자신이 좋아하는 음식을
아이에게 먼저 먹어보라 권하면서
어린 엄마는 아마 미처 깨닫지 못할 것이다,
어린 날 고향에서
아이의 할아버지와 할머니로부터 선물 받았던
사랑이라는 이름의 추억을 자기 아이에게
서툴게 물려주고 싶어한다는 사실을.
자기는 새 옷을 입지 않아도
아이에게는 새 옷만 입히며
자기는 가지 못한 대학을
아이는 다니게 하다 보면
봄과 겨울이 뒤바뀌며
아이는 부모가 되고,
부모는 빈 자리가 된다.
그렇게 부모는 아이들에게
못 지킨 약속이 되어간다.
이를테면 결국 함께 떠나지 못한 여행과
더는 함께 걷지 못하게 된 산책길,
더는 함께 다녀올 수 없는 동네식당처럼
다시 물려줘야 할 추억으로만 남게 된다.
Memories to Pass On

Offering her child the first bite
of her own favorite food,
the young mother perhaps hardly realizes—
That she is clumsily trying to pass on
a memory by the name of "love,"
a gift she once received from her own parents
in her hometown, long ago.
Dressing her child in new clothes
while she herself goes without,
sending her child to the college
she could never attend—
As springs and winters turn and fade,
children become parents,
and parents become empty spaces.
And so, parents eventually become
a collection of unkept promises to their children.
Like the trips they never got to take together,
the paths they can no longer walk together,
and the neighborhood diner they can no longer visit—
they remain only as memories, waiting to be passed on once more.
