지 정답 같지는 않았습니다.
Then, an idea came to him. I know! he thought. I will ask Leo, the turtle. He has lived a very long time. Surely he will know the answers I am looking for. Nikolai hiked high up into the mountains where the old turtle lived all alone. When Nikolai arrived, he found Leo digging a garden. The turtle was old, and digging was hard for him. “I have three questions and I came to ask your help,” Nikolai said. “When is the best time to do things? Who is the most important one? What is the right thing to do?” Leo listened carefully, but he only smiled. Then he went on with his digging. “You must be tired,” Nikolai said at last. “Let me help you.”
그때 좋은 생각이 떠올랐습니다. '그래! 오래 산 거북이 레오라면 분명 내가 찾는 답을 알 거야.' 니콜라이는 늙은 거북이가 홀로 사는 높은 산으로 올라갔습니다. 도착해보니 레오는 힘들게 밭을 일구고 있었습니다. 니콜라이가 말했습니다. "도움을 청하러 왔어요. 언제가 일을 하기에 가장 좋은 때인가요? 가장 중요한 사람은 누구이며, 옳은 행동이란 무엇인가요?" 레오는 주의 깊게 듣고는 미소만 지을 뿐 다시 땅을 파기 시작했습니다. 마침내 니콜라이가 말했습니다. "피곤하시겠어요. 제가 도와드릴게요."
The turtle gave him his shovel and thanked him. And because it was easier for a young boy to dig than it was for an old turtle, Nikolai kept on digging until the rows were finished. But just as he finished, the wind blew wildly and rain burst from darkened clouds. As they moved toward the cottage for shelter, Nikolai suddenly heard a cry for help. Running down the path, he found a panda whose leg had been injured by a fallen tree. Carefully, Nikolai carried her into Leo’s house and made a splint for her leg with a stick of bamboo. The storm raged on, banging at the doors and windows. The panda woke up. “Where am I?” she said. “And where is my child?”
거북이는 고마워하며 삽을 건넸고, 니콜라이는 밭고랑을 다 만들 때까지 땅을 팠습니다. 일을 막 끝냈을 때 거센 바람과 함께 비가 쏟아졌습니다. 비를 피하려던 중 니콜라이는 다급한 비명 소리를 듣고 달려가, 쓰러진 나무에 다리를 다친 판다를 발견했습니다. 그는 판다를 레오의 집으로 옮겨 대나무로 부목을 대주었습니다. 폭풍우가 몰아치는 가운데 깨어난 판다가 물었습니다. "여기가 어디죠? 그리고 제 아이는 어디 있나요?"
The boy ran out of the cottage and down the path. The roar of the storm was deafening*. Pushing against the howling wind and drenching rain, he ran farther into the forest. There he found the panda’s child, cold and shivering on the ground. The little panda was wet and scared, but alive. Nikolai carried her inside and made her warm and dry. Then he laid her in her mother’s arms. Leo smiled when he saw what the boy had done. The next morning the sun was warm, birds sang, and all was well with the world. The panda’s leg was healing nicely, and she thanked Nikolai for saving her and her baby from the storm.

소년은 굉음 같은 폭풍 소리를 뚫고 숲 속으로 달려갔습니다. 그곳에서 그는 추위에 떨고 있는 새끼 판다를 발견했습니다. 다행히 살아있던 아기 판다를 안고 돌아온 니콜라이는 따뜻하게 몸을 말린 뒤 어미 품에 안겨주었습니다. 그 모습을 본 레오는 미소를 지었습니다. 다음 날 아침, 세상은 다시 평화로웠고 다리가 낫고 있는 판다는 자신과 아기를 구해준 니콜라이에게 감사를 표했습니다.
At that moment, Sonya, Gogol, and Pushkin arrived to make sure everyone was all right. Nikolai felt great peace within himself. He had wonderful friends. And he had saved the panda and her child. But he also felt disappointed. He still had not found the answers to his three questions. So he asked Leo one more time. The old turtle looked at the boy. “But your questions have been answered!” he said. “They have?” asked the boy. “Yesterday, if you had not stayed to help me dig my garden, you wouldn’t have heard the panda’s cries for help in the storm. Therefore, the most important time was the time you spent digging the garden. The most important one at that moment was me, and the most important thing to do was to help me with my garden.”
그때 친구들이 모두 무사한지 확인하러 도착했습니다. 니콜라이는 마음의 평화를 느꼈지만, 여전히 질문에 대한 답을 찾지 못해 실망스러웠습니다. 그래서 레오에게 다시 묻자, 늙은 거북이가 말했습니다. "하지만 네 질문들은 이미 답을 얻었단다!" 소년이 의아해하자 레오가 설명했습니다. "어제 네가 내 밭일을 돕지 않고 그냥 갔다면 판다의 울음소리를 듣지 못했을 거다. 그러니 가장 중요한 시간은 네가 밭을 일구던 시간이었고, 그 순간 가장 중요한 사람은 나였으며, 가장 중요한 일은 나를 돕는 것이었지."
“Later, when you found the injured panda, the most important time was the time you spent mending* her leg and saving her child. The most important ones were the panda and her baby. And the most important thing to do was to take care of them and make them safe. Remember then that there is only one important time, and that time is now. The most important one is always the one you are with. And the most important thing is to do good for the one who is standing at your side. For these, my dear boy, are the answers to what is most important in this world. This is why we are here.”
*mending 옷 등을 고치는 것, 수선하는 것
"나중에 다친 판다를 발견했을 때는, 그들을 치료하고 구하던 시간이 가장 중요한 시간이었다. 가장 중요한 이들은 판다 가족이었고, 가장 중요한 일은 그들을 안전하게 돌보는 것이었단다. 기억하렴. 중요한 시간은 오직 하나, 바로 '지금'이란다. 가장 중요한 사람은 언제나 '지금 너와 함께 있는 사람'이고, 가장 중요한 일은 '네 곁에 있는 그 사람을 위해 좋은 일을 하는 것'이란다. 이것이 바로 이 세상에서 무엇이 가장 중요한지에 대한 답이며, 우리가 여기에 존재하는 이유란다."
It's such an interesting book because it raises very big questions in a very small story, small space and it made me think about in my own life when I try to figure out difficult things, I ask advice from friends, and everybody always has different advice... but I feel like the turtle says to Nikolai, look inside yourself and to your own experience and what that’s taught you and says be aware of the lessons life is teaching you every second you go along. And so I love that. I love that little message, but it is a mystery how to answer the three questions, and I guess we answer them every day. Thank you for watching Storyline Online.
