In theMiddle ofRotatingSeasons

"I guess it's that she is little bit of a coward sometimes. She tends to think people might not like her as much as she likes them. I think she is afraid of beginning new relationships, and sticks her head in the sand out of fear. So even if she wants somebody, she doesn't express this outwardly. Did you ask for her number or about a next meeting?”

she questioned him. He realized now that he didn't.

"No, but I asked her if she would be busy or not. I think I was waiting for her to ask me."

Karol snorted,

"It must be more difficult to begin something when both parties are cowards, isn't it?"

Then she went into the bar again, leaving Alexander alone outside. He stood there a moment, happy but still a little dumbstruck. He searched for all this time, and, thinking that his last hopes were dashed with the bartender, the means of contacting her as good as fell into his lap. He smiled, laughed, and then paused, reflecting on what Karol just said.

Cowards? Maybe so, or maybe they had more in common than he originally thought. For Alexander, meeting Natalie was the happiest moment he'd had in a very long time. Maybe he was afraid of screwing up a good thing? That she'd reject him? Or maybe that she'd feel the same way about him as he felt about her?

Something about that felt oddly scary to Alexander because, if things did actually pan out between them, the consequent relationship would be Alexander's first since Cynthia's death. That was uncharted territory, as far as he was concerned, and part of him feared making the commitment.

But, after talking to Karol, it seems that Natalie had similar reservations, but coming from a different place. Funny enough, this made Alexander feel a stronger affection for her. He wanted to know about her life before, but he didn't know if it would be a good idea to dig around in such intimate areas of her past. He decided not to ask.

That evening, he visited a department store to buy some decent clothes. Originally he hadn't had much interest in self-care or dressing well. He used to let himself kind of just go all natural. In truth, most women thought he was quite handsome, but the way he presented himself was a little sloppy sometimes. He needed to fix that.

He always cut his hair short enough to the point where it was fairly low-maintenance, and never even used a hair dryer after showering. He didn't use lotion for his skin, and, to be quite honest, had no fashion sense at all. This wasn't because he didn't want to be groomed. It's just that, because of work, he never really had the spare time or inclination to really care about how he look towards the opposite sex. He was inexperienced in this way, and never really was in a position before where he felt anxious about impressing someone.

There was just something about her. She was smart, funny, and gorgeous. But it was far more than that. What attracted him to her was far deeper than mere appearance or surface-level attributes. She was deep. Really deep; in a way that many of the people that he'd met throughout his life, with the exception of Cynthia, just weren't. Most people, from his experience, had the depth of a puddle. Even if, from a distance, the waters seemed to stretch out far and wide, they were barely knee-high.

Natalie was an ocean, and he felt as if he were being pulled in by a strong current. She had smitten him, and he was well past the event horizon now. He couldn’t escape her pull even if he wanted to, even if he wasn't yet ready to admit it.

---

### ◾ Alexander

* “Maybe he was afraid of screwing up a good thing?”

| **반복/역설** | “Maybe they had more in common than he thought” | 표면적으로 다르지만 심리적 공통점을 통해 둘의 연결을 강조 |

| **과거 회상과 현재 감정의 대비** | "This would be Alexander’s first \[relationship] since Cynthia’s death" | 새로운 관계가 과거의 상실을 치유하고 있음을 암시 |

| **비유적 리듬** | "Most people had the depth of a puddle…
