“I’m fine, really. I just need to take a rest.”
Of course he couldn’t deny he had nightmares about the case almost every night, and Cynthia often heard him waking up screaming. She didn’t mention it, though.
At the entrance of the apartment, they saw John was standing there. He was also looking at them. His bottom lip was weirdly distorted.
“So, it was true that you two LIVE together.”
“Hey, John. What’s with you?”
Alexander said to him.
John didn’t answer for awhile, and still maintained the weird expression.
“What are you doing here? Yes, he is staying here for a short period because of his condition. Is there something wrong with that?”
Cynthia asked sharply.
John shook his head slowly, straightened up his face, and brightly said to Alexander.
“Will you have a drink with me tonight? I want to talk. Is it alright, Cynthi. Lend Alex to me this evening.”
Cynthia nodded rather coldly, and went into the house on crutches. John watched as Cynthia slowly moved away on her crutches. He neither asked about nor even mentioned her condition.
John and Alexander began to walk on the dark street. Few of the street lamps were shining, and sometimes cars drove past at high speed. They entered a random in the vicinity.
John turned to Alexander with a grin, and asked,
"So what do you want to drink?"
"Just order me a Yuengling on tap,”
Alexander replied heartily, and John went to fetch the drinks.
Alexander could tell that something wasn't quite right with John. He was frosty with Cynthia back at the apartment. That was apparent, and he was being far too chipper now. He wasn't a fool. He knew that the idea of Alexander staying with Cynthia rubbed John the wrong way for some reason. He wanted to get to the bottom of this, but he needed to be subtle. John returned with their drinks: a Yuengling for Alexander and a gin and tonic for himself. He felt a tingling pain in his right hand, and grabbed the glass with his left.
"So," Alexander began,
"what's new with you, John? How have you been? It's been awhile since we could sit down and have a proper chat."
“Yep. Especially after I joined the team as a detective. As you know, we are always inundated with cases.”
