By the time Alexander realized that this spectacle that just played out before his very eyes was no play, the food began to be served at his table. Except for the seafood, which he eyed with disdain, everything was new to him (and there was no steak).
“Eh, what are these?”
he asked the server.
“Fresh seafood, sir, including lobster, risotto with shaved white truffle, eggs Benedict with marinated salmon and Beluga Caviar. And saffron pudding will be served after your meal, sir.”
In short order, the server departed and Alexander gazed at the unfamiliar food staring back at him from the table. He grasped his spoon, and cautiously sampled some of the dishes, but he put it down after a few bites. He glanced at the bill, which the server kindly left near the serving plates at his end of the table.
The taste was not in proportion to the price. Jaqueline only made the reservations and ordered the food. She didn’t pay for anything beforehand, so it looked to Alexander like he was going to get stiffed with the bill. So, Alexander paid for a meal, prepared for two, which he barely ate, and left the restaurant.
He was pissed off at first, but changed his mind as soon as he thought about how idiotic it would be to let the thought of Jacqueline occupy space in his mind. Moreover, she never told him that she was alone or that this would be a date with him. Everything was just in his imagination, that’s all.
He decided to wander around the inside of this building while he had the chance. He figured he may as well get something out of being here, and, despite his not-so-great mood, he couldn’t deny that the place was amazing.
The interior architecture was stunning, and everywhere Alexander looked, he found something that would catch his eye. The place was infused with a special sort of opulence, and looked like a 21st century Versailles, but with the trappings of Capitalism replacing the ode to doomed royalty. High white vaulted ceilings, bordered with gilded trim, capped walls of deep crimson that extended the length of the corridor, and were lined with dozens of what seemed to Alexander to be very well-done copies of original works of art, if they were copies at all.
Alexander was by no means an art connoisseur, but, as he walked down corridor, his shoes echoing off the pristine marble floor, he saw quite a few other pieces of modern art that looked cheaply made, but, he assumed, sold for an absurdly inflated sum among the post-modern intelligentsia.
Ornate mirrors and and strategically-placed monitors advertising products and events filled in the spaces on the wall, and, along with exquisitely-carved wood and leather furniture that looked straight out of the 19th century, it gave the building a cyberpunk style that felt both old world and new age.
