The Frozen Ground flaws

雨水 [30] / [35]

Alexander knew that it wasn’t true. Actually, since John and Cynthia married, Alexander naturally felt far from John. It seemed something popped up and there was a rift between them. But Alexander didn’t bother to correct it.

“I think you want to know how the investigation into your case is going right now.”

“Did you find her?”

Alexander startled, asked him.

“We requested cooperation with the investigation from other regional police stations to help send us cases of missing young men, and collected some information from them. There are a few of cases which are very similar with yours.”

Ed's explanation left Alexander with a sense of unease.

By this explanation, Alexander felt strained despite himself.

“4 cases in total except yours. One happened in Maryland, two in Pennsylvania, and the last in Texas. All are missing cases of men aged between 20~30s. Except one case, they found the victim in a deserted house. One of the cases in Pennsylvania.”

“So the victims are 4 in total, all missing, but have any been found?”

"Just a guy, probably in his mid-20s."

“When did all these happen?”

“Actually that was a problem. We had to decide on how long of a time period we should request for cases. Surprisingly, they all happened within 3 years.”

John asked for a sheet of paper and a pen from the bartender. He drew on the table. He wrote down a series of names, numbers, and dates, and slid them over to Alexander.

"Look these over at your leisure. When you get back into the office, you can have a proper go over the files,"

said John, as he took a drink.

Alexander was intrigued. It seemed like all of these cases took place within the tri-state area, which itself suggested the same killer may be behind them.

"Actually," replied Alexander,

"Can you do me a favor? Could you have copies of the files sent to Cynthia's place? It might be awhile before I'm fully back to work. I'd like to give them a once-over."

John considered him a moment, took a long swig of his gin and tonic, draining the glass, and nodded.

"Does Cynthia still have trouble sleeping without a drink?"

John asked.

"What?"

Alexander asked, bewildered.

"What I mean is, she cannot sleep without drinking plenty of alcohol. She's been like that for almost 3 years, and as far as I know, she's still like that."

"I don't know anything about that. I didn't notice at all. She seemed normal though."
